Sports Broadcasting History

Here’s an oddity, Fox Sports broadcasting the 2000 Malaysian GP, does any know why Nine didn’t air it?

First I do admire Darrell Eastlake and Murray Walker’s commentary however, the way Channel 9 treated motorsport was very poor. Nine delayed a lot of races and this caused a lot of anger as well as cutting the races to go to commercial break. This was a complete disaster for Nine with the scheduling. Nine deserved to lose the rights to motorsports in 2002 and should focus on other sports like AFL, NRL, Swimming, and the Cricket in 2003. With Ten landing on Formula 1, the coverage improves with Live telecasts. As well as this, TEN treats motorsport with respect - MotoGP and the V8s (until they lost rights in late 2006 but came back in 2015). Greg Rust, Daryl Beattie have worked so hard during F1 coverage, hosting in the Sydney studios. 2ndly, with the arrival of multi-channels, they shunted the races to ONE. As well as this, a new broadcasting deal announced with a Fox/TEN deal which sees 10 races shown on FTA while the rest are shown on Fox.
In SEp 2017, the overseas races (bar the Australian Formula 1) was moved exclusively to Fox Sports. Some fans were disappointed with other races gone from TEN and are left with highlights on 10Bold. I was disappointed with TEN removed the remaining scheduled races in 2017.

Ten’s telecasts were not usually live for European races until the introduction of Ten HD circa 2007.
Most European races in the early years of Ten’s coverage aired at a fairly consistent 10:30pm, on about a 45-60 minute delay.
A significant improvement still on Nine who would typically broadcast the European races at 11:30 or even later on occasion.
I do recall that occasionally the delay would be longer on Ten if Big Brother was running over time.

channel 9 did show it on a delay later that night since I taped the delay telecast

i never saw 10 replay segments (which 9 had done - i remember one occasion we went to an advert only to come back however many laps behind and seeing what we just saw). I don’t recall 10 ever giving the result of a race they are showing in the newsbreak (which 9 did) and the amount of “technical difficulties” 9 suffered during broadcast was astronomical.

Which opening AFL theme was the best in 2007-2011

  • TEN (2007-11)
  • Seven (2007) - The Real Thing
  • Seven (2008-11) - Start it

When Seven regained AFL rights for 2007-2011, it used a remix of Russell Morris classic The Real Thing in 2007. I think it had a double meaning: Aussie Rules is the real football game, and Seven’s coverage was the real thing and Nine’s coverage from 2002 to 2006 was not.
Maybe you can include it in the poll?

Ill just rather decide to use the 2007-11 broadcasting deal that Seven and TEN and Fox Sports have.

The Super League logo was deemed ‘too commercial’ and was later removed from these ABC promos.

10’s intro for the 2009 AFL Grand Final. Coverage was shown all day on Channel One from the Grand Final breakfast until the presentation of the winning team.

I’ll admit, my favourite era was a bit before then with these burnt into my memory.

Seven used a different opener in 1988, didn’t make a lasting impression.

This is why the ABC (radio and TV) refer to sports stadiums under the following names:
Optus Stadium = Perth Stadium
Spotless Stadium = Sydney Showground
Marvel Stadium = Docklands
AAMI Park = Melbourne Rectangular Stadium
GMHBA Stadium = Kardinia Park
AAMI Stadium = Football Park
Metricon Stadium = Carrara
and so on.

In 1987 Broadcom had the rights to the AFL, and split the rights to different networks in different states
Victoria - ABC (they had Broadcom graphics for some games and their own for others)
NSW - ABC (Sunday highlights late at night) and some regional commercial stations screened Broadcom’s Saturday afternoon games live. Not sure about Sydney.
Queensland - TVO (at Carrara for Brisbane Lions home games there was signage promoting “Neighbours” on TVO)
South Australia - SAS10
Western Australia - TVW7
Not sure about Tasmania.
Also matches were shown on the short-lived pub and club network “Sportsplay”, which also had a spinoff from “World of Sport” on Sunday mornings.
By the end of the 1987 season and after Christopher Skase bought Seven, the rights were bought by the Seven Network nationally.

Before the Seven Network had the rights to the National Basketball League (NBL) in 1988 coverage was on different networks in different states looking at youtube videos of pre-1988 games.
Victoria and New South Wales: SBS
Australian Capital Territory: Capital 7 (Canberra Cannons games)
Queensland: TVO
South Australia: SAS10
Western Australia: STW9 (there was channel 9 signage at the Wildcats home games)
Tasmania: ABC

For the 1987 VFL Grand Final, it was broadcast on the ABC in Sydney (but not Regional NSW), whilst it was broadcast on CTC7 in Canberra & presumably other regional commercial broadcasters across NSW.

AFL Friday Night Football opener from Seven - August 1996 with the classic Fanfare For The Common Man theme. Also an early acknowledgement of the 2000 Olympics.

Found another variant of Nine’s Friday Night Football intro from 1995 on YouTube. The one I captured a few years ago was during The Sunday Roast, while this one looks like a copy from the master video tape. (Vale Billy Thorpe!)
