My conspiracy theory is this:
When Matt White signed on as Head of sport, he asked to revive Sports Tonight as part of his negotiations, Ten agreed, reluctantly and haven’t put any money or effort towards it.

The US still has a strong affiliate structure, so timings need to be kept so local networks can switch to news or other local programming. Also, there are rules in place if networks run over time for non-live events.

Seems 10.00pm is the new norm for when Sports Tonight will be on, hopefully no more schedule shuffling for the time being, Facebook banner was just updated:

Why can’t it go back to being aired after the news rather than a separate program (isn’t that how it used to air ? )

If my memory is correct, at one stage it was on at 7:00pm, with the news still 5:00 to 6:00pm.

Fridays were always still separate between 2007 - 2011, news 11:30 and ST midnight usually, as seen with these news updates (which were blended when it was Mon-Thur Late News with Sports Tonight 10:30pm usually)

Kath Robinson usually did Friday Late News, though Tim Webster did do a lot of them, especially 2009/2010. Rob Canning always did Friday ST (always wondered if they recorded it or live, because of the time of night, plus ST updates earlier in evening weren’t live, as you’ll see in the video two comments down)

best thing about News/ST were those god damn transitions from the News to ST, they were really creative and always found a way to incorporate both packages together.
ie the globe from the news 05-08 package with the 04-07 ST package, the 2010 ST package with the 2011 refresh and the kinda ‘hybrid’ 07-10 package which worked well with the 05-08 and the 08-11 packages of the news.
