Do you think the investigation has gotten a little more serious? He came out saying it was consensual and mutual but there were rumblings it wasn’t. I find it strange he has quit some long after this surfaced.
Maybe, but I doubt it’s the reason he’s quit. Reading some of the more reputable sites (ABC News for starters) it’s been reported that his office had been targeted by vandals and he’s received threats of sorts following what he did and he felt there was no choice to quit to keep him and his family safe (how ironic that he now cares about his family when he took off with a fellow Green).
Says a lot about the character of some supporters of the Greens (seemingly) when vandalism and threats are the default response to anyone or anything that falls afoul of them.
'Deeply distressingly, following my resignation from the Greens, there was unauthorised access to my office in Parliament House.
‘Personal items, including family and my children’s baby photos, were vandalised with offensive and threatening graffiti. We believe this involved a number of people.’
I did see this story earlier this week on ABC even though it was from a while ago. It appears that the guy allegedly response is now about to be sentenced. All it indicates is that the loopholes in the laws are allowing their defence lawyers to jump through them and get minimal sentences on the offenders. That needs to be stitched up ASAP.
Though apart from the horrible crash in Murrumba Downs recently, don’t think I’ve seen as much focus on current youth crime events as before the election, which is what TV_Cynic was alluding to, whereas it was a daily thing prior to the election.
You could probably argue there hasn’t been as much focus in the media as prior to the election, but that could be a bit circumstantial. There was also an article inside the Sunday Mail today talking about sentencing of another youth offender, so it’s still being reported on.
Happy to put my hand up and admit I’m incorrect if it turns out I’m wide of the mark- but putting two and two together this seems to be the most likely case here in my view.
I don’t see any other cohort of people that would have the motive to specifically target Mr Hibbin’s office to vandalise it in such a way, and there is a strong track record from some of the more extreme elements that are affiliated with the Greens of condoning and participating in vandalism against things they perceive as an acceptable target.
I don’t wish to paint all Greens supporters with the same brush (hence why I’ve qualified it with ‘some’), as the majority of Greens supporters are decent, caring, honest and well-meaning people, but there is undeniably an element within the party’s supporter base that does tend itself towards vandalism and other acts of intimidation against people that disagree with them.
