Did Channel Ten have two teams for it’s NSWRL coverage? like Ian Maurice, Graeme Hughes and Rex Mossop as one team and David Fordham, Billy J Smith, David Wright and Tony Durkin being the other crew?
The first mentioned broadcast team was for Sydney and National at the time
Second Broadcast Team was a local QLD commentary team
Who did the Raiders matches then for WIN in Canberra?
I lbieve he did/does the Raiders matches for 2CC these days.
How did Ten cover the 1988 NSWRL finals as they clashed with the Seoul Olympics?
The 1988 NSWRL finals were held in late August/early September, with the Grand Final held on 11th September. The Seoul Olympics kicked off on 17th September, so therefore, there was no clash.
The timing of the NSW-RL finals in 1988 was probably influenced by Ten not wanting the big games of the season to clash with the Seoul Olympics?
Either way, if 11/9/1988 isn’t the earliest that a Grand Final has ever been held in NSW-RL/ARL/NRL history it surely has to be right up there.
The earliest Grand Final in NSWRL/ARL/NRL history was held on 27th August 2000, due to the Sydney Olympics being held from 15th September to 1st October that year.
Ahh yes, I should’ve remembered that. 2000 saw a lot of schedule changes for major sporting events in Australia to avoid clashes with the Sydney Olympics.
Indeed. It’s also the same year in which the earliest VFL/AFL Grand Final was held on 2nd September.
2000 was the second V/AFL grand final played in that date. The first was in 1916 when only four teams competed.
Here is the opening and closing of TAS TV covering a 1993 NBL game from Hobart
In 1995, did Nine cover the Reds/Dragons match at WACA, think for memory that game was shown at a later time in Sydney, 11pm or after the feature movie. But, the sunday game was Souths vs Manly at SFS. Did Nine really show both matches?
AFAIR: if the reds played on Sunday they were shown after the movie and 60 Mins
What NRL match was it, Raiders vs Dragons at Canberra Stadium a few years back with a commentary team of Andrew Voss, Mark Geyer and Ben Ikin. Vossy was violently ill midway through the second half and left Ikin as the main commentator. It was brutal, to say the least.
Chapter 41, Stuff You May Have Missed.
It was in 2007, Canberra versus Penrith on a Friday night in Canberra.
Of the 4 new teams in 1995 (Warriors, Crushers, Cowboys, Reds) the Warriors got substantially more network coverage in Australia than the others playing 4 times on Friday Night plus a Sunday Afternoon game at Cronulla. Excluding ABC Saturday Afternoon games (the final year that took place), I don’t believe the Crushers had a Ch 9 game shown beyond Queensland, the Cowboys had their first game on 9 nationally then didn’t appear in a Ch 9 game outside of regional coverage (incorporating a game vs Adelaide in 1998 shown in the city of the Rams) until about 2004 and the Reds appeared nationally again in a Friday night game before an Origin losing to Wests Magpies at Campbelltown (they had a Saturday night game shown in Qld and WA against the Gold Coast Seagulls later).
From memory they all appeared once on the ABC. The Crushers in their first game hosting Canberra, the Warriors played Illawarra away, and both the Reds and Cowboys played Cronulla.
Yeah it was only 3 matches that Channel 9 televised from New Zealand. All at Eden Park in Auckland.
NZ v Australia, NZ vs South Africa and the Semi Final
They took the vision and on screen graphics from TV 1 and did their own commentary. I also suspect that during those matches Sir Richard Hadlee might’ve been double dipping. He was the only Kiwi who was in the Channel 9 box during those matches.
A number of the matches weren’t televised ie the matches in regional areas. There is news bulletin footage of them out there but not a proper telecast.
The match played at Ballarat I have heard a story suggesting that it was done by VIC TV purely to be televised back to the UK. I think a couple of other matches were the case as well. Telecasts done but not shown locally.
From when NBN still televised all Knights games, even if they had to film it themselves
Speaking of cricket World Cup. Recently listened to a podcast Re: The decade after World Series Cricket and apparently TCN 9 Sydney and GTV 9 Melbourne ended the telecast of the 1987 final half way through to show a movie.
Apparently other Channel 9s around the country got the whole matches.
I have no idea about regional stations. I was only 7 back then so I have no memory of it.
In Sydney, SBS had the rights to live telecasts of Saturday afternoon matches except the grand final which was televised exclusively on ABC. Interestingly, ABC and SBS both televised finals matches on Saturdays with the preliminary final televised live on both stations according to the Sydney Morning Herald weekend guide.
In Tasmania, both the Tas TV stations in Hobart and Launceston televised Friday night and Sunday afternoon matches and Sunday afternoon finals during the season, plus all three grand finals played during the day according to the TV guides here in Tasmania. ABC televised highlights of Saturday matches on Saturday evenings and Sunday mornings on “Today’s Football” and “The Winners” respectively.
October 25, 1986: Seven showed the Cox Plate race which will later be known as the Race of the Century.
