Songs lost to radio

ABC North Tas used that song for the loop message on 711 AM when they converted to FM:

What’s it gonna be - Rockmelons RIM FM 100.1

With John Kenny on lead vocals, from the 1988 top ten album Tales of the city
ā€˜What’s it gonna be’ is a smooth, soulful track that blends elements of RnB and pop. The song features catchy melodies, heartfelt lyrics, and a groovy rhythm that makes it easy to for RIM devotees to listen to and enjoy. It’s a classic example of the band’s ability to create music that resonates with listeners and stands the test of time here on RIM.

Some regional stations also used to use this or similar instrumentals to bring them up to the hour for a link to metro news.

ā€œNew Grooveā€ is my favourite of theirs. Normally, only ā€œAin’t No Sunshineā€ or ā€œThat Word (L.O.V.E)ā€ ever gets any airplay and even then that’s rare.

Following on from the mention of Jude Cole’s ā€œStart The Carā€ (over in the Great Songs on radio thread) and it’s regular airing on One FM… another song popped up on Youtube that would get a lot of airplay around the same time on One FM…

Peaked at #47… featuring Kim Bassinger & Ozzy Osbourne!
Been over 30 years since I’ve heard it. Definitely lost to radio!

Have a listen to this.

This song was everywhere back in 95/96. Triple J, B105, MMM… featured on many TV shows and promos. And yet I’d completely forgotten about it.

That was until I was cleaning through some old tat and came across this in amongst some old Wild CDs. Thought I’d listen to it - track 9 Tingly - Pop meant nothing until I listened to it. Wow!

Not much info around on KIX 91.5, but here’s a ½ decent aircheck from 1996.

Heard this on C91.3FM just before 10:00pm this evening.

One of my favourite songs from Rita Ora. Last time I heard this particular song on any radio station was way back in May 2013.

Rita Ora is awesome. Though such a shame her talents weren’t utilised fully after she signed with Jay Z.

From the dongs lost to radio files:

One of the greatest Australian EDM tracks of all time, right now is being blasted out of RIM FM.

Space invaders - Player (1)

Absolutely awesome track. Australian creativity at its finest. 1980 - made it to number 3 on Kent. Number 20 across the ditch in Aotearoa.

I love how the song features the game’s bassline and sound effects. Aussie brilliance.

Haven’t heard this on radio in quite some time. I remember three years ago when Nova would play this song quite often, as well as her previous hit 24/5.

Also, at 9:50pm on Saturday evening I heard ā€œCatchā€ by Kosheen on C91.3 FM. Not a bad follow-up to the bigger ā€œHide Uā€.

Oh yes. From Seven shades of heartbreak. Great voice and excellent vocal range. She’s a talent.

Out of my way I’m running… I’m gonna catch you if I can’ - Awesome track.

Though sadly most of the old guys on here are stuck-stuck-stuck in the 80s. They have even told me that any of that new-fangled music released after the 80s gives them headaches and they can’t handle all the ā€˜new fangled’ music kids listen to these days.

Keep posting. We need to shake this place up and introduce these fossils to some real music.

Ironically, it randomly played in my playlist last night for the first time since it had be released!

Without looking at the lyrics, i’m not sure if it’s a song for Christian or family Radio…

So sick and tired of all the oldies on here who are stuck stuck stuck in the 80s. Guess what? The tide has turned and we’re sick of all your 80s B-sides.

We’re good - Dua Lipa on Slam! Wow! What a track. reminds me of when Hot 91 (as it was known then would thrash this song, for some reason there are people on here who think that radio repetitions are a bad thing).

Very rarely heard on radio in 2025, just an absolutely fabulous track. Dua’s vocals are incredible.

We’re not meant to be like sleeping and cocaine
So let’s at least agree to go our separate ways
Not gonna judge you when you’re with somebody else
As long as you swear you won’t be pissed when I do it myself
Let’s end it like we should and say we’re good

Just amazing. I don’t think songs in the old days showed so much adaptability and variability. In one verse she’s actually changed vocal dynamics entirely.

If we’re talking about House on Fire, its lyrics (as catchy as they are I must admit) aren’t really that friendly for the genre of radio that you mentioned.

To be honest, though, that was the first time I’d come across that Life Adelaide station (interestingly, it was through Nova 91.9 in that market that I heard her song 24/5 quite frequently) on Lava. I always like to use the search function on my internet browser to see what stations were playing which artists/songs at a present time.

Knowing that smoothfm, Nova, Triple M, the Hit Netwok and KIIS’ playlists are syndicated nationally, when one song plays on its Sydney/Melbourne station that I like, I can wait another half-hour to listen to the same song again on the Adelaide station, then another half-hour later on the Brisbane station, and so on.

Which is what radio is about.

Honestly, I have had people on here tell me that they hate new music because it gets repeated.

They even have ā€˜radio’ in their user names.

Sorry.

Music radio is all about spins. The more spins the track gets the better.

An obvious dig at me.

I ask that you be more respectful of all members, not just me.

And I don’t hate new music, it just needs to be good music. I have posted ā€œgreatā€ songs from 90s and 00s too, and as time goes by, as more recent songs disappear from the airwaves, I’ll post some of them too.

I just don’t post them now because you hear it all the time - so it’s not very noteworthy to say I just heard the new Taylor Swift song and its great, because you’ll hear it again very soon. It’s just got to be a bit more memorable than that. To me, radio helps to create memories. You know what I’m saying?

OK. Point taken.

True. But seriously mate, if we all just live in the 80s this place will be as dead as a dodo. As self-indulgent as we all wanna be forever trying to recapture our youth, the 80s is done. You’ve done it to death (with all due respect). I’m 55 and I love the 80s.

But it’s time to start posting music on this thread that hasn’t been posted before.

Sorry, no go. Please don’t take offense, but no.

Happy for you to post what songs you like. And I’ll tell you what i think.

I find it better to use the ignore function with this guy. He is deliberately insulting/provocative and just trying to get a reaction. It’s really uninteresting.

On the mid north coast today, 2RE played a stack of songs I havent heard on radio for quite a while

Simply Red - The Right Thing
Janis Joplin - Peace Of My Heart
Joan Armatrading - I Love It When He Calls Me Names
Billy Thorpe - Poison Ivy
Uncanny X-Men - Everybody Wants To Work
Bruck Cockburn - If A Tree Falls
Hall & Oates - Out Of Touch (better than hearing Maneater for the billionth time)

The announcer (John Parkinson, I believe is the son of Doug Parkinson) also forward announced Stone Temple Pilots, although I didn’t get to hear which song it was… but very interesting they’d even play them.

…and in amongst it all, they played Dua Lipa’s Love Again (which I thought was odd, but I didn’t mind hearing it).

Over on MAX FM -
Shaggy - Oh Carolina
