Sports Broadcasting History

I know in the past, after the NRL Grand Final has wrapped, GTV would drop out of the coverage almost immediately after the final siren, meaning viewers would miss the post-match presentation, the lap of honour and the match review among other things. Not sure if this also occurred for Origin coverage though I do know it was sometimes delayed until after 10:30pm in the early noughties (or earlier than that, even).

Notably, this caused massive outrage in 2009 after the Storm won the premiership (which, 200 days later, was stripped from them along with many other team achievements due to salary cap breaches); they went straight to the news instead of showing the post-match formalities.

Not sure when things changed to include the post-match segment but I know for sure it was no later than 2019 because I watched that year’s decider while on holidays in Melbourne.

IIRC, the lead story that night wasn’t even the Storm’s win, but something involving an AFL player (Brendan Fevola)

That something would result in him being traded away from Carlton due to his misbehaviour at the 2009 Brownlow Medal.

I remember around this time Carlton fans and members stormed the club’s HQ protesting not to trade him away, but the club did so.

An article on ESPN website about its coverage of VFL in America in the 1980s, which even led to the introduction of the 50m line in VFL matches in 1986.

During COVID, Didn’t Seven And Nine Air “Vintage” AFL And NRL Games Respectively But With New Commentary?

No, Fox Footy and Fox League called old AFL and NRL matches respectively when their seasons were shut down during the initial 2020 lockdowns.

What About Seven And Nine?

To my knowledge, Seven aired classic AFL matches with the original commentary on Saturday nights in Melbourne, while Nine had two versions of “The Greatest”: one airing on Friday nights (later Sunday afternoons) looking back at classic NRL moments, and another looking back at classic Australian Open tennis matches, using world feed commentary (remember, 2019 was the first year of Nine’s current Tennis Australia deal, and nearly all matches they reflected on were prior to that).

Yes that happeded during an origin as well. A fews years ago i was visiting some family down in Tasmania and we watched the Origin 3 and basically as soon as the match was over they went to the AFL Footy Show. I was filthy i didn’t get to see the Blues do a lap of honour.

With the MLB starting this week in Tokyo I’m reminded of when Hawthorn and Carlton played in Yokohama.

The Japanese love rugby so I presume that’s why this was a little 15-a-side romp.

Was it broadcast here in Australia?

When was this? This is the first I’ve heard of this. lol.

Only exhibitions at this point. The next year Hawthorn and Essendon went over for another.

Melbourne also played Sydney in Vancouver in 1987, which was covered by 10 with Eddie McGuire and Bruce McAvaney calling and Steven Quartermain hosting from the studio.

Seems more interesting for seemingly being a unique production just to air on Prime, perhaps even just in the Canberra region due to it being a Brumbies game?

Seems odd they’d have multiple presenters for just something being made for Prime Canberra though - did Seven produce the world feed, but this part was just for local viewers?

That Prime Sport logo is great.

They switch to a dirty Fox Sports feed when the match starts.

Seven produced the Super 12 games then for Fox- it wasn’t until 2001 that Fox began doing its own coverage and commentary.

Fox asked 7 to do the feed for S12 as they didn’t have anyone on staff to do it. Greg Clark did a couple of Fox games in 98.

So when did Fox sports first have full Super 12 rights?
