Great news. Heavily rumoured though. Not a great timeslot I agree.
I liked this era of presenting/graphics (when it became part of the Late News), although the back-drop in 2010 with the giant plasma was better than this (2007-2008) and 2009.
Most would probably say ST’s golden era was prior to 2007 though, when it was always a seperate program and Tim Webster / Matt White days. Although wasn’t as neat, with many presenter changes (Bill Woods, Leigh Diffey, Ryan Phelan).
Great to see publicity about it now. I think the timeslot is great as there will be less problems about not covering a certain game due to time differances especially with Perth games. Great brand to have back. Sundays are turning into a weekday with viewership so gives Ten a credible sports news program.
Sunday Night and 60 Minutes aren’t exactly setting the world on fire this year, MasterChef best possible lead-in (albeit not its best night), so maybe Ten capitalising on that?
ST wasn’t always late night, had an early edition after Ten Weekend News (though that wasn’t always the case, when Ten still had Late News on weekends it was around then).
“It’s going to be awesome!” White tells TV WEEK. "And while it’s still going to be Sports Tonight, one of the things about this is people will instantly recognise that it is a bit different.
“We’ve still kept the same Sports Tonight qualities of telling people what’s going on, but the style has definitely changed. It’s going to be entertaining and fun and high quality.”
I think if you’re waiting until quarter past nine on a Sunday night to see if your footy team has won these days, then you’re probably not a true fan because there’s so many ways to get that information and the highlights and scores," says.
"So that was the way I looked at it… what do people want to see now and what can we deliver them?
Nice to see Sports Tonight back on TEN. However, 9:15pm might not be a suitable timeslot. I think it should air straight after Masterchef or just reduce the length of Masterchef to 90 minutes.
Clever time slot I think, people are tired and thinking about the week ahead, this will be point of difference to what all the other networks are doing.
Pres looks good, but the set looks 100% like the Sydney set with a different frame. You can see the central smaller display and the clocks above it.
Hope the set is just for promo photos and they actually spend money on a decent set.
I realise there’s a lot of nostalgia in this format but I can’t see this working.
The sports market has changed since it was last on air. Highlights are straight up on Twitter and organisations websites etc. The sports broadcasts, especially on Fox, host comprehensive post-game shows. Fox has specialised (sport) review shows that air on Sunday nights and before the slot of Sports Tonight.
I just don’t know what the point of difference is.
