Shortwave. HF Radio. High Frequency

If you connect a better aerial, you’ll find a lot more stations receivable.

Here’s my bandscan of between 11.5 MHz and 12.2 MHz (the 25m band), with 35 stations in that band alone, including stations from as far as the Middle East and Europe:

Here’s some reception from Spain coming in pretty well:

You should be able to get stations in the daytime as well. Here’s a quick clip of a few of the stations I picked up just now from Europe and Africa at 3pm including Hellinki Radiophonia from Greece, Voice of Turkey from Turkey, Radio Algerienne from Algeria, Radio Romania from Romania and the BBC from Austria:

Thanks @TV4 for the RNZ shortwave details.

Have tried on my Sony ICF-SW7600GR and this is receivable on all freqs at all times in Brisbane. Outside, the aerial doesn’t need to be extended for perfect reception.

Reception is clearer than the inefficient antennas of the 50Kw domestic HF sites in the NT which were only audible until shortly after sunrise and from shortly before sunset, no useable daytime reception.

The ABC should be embarrassed at NZ’s superior investment and provide SW service at this level on both analogue and DRM.

The DRM service from RNZ for Pacific Islands as breakfast programming in their time zone is also audible as digital hash on weekday mornings.

Checking the RNZ change of freq times and I find 11725kHz is weak about thirty minutes before moving down the dial. It happens on sunset, There should be a change at 1900 NZST

Thought I’d drop some schedules here for some English services on SW.

English Language Shortwave Services that can be heard in Australia:

Radio Romania International: - Full English services to South East Asia beamed on India, with some local Folk music.

Radio Kuwait: - Apparently a English feed beamed on South East Asia, Radio Kuwait Starts off in Arabic (with English Idents) for roughly 15 minutes then audio drops and takes the English feed of “SuperStation FM 99.7 Radio Kuwait” playing English Pop Music. (Seems to drop a few random idents stating it’s 11970khz at the start of the service which appears to be their DRM frequency?) A few days a week the transmitter seems to play up and drop in and out a fair bit (Maybe using old equipment that needs serviced?)
15530khz 3:00pm AEST - 5:00pm AEST

Radio New Zealand: Mix of Pacific and English programming and music.

Thanks for going to that effort to upload.

The DRM ‘hash’ is audible along Australia’s east coast, have heard it from Sydney to Bundaberg. Good to know it reaches Melbourne also.

@Starpicket , what’s your reception/experience bee of the DRM+ test up at Dockers Plains? Can you receive ti at night or too close for skywave?

Usually I can hear the raw data but lots of interference from other frequencies makes them hard to decode. I might need to erect a more resonant antenna for the MW band.

I have however had some luck decoding the BBC and Chinese DRM.

This thread may be appropriate for this but someone in Eastern Europe acquired some Shortwave Transmitter and tuned it to 4625khz which is the frequency of UVB-76 and chaos ensured Infamous Russian Number Station UVB-76 Begins Sending Strange Messages | IFLScience

For those interested there will be a special Shortwave broadcast tonight from Electronic Music composer C.M Obrecht. Should be on at 8pm AEDT TXing on 15730khz from Vienna Austria and beamed towards South East Asia/Pacific. It absolutely smashed into Aus the last time he did a broadcast so hopefully this one goes alright too. Should be something cool and different to listen to on the bands.

It’s audible here in Melbourne but not as good as the last time.

He should of added times on that video, its not always broadcasting on 11910khz all the time. It’s misleading to those who aren’t familiar with how Shortwave works. You can’t expect to tune into that frequency every time and hear Voice of Korea, times and conditions matter.

The BBC is increasing shortwave transmissions (in English) to better cover Ukraine and Russia in the wake of the conflict over there.

Goes to show just how valuable a technology shortwave can be in providing essential and potentially life saving information, especially when domestic communications infrastructure is either under constant attack (in Ukraine’s case) or forced to spout a dictator’s propoganda (in Russia’s case).

There’s a new shortwave station here in Australia that has popped up on 4835khz today calling itself “Shortwave Australia”. According to the ACMA licence it is transmitting from Neilborough Victoria with a licenced power output of 5kw. They also seem to have a night frequency of 2310khz.

Its coming in nicely here into Melbourne.

Thanks @Starpicket, you should link
your second video.

I loved the thumping of Guthrie and the ABC turning the domestic HF off.

Thanks,
Here’s the second video I uploaded.
Hopefully the station stays around for a while.

This is the guys website, he is a ham who has gotten 2 shortwave frequencies licensed instead of playing his content on the ham bands which I always thought wasn’t exactly legal to begin with

Ah I thought it was the same guy, I’ve heard him and others before TXing music around the 160m band which I didn’t think was too legal. I’ve been told by some people before that it’s legal to TX content there but I doubt it, it would be the same if I started TXing music in the 40m band, definitely not legal.
