Reminds me of Super League war in 1997 which resulted in the merger of Australian Rugby League and Super League to form National Rugby League.

Wonder if there’ll be a new name for this entity that merges PGA and LIV? Maybe something like WGA - World Golf Association?

Wonder if any of the LIV gameplay will make it into the PGA Tour

Apparently team events will be for sure.

I hope it means more PGA events outside the USA. its bloody hard to watch golf when 90% of the events are on overnight

They’ll claim it already happens given they pretty much own the DP (European) Tour.

Normally at this time I’d be going on about how I went at the Comrades Marathon in South Africa, but injury got in the way during the qualifying period and as such I stayed at home. It was a record breaking day for those on the “Down” Run (Pietermaritzburg to Durban) aided by ideal conditions and a return to the finish line at Kingsmead rather than Moses Mabhida Stadium resulting in about 3km off the final distance. The Men’s race was only decided by 2 seconds with Tete Dijana (South African) defending the title he claimed last year, and breaking the previous Down Run record by 5 minutes in the process holding off Dutchman Piet Wiersma with Edward Mothibi (a past winner) coming in 3rd. Of note also was last year’s Gold Coast Marathon winner Jo Fukuda from Japan leading the race with about 30km to go before being passed and eventually finishing 20th. And Durban born Australian Wayne Spies finished 26th winning the 50-59 Age Group in 5:42 which was well under his goal of sub 6 hours. In all there were 57 men’s runners and 2 females that broke the 6 hour mark, meaning a record number of Wally Hayward Medals (presented to those who finished inside the 6 hour mark but finished outside the top 10 of either gender, they get gold medals) were presented. There was also a record for oldest finisher broken with 81 Year Old South African Maros Mosehla finishing in 9:26 beating a record set by Hayward in 1989.

South African Gerda Steyn (who’ll likely run in the Olympics next year) broke the long standing women’s down run record of Frith Van De Merwe (set in 1989) by nearly 9 minutes, beating compatriot Adele Broodwyk (a total novice to this race) with Carla Molinaro (another South African) finishing 3rd merely seconds outside of breaking 6 hours herself.

In all 14000 of the near 18000 made the finish line within the 12 hour time limit, many of them Aussies including the Federal Member for Fenner Andrew Leigh who finished in 7:23. Should the body allow the aim is to get back next year where for the first time since 2019 it will be an UP run from Durban to PMB.

Denver Nuggets are NBA champions for the first time. They defeated Miami Heat 94-89 in game 5 of NBA Finals in front of their home crowd in Denver, to win the series 4-1.

Jokic averaged 30.2 points, 13.5 rebounds, and 8.0 assists per game during the NBA Finals series.

I personally prefer the Canadian gridiron code. Faster game play with only 3 downs, the reduced play clocks and the bigger field. Plus the TV presentation has far less ads too than its NFL counterpart.

The larger field - about 20% wider, still not as wide as a rugby pitch but wide enough - has a big effect on it given it’s only one more person a side (12 rather than 11). The reduced play clocks help too, especially at the end of the game when they can’t wind off all the last 2 minutes with kneeling down. >_>

In theory there are also still some rugby things about it - how they handle offside on a kick for instance (being able to recover a punt and play on, but you have to be behind the kicker to do that, otherwise you have to stay 5 yards away) - but they are more desperation plays these days. But it is a sign of how the two gridiron codes developed independently, much like the two rugbys. (Heck they didn’t remove the word “rugby” from some of the Canadian football unions’ names until the 1950s…)

On the other hand, it joins Aussie rules in the “you get a point for missing” gag with the singles/rouges (of course, realising that you can get them with punts and not just missed field goals, but still), but that’s part of the quirkiness of it. :upside_down_face:

This is a bit of everything re sports, but this is one of those weekends where too much sport is not enough!

Looking forward to plenty of channel switching between the NRL, Ashes Test and AFL tonight and over the weekend. Have spare remote batteries in the cupboard just in case!

“rival” nah not really.

Gold Coast Marathon done for another year. Japanese men’s winner ran a course record time in a tick over 2:07, Aussie Liam Adams (who’s on the tools when not running) was second running a PB by over a minute. Kenyan won the women’s race for the 2nd time. Some other donut (don’t know who) was one of about 200 to complete both half and full marathons, but the time for the full suffered with the legs giving out after 15km on day 2 and despite getting to halfway 2 minutes quicker than he did completing the half on Saturday. Probably going to just stick with doing one race on the weekend in future.
