To mark the 20th anniversary of her iconic win, Cathy Freeman shares her full story for the first time and exclusively in FREEMAN on Sunday, 13 September, 7.40pm on ABC and ABC iview.
In 49.11 seconds, Cathy Freeman’s win at the Sydney Olympics in 2000 brought Australia together as a nation. Watched by billions of people worldwide, the 400-metre sprint on the evening of September 25 had the country glued to the TV. Everyone remembers where they were on that spring night in 2000 when Cathy, wearing a futuristic green and white bodysuit, cemented her place in sporting history.

Twenty years later, Cathy Freeman remains one of Australia’s most popular sporting figures, held in tremendous affection by the public for the role she played in shaping our national identity.
FREEMAN is a cinematic portrait of the 49.11 second race that is still etched in our hearts and minds. Drawing on archival footage and a series of intimate conversations with Cathy Freeman, the film takes viewers on a journey through Cathy’s remarkable sporting career and the frenzied build-up to September 2000. Cathy’s fast-paced climb to the top of the world is mirrored by the rise of a people’s movement supporting reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians. Her story became the symbol of a much larger struggle for equality.
Cathy’s experience is brought to life by stunning performances from Lillian Banks of Bangarra Dance Theatre, as choregraphed by Stephen Page, creating an emotionally-charged insight into Cathy’s spirit and mindset as she prepared to compete on the greatest stage on earth.
Cathy Freeman shares her most intimate thoughts, revisiting her past through montages of projected images, and reveals what it felt like to be at the centre of such a unique and significant event.
With insights from Freeman’s mother, insiders and media commentators, the film gives previously unseen glimpses into a moment of rare intensity.
FREEMAN is the story of the nation coming together around an Indigenous Australian female athlete who delivered when it mattered, on the greatest stage on earth. The film sheds light on one of Australia’s proudest moment and explores why, 20 years on, it still means so much to so many of us.

A six-part series for the ABC from writers Nakkiah Lui ( Kiki and Kitty ) and Gabe Dowrick ( Skin Trade). This comedy follows young Aboriginal woman Charlie (played by Lui), who experiences her own personal cataclysmic event when her life crumbles around her. Escaping the fallout, Charlie finds herself at the centre of a hilariously mismatched community of doomsday preppers. Preppers will be produced by Sylvia Warmer ( Kiki and Kitty ) and executive produced by Liz Watts ( Kiki and Kitty , The King ). A Porchlight Films production, this project was funded through Screen Australia’s Indigenous Department and has received major production investment from the ABC. Popular children’s live action-adventure show Itch will return to ABC ME with a 10-part second series from Komixx Entertainment. The series follows science-obsessed teenager Itchingham Lofte who finds something strange is happening in his town of Seaburgh after a boat explosion and dead fish wash up on the shore. When he discovers Greencorp are operating a secret lab, it’s up to Itch and his friends to uncover the truth before it’s too late. Returning for season two are producer Amanda Morrison, writer/producer Melanie Halsall, writers Heather Wilson and Jessica Brookman and director Nicholas Verso. In their fourth and final gastronomic expedition, Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon set out from the ruins of Troy in modern-day Turkey as they head to Greece to retrace the steps of legendary king Odysseus, the hero of Homer’s epic poem The Odyssey. They visit Lesvos, where Sappho wrote her love poetry; Macedonia, where Aristotle was born and tutored Alexander the Great; Athens, home of Plato and Socrates; the Peloponnese, the land of Mycenae, Argos, Sparta and the entrance to the underworld, before finally arriving at Ithaca, home to Odysseus. Steve and Rob’s semi-fictional alter- egos seek out culture, history, breath-taking vistas and, of course, some of the finest food in Europe.

Louis Theroux: The Night in Question

At a time of increased scrutiny about what constitutes sexual assault, award-winning documentary-maker Louis Theroux heads to American college campuses and comes face-to-face with students whose universities are accusing them of sexual assault.
As reports of sexual violence have dramatically increased in recent years, the government has urged US colleges to enforce a stricter code of sexual conduct amongst students. Employing specialist administrators to carry out investigations into alleged misdemeanours, they now have the power to permanently exclude those they deem ‘responsible’. For the victims of sexual assault these new processes, which require less stringent levels of proof than criminal cases, have allowed accusations that might have never been heard in a court of law to be vindicated. But alleged perpetrators believe the attempt to be more vigilant about rape and assault has turned into an overreaction that tramples on due process, and harms innocent people.
At the start of this journey, Louis meets a neuroscience major called Saif Khan, who has been accused of raping a fellow student. His University is investigating the claims separately even though Saif has been found not guilty in a court of law. Though Saif continuously pleads his innocence, Louis is drawn into an increasingly complex world, where separating fact from fiction becomes increasingly challenging. He also meets young women whose claims of sexual assault have previously fallen on deaf ears, who believe that a new approach to handling allegations of sex crimes is not only necessary but long overdue. One such student is Mollie Johnson; whose experience is a powerful reminder that there is now a broader understanding of what sexual assault looks like.

Produced by leading drama indie Mammoth Screen as a co-production with MASTERPIECE, and created by writer andproducer Daisy Goodwin, the brand new series sees critically-acclaimed actress Jenna Coleman (Doctor Who)reprise her role as the young Queen, alongside Tom Hughes (Paula) as Prince Albert.
Joining the leads, Laurence Fox (Lewis) plays charismatic and wayward Foreign Secretary Lord Palmerston, whilst Tony and Olivier Award nominee Kate Fleetwood (Harlots)takes the role of Victoria’s mysterious sister Feodora, who makes an unexpected return into the Queen’s life.
In addition, actor and comedian John Sessions (The Loch) stars as Prime Minister John Russell, whilst Lily Travers (Kingsman) plays the Duchess of Monmouth. Nicholas Audsley (The White Princess), David Burnett (The Mummy) and Sabrina Bartlett (Versailles) also join the cast as new characters.
Starting in 1848, the third instalment of the lavish drama depicts a turbulent and uncertain time for both Europe and the monarchy. With revolutions on the continent and the Chartist movement reaching its peak in London, Victoria is under pressure from the government to leave London for her own safety.
Creator Daisy Goodwin says: “Victoria and Albert are the most famous couple of the nineteenth century, but underneath the united facade, their relationship is at breaking point and it is a struggle for mastery that neither side can win.”
Praised for its opulent production values, Victoria is one of ITV’s most successful dramas, with the first series being the highest rating drama of 2016 on the channel.
The eight-part series was commissioned by ITV’s Head of Drama, Polly Hill. It has been executive produced by Damien Timmer, Kate McKerrell and Daisy Goodwin for Mammoth Screen, and Rebecca Eaton for Masterpiece. Victoria is distributed by ITV Studios Global Entertainment.
No Time For Quiet

During a long hot summer, 40 girls and gender diverse youth aged 10 to 17 converge in Brunswick for the inaugural week-long GIRLS ROCK! MELBOURNE Camp. Greeting them are a host of dedicated volunteers- local female rock legends and punked up teachers, all keen to empower each of the participants through rock ‘n’ roll.
Born out of frustration in Portland, USA, in 2001, the GIRLS ROCK! movement has become something of a DIV legend. Fed up with experiencing inequality in the music industry, local female musicians sought to establish a grassroots program to facilitate the empowerment of the next generation of female and gender non-conforming musicians. From this seed grew a global movement which eventually made its way to Melbourne, Australia in 2017.
Over the course of the week, and the months after camp, we follow LUCY, ZEIRO, PHOEBE & DAKOTA and
their band-mates and coaches, as they struggle to find their sense of belonging and identity through music. As the camp progresses- and in its aftermath -the importance of this rare community becomes increasingly apparent. For female and gender diverse youth trying to find their voice, there clearly is NO TIME FOR QUIET.

When Australia started talking about going into isolation, ABC Religion & Ethics put out a call to film schools and emerging filmmakers.
‘Are you in lockdown with a great story happening around you and thinking to yourself, this would make a fabulous documentary?’
Seven participants with the strongest pitches from all over the country were chosen to document their lives for Lockdown Stories.
Mentored remotely by ABC producers they filmed their own stories, often in challenging circumstances.The result is a mix of intimate, moving, funny and heart-warming short stories of their personal experience in lockdown.
Bernie, from North Fitzroy, tells of his favourite Melbourne restaurant cooking meals for frontline medical workers.
International student Anna lives in a one room apartment in Brisbane. Her family are in the COVID- 19 epicentre in Northern Italy, and her beloved Nonna and mother have tested positive.
Eighteen-year-old Yolngu woman Siena from North Eastern Arnhem Land tells how her community of Yirrkala closed its borders to protect their precious elders.
Neve returns to Launceston where her mother has called the family home to isolate together. Every family member is a frontline health worker except for Neve, and she wants to find a way to thank them.
Extrovert Tyla experiences a very different Passover this year, as her colourful Jewish family try to embrace domestic isolation in Melbourne.
Lou lives alone in tropical Cairns. Her work planting trees continues throughout the pandemic, but every day she must confront the mental and emotional fear of isolating alone in paradise.
Eric’s family flew to Perth from Brazil for his wedding in March, then got stuck there. The only thing they can do to keep themselves sane is to laugh, sing and dance.
These stories from our next generation of filmmakers offer a unique insight into how Australia lived through these times, from the inside.
