Yep I have the full broadcast too. Great day
Recorded off VIC TV Ballarat by the look of things… love the local ads.
Was your family out on holiday somewhere in Western Vic that weekend Rhett? Or did you obtain the tape from someone else?
Which station was it recorded off? Because if was one of the more obscure ones (such as a regional station) you should look at uploading it in some form
No such luck mate it’s off 7 Melbourne
There’s a recording on Youtube of the full 1994 Geelong v NM prelim (the greatest game of all time some say) that appears to be from Southern Cross Tasmania, it’s well worth a watch for the now dated and at times very local Tassie ads in addition to Gary’s mark and goal after the siren.
snap i literally just finished watching that classic game and i say that as a North fan
In the video of the 1990 AFL Reserves Grand Final, Peter Landy plugged Seven’s coverage of the NBL. Could you imagine had Seven retained the rights to the NBL after 1992 (when it moved to Ten, they didn’t have much luck with live Saturday games so they moved them to a later timeslot which they kept for the rest of their tenure), would Seven still have success with the NBL?
and here’s the full 1990 AFL Grand Final between Collingwood and Essendon recorded off Channel Seven Adelaide, thanks to Flemishdog’s archive:
Some more classic VFL/AFL, Hawthorn v Melbourne in 1987. This was recorded off SAS10 Adelaide (a few months before they became Channel 7 Adelaide), this feed was Broadcom’s with their commentators (Bob Skilton, Peter McKenna, Ken Hose and Barry Breen) instead of the ABC commentators (Tim Lane, Kevin KB Bartlett and Doug Heywood) we got in Victoria. Also a few minutes of WWE wrestling after the game. Thanks to Flemishdog’s archive:
this is actually the rare international version of Wrestling Challenge - even now, its very hard to find. The domestic version was much easier to find.
this was Episode 8
- Hillbilly Jim vs Iron Mike Sharpe
- Jim Powers vs Shadow #2 (Boston, 11/7/87)
- Hulk Hogan vs Bob Orton (WWF World Championship) (Superstars of Wrestling)
At that time (1987) ATV10 Melbourne had what is now WWE Wrestling Challenge in a late Thursday night timeslot. In the early years of Ten’s coverage of WWE it was on Thursday nights in primetime (9.30pm). Perhaps SAS10 didn’t think WWE would be a huge rater in Adelaide, it was “filler” between the VFL/AFL and the news.
Geoff Armstrong’s recently released “Spirit of the Red V” volume 2 has some great rugby league TV rights history. My notes from the book:
1960s live coverage second half of one game per week.
1966 live GF coverage if sold out. ABC one hour highlights of Saturday game from 6pm.
1970 Channel 9 second half of Sunday game live with replay on the ABC. GF live on both Channel 9 and ABC.
1971 no live games on tv, no replays. GF not live in Sydney, replayed at 10pm at night.
1972 ABC one hour highlights of Saturday game at 6pm and GF live.
1973 and 1974 ABC one hour highlights of Saturday game at 6pm, live coverage of second half of Sunday game, GF live.
1974 Amco cup on Channel 10 (after Number 96). GF live on all four stations.
1975 Channel 7 one hour highlights of Sunday game ‘Big League with Rex Mossop’.
1977 GF replay not shown live in Sydney as not sold out.
1978 Channel 7 midnight coverage of Ashes tests in UK.
1982 Channel 10 late night replay of Saturday game already shown on ABC.
1983 Channel 10 gains rights to Sunday game from Channel 7, Channel 9 gains rights to Saturday game from ABC. Channels 9 and 10 show finals and GF. Channel 9 proposal to show Monday night game rejected.
1985 Monday night game on Channel 10 second half of season. State of origin and Saturday game live.
1988 Friday night game replaces Monday night game.
1989 Channel 10 paid $50m over 3 years for TV rights.
1991 Channel 9 gains TV rights for less than half of Channel 10’s fee when 10 goes into receivership.
1992 Friday night, Saturday afternoon, Sunday night and occasional Saturday night game on tv. 1992 financials - total NSWRL revenue doubled from 1988 to $21.6m, player wages increased by 67% to $25m, NSWRL paid clubs $8.05m.
1993 Channel 9’s rights renewed in October for $70m total until 2000. Included a $2m option for pay TV rights.
1995 - ARL salary cap set at $1.8m. Super league proposed $3m.
1997 - TV ratings down 23% on 1996, Channel 9 revenue down $20m due to increased costs of covering two competitions, reduced advertising revenue and decline in ratings. the Friday night game which once topped the ratings was now being beaten by British crime drama. The 11 ARL clubs demanded an extra $1.5m each for 1998 ($16.5m total), to match News Ltd’s $3.5m grants to super league clubs. Optus was contributing most of the ARL clubs’ transition funding, as part of their commitment to support the ARL until 2000.
1998 - Channel 9 retained the free to air rights for 3 years, while Foxtel and Optus shared pay TV rights for the same period.
2015 - Channel 9’s Sunday afternoon game switched from 3pm to 4pm kick off. 2018 to 2022 rights worth $1.8-$2bn.
2016 - every game televised live on free to air, pay tv or both.
2021 - upgraded tv rights worth over $2bn for 2023 to 2027.
That was the year the Friday night game aired at 9:30pm. No wonder it didn’t rate.
Good point
The entire Talking Footy episode in 2001 where Kevin Sheedy and Robert Walls had their famous confrontation is now up on my youtbue
At 1983 Grand Final, singer Glenn Shorrock starts a chant for Americas Cup , before singing Waltzing Maltilda.
Relay stations taking the 1983 VFL Grand Final broadcast (this is different to my earlier 1984 post)
Interesting, I never knew AMV-4 Albury had a relay station in Ireland
I always wondered… when all four channels had the GF on it (1974) - who produced the broadcast?
I suspect the ABC would have used their cameras and production for their coverage. Not sure if the commercial stations collaborated.
