How long did NBN do their own telecasts for, and did they also do them for Knights hames that Nine were showing?
They were still doing it up until about 1997. As for Knights games Channel 9 showed. No they just showed the 9 broadcast. At one point they would even take Foxtel feeds. That stopped in about 2003
And in 2003, NBN stopped those broadcasts mid season, no warning, no announcement or anything… seemed odd… maybe FOX pulled the feeds off them?
They covered the occasional Gold Coast Seagulls/Chargers game too… The late Leigh Maughan commentated on those games as he was living up that way at the time… Those games were only usually shown in the Gold Coast / Northern Rivers markets.
I also recall in 1997 there was some controversy about the Mariners games when Super League started… NBN were originally planning to cover those only because they felt like they had to because they were covering Knights game, but shelved such plans because they thought it reflected the community attitude towards the Mariners.
I have no memory of that. Perhaps NBN were one of the organisations who recieved threats from that Aussies for the ARL body. I’ve heard the ringleader of that organisation is up in Coffs Harbour these days
I just assumed it was an excuse of sorts to save money on the costs of covering Mariners games?
And I don’t think NBN would cave in to such threats.
It’s possible but that whole thing got rather ugly.
The whole Super League thing got ugly! My least favourite period of the code by a long way since I started following it back in the early 80s.
heres an interesting one:
the Sydney 2000 Opening ceremony pre show, complete with adverts. 30 mins long, with things like the arrivals of people like Muhammad Ali, Chelsea Clinton and interviews with some of the performers including Vanessa Amorosi & John Farnham
Did anyone recall seeing Ken Callander on the early days of the current 7horseracing coverage (Around the time Nine’s original coverage ended). I’ve only ever seen him on Nine during the 1980s and 90s alongside Simon O’Donnell.
I know Peter Donegan has featured on most of Seven’s racing coverage since 2002 following 13 years as co-host of 10’s Melbourne Cup carnival coverage alongside Tim Webster.
One more week to go before Australia’s biggest Horse race and with Nine saddling up for the first time ever, I wonder what the reception was like in 2002 when Seven first showed the Cup.
The NRL.com have a good achieve of games. I think I am late to the party. So as a loyal Parra Fan in my spare time watch the matches and highlights from round 1 in 1988 to feel like I am in 1988, I should put some on 88 KIX ion in background too. Relive my childhood memory. I am hoping Parramatta does a lot better in 1988 if I rewatch the games we did have some great players still leftover from the early 80s.
I love the old coverage of Ten and the ABC. And I think Nine did the Queensland games? So up to round 1. Those Broncos look good. They have to win the comp right?
Edit: Who is this channel? Was this nine? Not so familiar with Brisbane. This is from 1988 Round 2. Interesting choice of words “Super League” little did they know.
Seems to have been the name of TV0’s rugby league coverage in at least 1988. There are some promos on Youtube and an intro on internet archive.
All 3 commercial networks doing the Cup. Taken 46 years for this milestone to happen
ignoring the fact that all 3 commercial networks (and ABC) covered the Melbourne Cup prior to the 0-10 Network gaining exclusive rights in 1978.
Like you’ve said that Seven has been broadcasting Racing most of the time since the 1950s, but after 1978, didn’t Seven continue with other race meetings around Victoria well into the late 1980s before broadcasting the 1999 Magic Millions Carnival then followed by gaining exclusive-Melbourne Cup Carnival Rights in 2002 which spanned a further 17 years?
As per yourself, Most of the 1990s until 2002, Nine and 10 were Australia’s Main racing broadcasters. What I meant was - What was the vibe like in 2002 when Seven became exclusive broadcasters of the Cup? (Outside of what happened with Damien Oliver’s brother the week before)?
Channel 10
Oh they didn’t share the same branding in those days. Nice unique branding in different cities.
Ah thanks I didn’t know that - so what is now 10 was channel 0 in Brisbane?
