Yep - 10 started out as the 0-10 Network, then pretty much became 10 nationally after Melbourne switched from 0 to 10 (although the other stations had simply been branding as 10 for sometime IIRC). Brisbane was the odd one out for many years, partially because it had different owners and that the Toowomba station DDQ-10 was on 10. The owners of DDQ ended up purchasing the station, then DDQ become DDQ0, and TVQ became TVQ10.
Hopefully I’ve got it right, though I’m sure if I’m wrong @TelevisionAU will correct me.
I believe in Victoria Channel 7 had the rights to meetings not run by the VRC (Victorian Racing Club, operates Flemington) until mid 1988. Channel 9 had the Sydney rights locked up (Packer of course was heavily invested) and started telecasting Melbourne races in 1989/1990. As a guess that covered about a Saturday meeting per month, plus New Year’s Day, Labor Day Monday (usually Australian Cup Day), Melbourne Cup Day and Oaks Day. It didn’t prevent 7/10 showing Sydney racing but they had to take Ian Craig’s radio descriptions instead of John Tapp (at least based upon what I’ve seen via YouTube, was a little too young to remember).
Still watching the 1988 matches. Bring back the try music and I notice that David Morrow still mentioned the sponsorship name (not like an ad) it feels more natural.
I Picked up the 3AW call of the 1990 AFL Grand Final on cassette does anyone know if this was commercially available or did you have to order and pay 3AW for a copy?
During most of the 1990s 10 broadcasted the Perth Cup Race, was it shown Nationally or just within Western Australia? I know Nine televised it during 1999 and 2000 and Seven during 2007. Asking because 10 had TV Rights for the 2021-22 Perth Summer Racing Carnival and that gave me Nostalgic 90s vibes.
In 1960, with no direct connection to the southern states, Brisbane viewers had an eight-hour wait before they could see the Melbourne Cup on TV, with ABQ2 the first to air at 10.28pm with a kinescope recording.
Sydney viewers saw the Melbourne Cup live to air for the first time, made possible via the microwave link to Melbourne with a joint telecast on all three Sydney channels.
The direct telecast, about half-an-hour, included the race, the presentation of the Cup and interviews with the winning jockey, trainer and owner.
ABC’s Michael Charlton hosted the coverage and the commentary of the race was given by ABC’s Joe Brown – whose commentary was also broadcast through ABC radio nationally and overseas through Radio Australia – with TCN9’s Ken Howard presenting the post-race interviews. The telecast was directed and produced by Ron Davis of Melbourne’s GTV9.
Ladies and Gentlemen, courtesy of Paul Lang’s Youtube Channel, this is the moment that you have all been waiting for, Seven’s official Melbourne Cup Debut which lead to a sensational 17 year journey for the network.
Newcastle Knights vs Adelaide Rams 1998. Rams last ever match. But interestingly on the Optus Vision overage that day on the sideline was NBN’s Mike Rabbitt
Didn’t remember Dr Harry and Shelley Craft being involved in the telecast! Johanna Griggs and Andrew Daddo from Sydney 2000 also there. And yeah Richard Freedman was there until the end in 2018.
Been looking for it for ages and finally landed it.
An episode of Ch7’s short lived 2002 show SPORTSWATCH, which they launched after losing the footy rights.
