Stan Sport

Stan boss, Mike Sneesby, said that from next year, Stan Sport will deliver every match, from every court, at both Wimbledon and Roland Garros, live and on-demand, and ad-free.

This will be the first time that every match from French Open will be shown live into Australia. Fox Sports has been able to deliver every match from Wimbledon, live and on-demand, for the past five years or so.

WIMBLEDON AND ROLAND-GARROS

ADVANTAGE STAN - RIGHTS FOR EVERY GAME, SET AND MATCH FOR WIMBLEDON AND ROLAND-GARROS SECURED WITH NEW DEAL

Brand new partnership with Wimbledon and Roland-Garros brings broadcast rights for every match, live and on demand, ad-free, through Stan’s new sports streaming package from 2021.

Stan today announced that it will expand its sport offering in 2021, with Australia’s leading local streaming service announcing it is set to launch two of the world most prestigious tennis Grand Slam tournaments, as part of a new add-on sports package which will become available on Stan in 2021.

These new sport partnerships will see Stan become a new home for two of the world’s most respected and renowned tennis championships, Wimbledon and Roland-Garros.

In 2021 , Stan will be a one stop shop for both these tournaments, delivering every match from every court, live and on demand, and ad-free.

The combination of Stan, alongside Nine’s broader TV platforms and media assets, means Stan is better placed than any other streaming or broadcast TV businesses to bring these sports to more Australians than ever before.

The brand new partnership with Wimbledon and Roland-Garros follows on from the recently announced Rugby partnership, which also kicks off in 2021; with Super Rugby, Super W, The Rugby Championship, including the Bledisloe Cup, Wallaroos games, Shute Shield, Hospital Cup, Mitre 10 & Currie Cup, plus all SANZAAR Union home games live and on demand, ad-free on Stan.

Mike Sneesby, CEO of Stan, said: “ With this announcement, Stan will become a home of Wimbledon and Roland-Garros in Australia — two of the world’s most prestigious tennis tournaments. Expanding our live streaming offer, sports fans can look forward to full coverage of both tournaments live & on demand, ad-free on Stan from 2021.”

Mick Desmond, Commercial & Media Director, AELTC, said : "We are delighted to be announcing a return to Channel Nine’s multiple platforms as our exclusive broadcast partner for The Championships in Australia. Wimbledon has a long and proud history in Australia, and we look forward to seeing The Championships unfold across Nine’s impressive network.”

“I would also like to take the opportunity to thank Channel Seven and Foxtel for their efforts in broadcasting Wimbledon over the past decade."

Bernard Giudicelli, President of the French Tennis Federation said: “We are very happy to have signed this agreement with Nine. The multiple viewing platforms they offer will only increase the renown of Roland-Garros Down Under, where tennis fans boast a real passion for the game.”

Tennis fans will be able to see every game, set and match on their favourite device via the brand new sport package, which Stan subscribers will be able to add in 2021.

Well done Nine for regaining the rights to the French Open and the Wimbledon. Nine regain the rights to the Wimbledon for the first time since 2010 and the French Open for the first time since 2009. Following The success with the Australian Open, Nine will be the home of Tennis.
Every match, every court, live and free on 9, 9Now and Stan

Nine would be really a great place to work right now with everything going from strength to strength with their strategy around the use of Stan and moving the network into the 21st century. It is great they are getting all these exclusive sports rights and utilising all their properties to monetise all this.

Nine broadcast the Women’s French Open final in 2010. It was 2013 when Nine lost the French Open rights.

Stan Sport reminds me of when ONE HD started. Buying all these second-tier sports rights that normally would be on Fox Sports. As long as they don’t make the same mistake of simulcasting all the good stuff for free on the main channel.

I think it’s a good move to see Rugby and Tennis on Stan and Nine. Nine’s coverage of the Australian Open has been good since first broadcasting the tournament in 2019.

Nine was only showing highlights late at night (the next night) and it was only because of Stosur’s run in 2010 that they showed the semi and final. It was essentially on pay TV back then.

Roland Garros was always behind a paywall on Fox Sports before SBS picked up the FTA rights in 2018.

One would think the US Open tennis rights will be Stan’s next target. ESPN currently holds the main rights to the tournament (it is also the host broadcaster).

Though it was on Nine before Fox Sports picked it up (and before Fox Sports started).

I did read in one of the articles that the rights were still held by ESPN even though their contract was meant to of finished up this year. Guessing it might of been renewed with ESPN especially since that ESPN has the USA rights.

Only highlights. Nine showed live the Final in 2010 with Stosur

My point was, Nine showed the French Open live (at least some of it including the finals) in the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s before Foxtel was created.

2001 I think was the last year they had it, Seven had it for a couple of years after that and then it went to Fox Sports in 2004 (ABC had highlights for 2004 only)

An article said Nine were interested in that too but US Open rights are “currently unavailable, as ESPN have them Foxtel”

I’m worried that Nine will be reluctant to show much at all of particularly Wimbledon on terrestrial broadcast, whatever that do show I wonder if it’ll be live streamed / VOD at all on 9Now (as that’s the bvod service of Nine broadcast).

There’s a lot for them to work out here, the AO too, they’d better tread carefully.

All sports matches etc. broadcast on FTA will be available on 9Now. All others will be available on SS only.

The final, plus for potentially a nightly broadcast showing the ‘best’ matches. Just like they do for the AO on the main channel.

You’d think Nine would at least broadcast the finals and matches featuring Australians/top seeds?!
