Good news
Interesting timing with State of Origin opening game tonight, and one month from the Queensland state budget release.
Clever timing
Can’t spend a cent on Perry Park though…
Update
The beautiful #JunctionOval now have all 4 #LightTowers erected, & ready for night football.

The question is, will it ever happen again?
Can @AFL_House & #VicGov bring #VFL back to its #StKilda heartland?
If so, expect 4-5k fans per game & a boon to local business on #FitzroySt pic.twitter.com/nlq59dGMWC
The issue is that Junction Oval is too small for Aussie Rules matches due to the redevelopment a few years ago.
Such a massive “make this about you” idea. There’ll never be another football match at the CitiPower, it’s exclusively a cricket ground now.
Happy to see this reported - I was nearly out of toilet paper. The claim that this report is independent is absolutely rubbish. The Our Place group paid this guy $35k to do this report so of course it was going to be negative and because they also stacked the same guy’s “independent” report last year which had more holes than a colander they’ve just made him rich and a bunch of already angry people even angrier. They have Sam McClure onside because every week he’s banging on about how the Devils will fail and has been for about 5 years but they seem to be getting stronger.
Yep, the stadium is going to cost more than originally planned but that happens when you have people who have protested and added all the extra delays and steps and reports into it all who have stalled things for 3 years and just made a huge mess and having the war going on sure hasn’t helped but they are using that as vindication for them being right also.
Hobart and Tasmania needs this and it’s going to be supported and going to be the best thing for the state for decades, those against have had multiple chances to back up their claims about how things could be done or be better without the stadium and haven’t produced anything. I wish that the Ground Up show on ABC wasn’t as ridiculous and far fetched as it seems but unfortunately it’s absolutely being made like a documentary with the truth for much of it.
They just have to emulate what happened in real life and it’s hilarious enough. ![]()
The project could now cost $3billion, up from $2billion.
Upgrade to Suncorp stadium revealed on 9News tonight includes
Halo screen - 360 degree video display
Current screens will be replaced by entertainment areas
Extra seats, at least 1,000.
Exterior major makeover with screens the size of 2 tennis courts
Suncorp Stadium revamp revealed: Halo screens, sky-high bars to change face of stadium
Suncorp Stadium will get an Australian-first halo sightscreen and sky-high terrace beer garden under a generational overhaul ahead of the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Upgrades at the city’s iconic Cauldron will be undertaken by the state government to improve the fan experience, increase capacity and create new entertainment zones in the most significant overhaul to the ground in more than 20 years.
Removing the two sightscreens would increase the capacity of the 52,500-seat stadium by about 1000.
On the forecourts outside each end of Suncorp Stadium, new screens as large as two tennis courts would be built to greet fans before they pass through the gates.
The redevelopment will be completed ahead of 2032, but the government hopes it can be finished within several years.
No roof and negligible rise in capacity. Sounds like a shit upgrade. Wasted opportunity yet again.
I get the feeling this isn’t the full picture at all.
The government has been adamant there will be a substantial capacity increase so this media release isn’t adding up for me. Could be just Courier Mail babble.
The Precinct Plan will be led by the Kardinia Park Stadium Trust in partnership with the Government, the City of Greater Geelong and precinct stakeholders.
It will investigate what else could be added to the sporting precinct.
How about an oval that’s the correct shape for top level AFL football?
Not quite the same, more like a crown, given it’s not suspended and is just on the roof.
Obviously decades too late, but I really don’t get why they didn’t build the new stands on the Latrobe Terrace side back 20 metres from where the current one is. Even if you didn’t do it to change the shape of the ground, it would allow them to have options for replacing the Hickey stand - which is forever wedged up against the road.
Sure the downside would be that if you didn’t fully finish the job there would be some unusable seats - but if they staged it in a different order that could have overcome it.
