Seems to work for them though. All of these shows rate well. I think Daddo is #1FM in Sydney & Melbourne.

Are the day announcers not live? Understandably the weekend and night shows with the big names wouldn’t be.

No.

Sydney and Melbourne have the same daytime announcers, and given some announcer content is localised, it could only be wholly live in one market at best.

I did read somewhere that Smooth are considering different logs for Sydney and Melbourne.

Smooth Breakfast live in both cities (Mike Person / Bogart). 9:00 Ty Frost (Melbourne into both cities), 13:00 Simon Diaz (Melbourne into both cities) 17:00 Byron Webb (Sydney into both cities) 21:00 Cam Dado into both

It’s voiced tracked as if it were live as in the announcer would perform a voice track for Melbourne and then do the same for Sydney after and customise it. Unlike when Cameron Daddo hosts which is voice tracked hours in advance. They also use the same news presenters but broadcast different content. If Smooth really want to compete and be number one FM station consistently they need to be local in both cities during the day.

Agree. It’s penny pinching to the extreme.

Most of smooth’s announcers sound like they’d be at home working on a phone sex chat line.

I get the need to be calm, but David Campbell sounds like he’s hard.

Richard Mercer would feel right at home at smoothfm if they had him!

I agree with the commentary on here regarding the Smooth announcers. They do border on sounding smarmy. They should listen to Smooth or Magic in the UK. The announcers there manage to sound relaxing yet not smarmy, and importantly “alive”.

Smarmy is the right word.

The male announcers sound like their on a mix of Xanax and Viagra.

If I spoke to females at my work with that tone of voice, I reckon I would get a written warning.

David Reyne was the worst when it came to that. I did feel like I was listening to a sex hotline late at night when he was on smooth.

Having a love Songs and dedications show might be a good fit for Smooth now that they have replaced mix/kiss as a female skewing FM easy listening music station. Maybe even get Richard Mercer back to host it.

Some interesting comments above! Thanks to @Troiboi for kicking off this little discussion. I just replied to him with the first word that came into my head to describe ( imo ) the Smooth announcing style … Smarmy. I wasn’t really sure if that was the right word. So anyway I just googled “oxford dictionary definition of smarmy” and the top row response said : too polite in a way that is not sincere - synonym smooth .

Wow so the synonym of smarmy is smooth … must be the right word then !

To me the Smooth voice style is quite artificial / condescending / wooden …

Should be a fascinating S1 survey and I reckon as far as my Sydney market goes … Easy Music 2UE is a good chance to clip some Smooth / 2CH / WS listeners by being a happier more relatable and authentic all rounder. Lets see …

lols I was thinking today how that one little comment of mine gave this thread more action than the whole time I’ve been here

Well done. Certainly more action on this thread than on air at Smooth.

And LIVE action too… None of these comments are pre-recorded hours or even days in advance.

This discussion compelled me to listen a bit haha… I am glad overall I am not the only one who thinks the vibe is not natural. This might be a copy and paste of a format approach from abroad. The Aussie way is more natural.

Whilst I am sure Richard Mercer put on an act with his old Love songs dedication back in the 90s. It was successful and a fun show. I felt he really did interact with people well (he spoke to), as well engage with the audience. Richard played the part very well. It died with KIIS came along. Don’t know why Smooth didn’t pick that concept up again. Could be having callers makes the process too expensive. Return on investment isn’t there? Or this concept doesn’t work in the 2020s… Maybe it could offend a group. I don’t know who came up with idea, if Richard approach MIX 106.5 FM with that idea? I can’t really recall if George Moore and others sounded fake on the old MIX. I know Mike Carlton was just himself. Some would say the late Stan Zemanek (on 2UE) was also a big act too (50%) just to wind up callers. Again maybe these types shows are too risky for radio these days. Much safer to have scripts.

Anyway off topic but just wanted to show an example where a smarmy show works… Although Richard was probably more genuine in a way. The whole love god nickname I think was great. I wasn’t a regular listener, but I had friends who did try their luck to express their feelings to a secret person. It was a fun show and maybe lead to people finding the one which is great. Smooth should of picked this up when KIIS came online. I know he did a gig at WSFM after but it was a “your song” show it didn’t last and it wasn’t the same.

Yes scripted radio makes my skin crawl and is the main factor of why I won’t listen to Smarmy, oops Smooth. Not a fan at all
