Songs lost to radio

Another song of the same name, from 1996. While not released in Oz, this was a moderate hit in the States.

An Australian artist, Zoe Badwi, also released a song with the same title earlier in 2009.

I remember when that song came out it got a lot of regular airplay on Snow FM. I work part-time in the mountains in winter and did a season full-time in 2009, so it’s one of the songs that brings back memories. I listen regularly to the Munich radio station Antenne Bayern to improve my German proficiency and it has been playing ā€˜Release Me’ occasionally in the past few months. Another ā€˜lost to radio’ song that has been on the ABY playlist in the past few months is Tasmin Archer’s ā€˜Sleeping Satellite’ and I’ve enjoyed hearing it again.

From what I could gather, it received plenty of airplay on the three major pop stations in Sydney (2Day, Nova and Mix 106.5) in the final quarter of 2009 and intermittently into the first half of 2010.

For me it reminds me of the time when I was about to embark on my Higher School Certificate!

I remember hearing this song on 97.3 FM back then

Alex Party - Don’t Give Me Your Life (1995)

Despite charting at #13 on the ARIA charts, it seems to be greatly overshadowed by ā€œWrap Me Upā€. The local release of the CD single excluded the original radio edit (which, ironically, was used in the music video), something that might’ve affected radio airplay.

From a UK-based radio station titled ā€œAbsolute Radio 00sā€:

The band recently reunited and will be doing a tour of the UK towards the end of this year.

That’s a band i haven’t heard of for a while. They were basically Split Enz without the Finn Brothers

Heard Tin Tin Out with Emma Bunton’s 1999 cover of Edie Brickell and the New Bohemians’ ā€œWhat I Amā€ at my local shopping centre today which charted at #65 on the Aria charts in 1999-2000. A seldom heard upbeat cover and a fresh take on the 1988 hit at the time.

Just saw the log for Nova 96.9/Nova 100 for Friday October 4 and I noticed they played ā€œBefore the Worstā€ by The Script just after 6:30am.

While it’s not one of their well-known songs, it did peak at #10 on the ARIA Singles Chart in 2009, its commercial performance helped by the band performing the song at that year’s NRL Grand Final (in which a Melbourne Storm side nobody knew was illegally assembled at the time defeated the Parramatta Eels by 23-16).

While shopping in Woolworths Eastwood this morning (it’s best known for still having the very old logo at its shopfront), I heard ā€œRelease Meā€ by Agnes.

As I’ve touched on before, it received plenty of radio airplay in Australia in the final quarter of 2009, and peaked at #26 on the ARIA Singles Chart.

Hopefully this is the right thread. I couldn’t find a thread to post this in, but a few minutes ago I heard Guy Sebastian’s cover of Viva La Vida on KIIS 1065, and it’s nowhere to be found. It’s not even in the copyright system, I tried Shazamming it, and it said no result found. Possibly a new song. If you Google ā€œGuy Sebastian Viva La Vidaā€ in search, you’re greeted with results for the Coldplay track, or results for different Guy tracks.

I have a little snippet of it if anyone is interested in hearing Sebastian’s cover. If KIIS plays it again, I’ll record the entire track. Until he releases it, or until radio stations play it again, it’ll remain a piece of obscurity.

Maybe it’s a one off recording not intended for release, similar to the ā€œLike A Versuonā€ on Triple J?

UPDATE: Found it. Guy Sebastian uploaded it to his YouTube today, and it just happened to be that he performed it on The Kyle and Jackie O Show.

One song lost to radio… but would sound so good on SMOOTH RELAX…

Catfish - In the early hours.

The year was 1988 and I should be so lucky, FM104 were quite happy playing tracks like this Don Walker number… may not have really charted, but all the better…

You’d hear it during the day… (only once due to the no repeat workday)… but always at night as well… oh and of course in the early AM… Karl Van Est with his deep voice… spacing out the F-M- one-oh-four… with big gaps between the digits… then straight into…

Robert Cray Band - Don’t be afraid of the dark

F M 1 0 4 Rock in Stereo, then…

Marcia Davis - Don’t tell me the time.

And if you were at Le Scoops in Given Tce at the time (one of only five coffee shops in Brisbane)… you would have heard all three back to back… for everywhere you went, FM104 was in the air.

Yeah that song was in the freezer for decades, but someone at SCA must like it cos it gets a fair rotate on Oldskool 80s these days.

Gee I miss those days! I can’t hear Don’t Be Afraid Of The Dark or Don’t Tell Me The Time without thinking of FM104

I think her name is Martha Davis ,this was her solo hit from 1988,she’s also lead singer for the early 80s band The Motels.

Remember the Interactive cover of ā€œForever Youngā€? That was a dance banger back in '95 and yet it’s no longer played anymore.

Oh yes. I stand corrected. Thank you for that Karen.

Martha.

Martha is the absolute dead spit of the great Helen Clark.
