A blow for team and broadcasters

Australia’s team for the World Athletics Championships has received a big blow, with the withdrawal of defending pole vault champion and Olympic gold medallist Nina Kennedy.

Max Verstappen dominated the Italian Formula One Grand Prix, taking pole with the fastest lap in F1 history, before winning the race. Lando Norris finished second and Oscar Piastri came third.

The news to shorten the stage came after a riders’ union (CPA) official said riders may quit the tour altogether should more protests hit the embattled three-week race.

The lockout period for next year’s race will remain at seven days, following Labor’s withdrawal of a bill proposing extending the period to 21 days, due to opposition from local residents as well as from LNP and Greens.

Animal Justice Party MP Georgie Purcell said yesterday she would not support the bill in its current form. She was on ABC Radio Melbourne breakfast today explaining her decision.

Melbourne United will play two NBL matches in Bendigo in each of 2026 and 2027.

The women’s 100m final was won by American Melissa Jefferson-Wooden in a world championship record time of 10.61s, also the fourth-fastest in history.

The Paris Olympics silver medallist managed to hold on to win bronze — the first Australian to medal in the 1500m at a world championships.
