Lucius “Luke” Carpenter leaves for Alaska in 1900 as part of the gold rush but is buried in a glacial avalanche. After 67 years he is thawed out and returns to the home of his now-elderly son, Edwin, a land developer in California.
Luke decides to assimilate to 1967 California and shaves off his beard, but this just makes him look very much like his grandson and causes confusion, He is scared of cars initially, but eventually gets used to them.
