Sports Broadcasting History

Up until Pre-Aggregation. BTV 6 with HSV7 jointly did the Coverage(Peter Donegan was host. As BTV6 was fafiated with Channel 9 with VIC TV which turned into WIN, I think off memory. VIC TV did it up to 1993 (Maybe 1994 Stawell Gift) Gift.

Abc did the coverage for the Mid 90’s (I remember watching Cathy Freeman winning the 400m Final Back to Back in 1995 and 1996 and and gave the other runners 60m head start. I think Steve Robilliard was commentator

After that, I have a feeling 10 took over with Peter Donegan as host, Late 90’s

I think then 7 took over about 6 or 7 years ago.

I am going on memory and I might be wrong with date.

Now seven have even dumped Donegan unfortunately in favour of the much downgraded version in Richardson

Hasn’t Dave Culbert called the last few with Richardson (a former winner) hosting? It’s a shame we don’t see or hear an much from PD anymore across many sports.

In light if yesterday (today?)'s 2:33am end to Adrian Mannarino and Aslan Karatsev’s 3rd round match at the Australian Open (which somehow only went 4 sets!), I was wondering what happened for Lleyton Hewitt and Marcos Baghdatis’ five-set match in 2008 which finished at 4.34am. What did Seven do? Did they broadcast the whole thing, or did they (or some affiliates) break away?

Why would they break away from an Australian in action?

I don’t know, I was asking the question, given it was 4am, there might have been infomercials or something.

I’m 99 percent sure they showed the whole thing from my recollections of the old MediaSpy. But someone like our doyen of summertime tennis @Sully will know more.

They did a very quick on court interview and then a very quick sign off by who ever was hosting back then.

Remember them replaying a lot of the match the next day

I watched it live at the time. Seven showed all of it.

Generally in these situations, infomercials are low priority. Even if it went past 6am I think they would have delayed the start of Sunrise ( i think it was a Saturday night/sunday morning anyway)

When you have over a million watching, you know what is going to be prioritised.

Bill Woods interviewing John Landy and Roger Bannister on Ten’s 1994 Commonwealth Games set.

Looks like it’s from this youtube channel.

Think it was just someone trying out a few things graphics-wise.

10’s coverage of LA 1984

Another time consuming “project” I’ve done a little while ago was trying to piece together the matches covered by Television in the NSWRL competition between 1986-1991 (when 10 had to sell the rights after going bust). Not all games were covered like they are today, and there were even times where only 2 club competition games were shown each round in the days of the midweek cup, hence the midweek cup games which correspond to each round are included although I’m not certain when or even if games played earlier than the NSWRL season proper were televised.

1986
ROUND 1
WED (10, Midweek Cup, Commentators Ray Warren/Bill Anderson/Graeme Hughes): Balmain vs Cronulla
SAT (ABC, Commentators Jim Maxwell/Mike Stephenson): Manly vs Canberra
SUN (10, Rabs/Anderson/Hughes): Balmain vs Canterbury

Good job mate. Seems mostly correct to me. The only thing I can see that I can correct is the Monday Night Football venues.

Rd 22-23 were at Parramatta.
Rd 24 was at Leichardt
Rd 25 at Belmore

A bit of reminiscing regarding AFL TV commentary: (old article but still applies)

I did enjoy 10s AFL coverage and it was probably the last time AFL coverage was good as well except when they would air FOXTEL coverage into WA never enjoy it when the networks just air the FOXTEL feed. As much as that article rips the current state of 7s coverage and it does seem pretty bad from what I see of it I didn’t mind the 7 coverage when they regained the rights back in 2007, At least back then you have Dennis and Bruce heavily involved back then.

Ten’s commentary crew also contrasted so heavily with the overly blokely mob at Ch 9 during their first rights package.
