I’m going from memory here, but it looks like those Carey segments were filmed at the first incarnation of the Australia Football Hall of Fame at QV in the city.
I can’t imagine it was “Just AFL” for too long, either - it was one of the things caught up in the first phase of rebranding of everything League-produced (such as the Record and the international-targeted Wrap show*) to “AFL”, it was “Just Footy” when it started.
And before that (mid-90s-ish) there was “Interfooty”, with primitive 3D animation between segments and all that. Dunno what time of day that ran in the southern states, but it was pretty much stuck at 6.30 on a Saturday morning up north; Just Footy/AFL got more of a mid-morning slot.
(* footnote: it seems rather quaint, the days earlier in the 90s when footy was promoted internationally [and sponsored] as “Fosters’ Aussie Rules” in the Footy Wrap show, heh. Little wonder they started wanting a stronger brand. Seven were shoving that late on a… Tuesday night? up here… since Talking Footy was late on the Monday.)
Yep, Nine had the Comm Games that were in Kuala Lumpur later that year. Also have a bit of a soft spot for the versions of the graphics Nine were using for the cricket then, classy without going too over-the-top. Of course, no T20 back then so it was easy to not have to try too hard with that.
In 2001 Ten added graphics to each side to presumably compensate for the camera footage not completely filling the screen (which stayed on until Seven took over the coverage):
I’m surprised Fox Footy doesn’t have a kids’ footy show nowadays, it would be a welcome addition to their schedule. Although Fox has axed a lot of it’s “magazine” shows over the years relating to BBL, A-League etc.
Watching the AB documentary on Fox, they showed some footage from the 1995 tour of the West Indies that was broadcast by PSN (now Fox Sports) reminded me that it was probably the first big skirmish between FTA and Pay TV over sports rights
If I recall correctly, Ten ended up picking up the FTA rights
i have the original telecast of the main game that day with all but one set of ads included as an AFL historian and Darren Millane fan that’s my biggest grail
