FOOTY LEGENDS TO CLASH IN THE RING AT ‘THE GATHERING’

LIVE & EXCLUSIVE PAY-PER-VIEW ON STAN
WEDNESDAY 3 APRIL
ADELAIDE 36ERS ARENA

THE GATHERING

One of the year’s most highly-anticipated boxing events in Australia has been officially announced. The Gathering , featuring an incredible lineup of world-class boxers and former AFL superstars, will unfold in Adelaide on April 3 - a not to be missed Pay-Per-View, live & exclusive on Stan.

Presented by promoters Sam La Bruna and the Pelligra Group , The Gathering Pay-Per-View will be available to order and watch only on Stan.

The all-star lineup came together at a press conference yesterday afternoon in Adelaide to offer up a preview of the action to come, with veteran boxing MC Andy Raymond running proceedings.

The Gathering will feature an all-star lineup of fighters headlined by Perth’s Jackson England (15-3) taking on former WBO Junior Lightweight champion Jamel Herring (24-4) for the WBO Global Super Featherweight title .

Fans may remember England for his stunning performance in a fight of the year candidate against Australian boxing great Paul Fleming on Stan’s Turf War Pay-Per-View in 2022, while Herring is a bona fide American title contender who holds a knockout victory over Irish star Carl Frampton . Both fighters boast an impressive list of knockouts on their resume, ensuring a thrilling main event.

Adding enormous excitement is a who’s who of former AFL stars headlined by Channel 9 media personalities, Kane Cornes against his Sunday Footy Show colleague Nathan Brown, while 2011 Brownlow Medallist Dane Swan will face off against Dale “Daisy” Thomas in a battle of Collingwood teammates turned foes.

AFL legends Anthony Rocca and Corey McKernan will also step into the ring as well as ex-Brisbane Lion Mitch Robinson and Kayne Pettifer .

The Gathering will also feature some rugby league flavour with former Sydney Roosters and recent Gold Coast Titans signing Alex Leapai Jnr , who will make his long-awaited pro boxing debut. His father Alex Leapai senior famously fought Wladimir Klitschko for the World Heavyweight title in 2014 in Germany. “The Lionheart” fell short that night and now his 125kg, 193cm 18-year-old son has foregone a lucrative NRL career to “Finish the job his father started”.

Stan Director of Sport Ben Kimber said:
“We’re thrilled to be delivering another epic Pay-Per-View event on Stan. The Gathering features one of the best cards of the year combining both AFL royalty and serious boxing talent, headlined by a title fight not to be missed.”

Promoter Sam Lu Bruna said:
“This will be a fantastic event and it seems to have captured everyone’s imagination. It has a world class boxing line-up and having some of the biggest AFL names going toe to toe makes the occasion extra special. It’s adding to an already huge sporting week in Adelaide and the SLB is proud to bring it to you."

To order and watch The Gathering Pay-Per-View customers will need an active Stan subscription. Stan subscribers can order the Pay-Per-View for $50. New customers can sign up for a 30 day free trial and then order the Pay-Per-View.

How long have the 36ers held the naming rights?

Tickets to The Gathering are now available at the Ticketbooth website.

Has been called 36ers Arena since Pelligra took it over in 2021. Played 1 game there since, when New Zealand were playing home games all over the place. 36ers use it for training and the Pelligra owned Lightning (WNBL team) still play their home games there.

Former UFC superstar Tyson Pedro, one of Australia’s greatest combat athletes, today announced at a press conference that he will be making his long-awaited return to boxing at Uncaged - an unmissable Pay-Per-View live & exclusive on Stan on Wednesday, 12 June.

Looking to kickstart his professional boxing career with a bang after stepping out of the cage, Pedro will enter the ring with Australian Heavyweight Champion Kris Terzievski, the 12-1 monster perhaps most well-known for being one of only two men to hold a win over Paul Gallen, uniting the Australian and Australasian heavyweight belts in the process.

Tyson Pedro has been one of Australia’s hottest combat sports athletes in the past decade, following a successful seven-year run in the UFC light heavyweight division which included decisive victories over UFC contenders Paul Craig and Khalil Rountree Jr.

At today’s press conference at Sydney’s Liberty Hall, it was revealed that the fight night will take place at the Hordern Pavilion, the home of many great fight nights over the years, with few bigger than this.

The stars were out in support of the epic announcement, including heavyweight UFC cult hero Tai ‘Bam Bam’ Tuivasa, Penrith Panthers star Tyrone Peachey, and NRL champion and boxing superstar **Paul Gallen.

WBC President Mauricio Sulaimán joined the press conference, his excitement about a star of Pedro’s calibre clear to see.
"I am so excited about this great event and I’m looking forward to being there in June."

"Tyson Pedro - what a story. I’ve spoken to him and realised how important it is for him to take this gigantic step. It’s not normal to see someone so courageous to go into boxing after a great and successful career."

" If Tyson Pedro succeeds, he enters the world stage, and the possibility to fight for a WBC world championship."

Two other stellar contests were also announced for Uncaged today, with more to be revealed in the coming weeks.

Australian 2020 Olympian Alex Winwood will put his undefeated professional streak on the line against Filipino firecracker Joey Canoy in a WBC Strawweight World Title Eliminator, with the winner being granted a guaranteed title shot in a future bout.

Also on the card will be the undefeated prodigy Ella Boot, the current WBC Lightweight Silver Champion and National Super Lightweight Champion. Trained by the legendary Johnny Lewis, who has led six fighters to world titles including the likes of Kostya Tszyu and Jeff Fenech, the 24-year-old Boot is considered one of the country’s hottest prospects, and Lewis is adamant that she will be his seventh world champion.

Boot faces the aptly named Aussie standout ‘Miss Business’ Tywarna Campbell. The two opponents know one another well, having been former sparring partners, and word has it the two friends-turned-foes have had their share of close and brutal battles in the gym together over the years.

ABOUT TYSON PEDRO

Pedro is no stranger to the boxing ring, beginning his combat career with a 5-0 amateur boxing record before transitioning to mixed martial arts, where all 10 of his career victories came via referee stoppage. He grew up in a combat family, with his father John Pedro, a former fighter who has been credited with pioneering MMA in Australia, and who still trains with Tyson to this day.

Pedro and Terzievski will headline a stacked card and face off for the WBC International Bridgerweight Title, a division in which Terzievski is ranked fifth in the world, in a fight guaranteed to deliver must-see fireworks.

Tyson Pedro said:
“I could have fought someone easy, but I didn’t want to pull the wool over the Australian public’s eyes. I wanted to have a hard opponent, I wasn’t planning on taking any easy fights. We want to put on a show for the boxing community."
*“* It’s a lose-lose for him. If he loses to me, he loses to an MMA fighter.”

Kris Terzievzki said:
“Any fight is a challenge, especially of this magnitude, but I’m looking forward to represent boxing."
"Is he biting off more than he can chew? Definitely. Coming into my sport, I’m ranked no.5 in the world, I want to be mentioned among the top boxers in the country alongside the likes of Tim Tszyu."
"It’s a big risk for me, but with great risk there’s great rewards."

Stan Director of Sport Ben Kimber said:
“Tyson Pedro and Kris Terzievski announcing this fight is a seismic moment for Australian boxing. With Kris already established as a quality fighter on the world stage, Tyson Pedro has declared enormous intention in his very first event after leaving the UFC. Fight fans tuning in on Stan are in for an absolute belter of a night with plenty of quality boxing before this epic main event, as we’ve come to expect from dealing with Danny Green and the Green Machine team.”

Boxing legend Danny Green said:
“The enormous depth in Australian boxing will ensure the undercard is evenly matched and very entertaining for spectators, at venues or via our Pay-Per-View audience. These athletes are in their prime, are incredibly conditioned and will lay it all in the line.

I am wrapped to partner with Stan because they share my vision for Australian boxing which focuses as hard on the grass roots as it does on championship fights, which helps breed future champions and household names.”
