This series was shown on full on Pay TV, not on the usual Fox Sports, but on FOX 8 when it was available only on Foxtel. This was done so that Galaxy and Austar would not air it, as Foxtel bought it for themselves. Seven was involved only to fulfill government anti-siphoning legislation.
Same with Super League the same year, but the matches were on Fox Sports Two (in which Galaxy did not carry) on Foxtel and Austar, both pay TV platforms bought the rights to it.

Yes there were Saturday Night League games on Fox8 for a while. This was when Fox8 was pretending to be a free to air network and would also air sky news updates.

Yes PSN (now Fox Sports) had the rights to that tour of the Windies in 95, with Ten simulcasting it to comply with anti-siphoning. David Hookes was PSN/Fox Sports’ main commentator on all its cricket coverage. If he was still alive today he would have been the face of Fox Cricket in the same way Richie Benaud was of Nine Cricket.

Going a bit off-topic for a moment but it surprises me Foxtel doesn’t use Fox8 to show selected matches/events from Fox Sports as a ‘teaser’ to tempt subscribers to get the sports package. It’s something Sky in the UK does occasionally with Sky Showcase (formerly known until recently as Sky 1) to great effect considering its high location on the EPG.
Would not surprise me if they started doing something like this in the next few years unless the NRL/AFL rights won’t allow it.
Probably suited the FTA stations too, as it wouldn’t have interrupted prime time, and that was a lot more important than sport at that point.
If tests in South Africa were starting at 11am local time, that would have been 8pm Eastern here… so being able to potentially put the first session on pay (if they bothered - presumably would’ve been Sports Australia, given Seven were involved, but I could stand corrected) and then have a 10.40pm start on Seven in time for the second session.
The Ashes when in England were often the same setup in many cases, with the first session not shown, because the time-zone differences were the same 9 hours to Aus Eastern time, as it would be to South Africa in summer.
Have to also remember that the late 90s was still in the period of local tests and ODIs not being shown live in full against the gate either, so only getting two sessions on FTA (and none on pay, if it existed) for an away test wouldn’t have been all that unusual. Times have certainly changed.

I think they showed a number of Cronulla games as they were the sleeve sponsor for a season (either 1998 or 1999). They may well have been a 3rd game or something like that on Saturday Nights to ensure all games got covered (joint coverage between Sports Australia and Foxtel I believe between 1998-2000 before Fox got exclusivity from 2001, 1999 I also think was the first year every game got covered as even some games in 1998 were not covered, even by local TV stations).

My memory is a bit hazy but I recall back then it was broadcast during half time of the AFL Easter Monday game (which was always a Channel Ten game between 2002-2011), so I would say that it would have been Channel Ten throughout that time period.
