Southern Cross Austereo (Regional)

Though if the regionals continue to take the Brisbane/Adelaide log there won’t be much of a different appeal

They can get access to the Newcastle/GC log

Since the regionals no long play “pop” type music it will sound very similar to Melbourne which is a shame. Until recently I use to enjoy listening to regional M’s for the variety factor. Melb is very safe, repetitive and stale in my opinion.

Article from the Gold Coast Bulletin here. It says Anstey and Hannant will continue - but no word on replacements yet.

Personally I found the “Feel Good” format that the regional s had was very safe, repetitive and stale. It sounded to similar to their sister station Hit.

As for the Dubbo market, Hit and Zoo sounds very similar in their music format. At lease now Triple M will have a good point of difference to Zoo FM.

I always found it amusing when they had a promo for Hit FM rocks football (just after Resonate sold 3GG). The cross promotion of FOX DAB offerings on the Hit FM/Gippsland website also made limited sense. So overall smart move. Will be interesting to see 3GG’s response.

Perhaps getting AFL and NRL coverage into those markets is part of the reason.

Whilst Hit has taken those in the past in those markets, that certainly is a much better fit for the Triple M brand and their target audience.

Hit Gippsland at least has taken Triple M footy even as a Hit formatted station, at least based on previous posts here.

Yes, I was travelling through Gippsland during Easter last year, definately heard Triple M football on Hit in Warragul

Don’t forget they broadcast to the Valley, where most of the money can be made. Melbourne commercials have a stronghold over the dial finishing about Inverloch in the South and Warragul/Moe in the north

It can only happen if SCA buys at least one of the Ballarat stations from Grant Broadcasters (who currently own 3BA & Power FM), or if a new commercial licence were to be issued there.

No. The existing SCA owned station is switching from Hit to MMM - no new stations are starting, nothing’s happening in Ballarat.

You should be able to get Triple M on 93.5 in most of Ballarat anyway.

I’m sure SCA would LOVE to take over 3BA and Power FM… it’s the largest regional market in VIC (not counting Geelong of course).

And the third commercial station 1314 3BT is just a relay of RSN (3UZ), so much better than the other larger VIC regional markets.

Likewise i98FM in Wollongong, which SCA attempted to acquire from WIN back in early 2017 as part of an asset swap, which saw WIN acquire NRN from SCA. While that attempt failed (the first bit, that is), I’m sure SCA still want to take over i98FM down the track when the opportunity arises.

Given what’s been happening with Bundaberg in February 2018, as well as what’s happening with Dubbo & Gippsland next week, I could envisage SCA aligning i98FM with the Triple M network, which its “Rock’s Greatest Hits” format would provide a good musical point-of-difference with Grant-owned Wave FM. In fact, that’s already happening in Bundaberg, where Grant-owned Hitz 93.9 carries the same log as Wave FM.

Interestingly, 93.5 Dubbo had just turned 20, in which it commenced broadcasting on 10th July 2000 as Star FM. The station’s rebrand from Hit to Triple M, as well as a change of music format that comes with it, will occur not long after its 20th birthday. How’s that for timing?

Once Hit Gippsland changes over, what will the locals have for commercial pop?

Streaming radio stations, Spotify, MP3 players, CDs, people singing off key…there are options.
