Maybe next year TCA will remain at 5pm during Tests like during the Olympics?

Week 50 2021

Sydney was the only market to not see falls with Seven News down 48,000 across the 5 cities and Nine down 43,000 in week 50.

Nine had a rare win in the three east coast markets. Melbourne saw the biggest turn around where Seven was down 31,000 against Nine’s loss of 9,000. It is Nine’s first win in 16 weeks in the Melbourne market.

Brisbane also delivered Nine a win despite a 21k loss for the bulletin from week 49 with Seven down just 12k.

Seven did better in Adelaide with a home test as lead-in, down just 100 while Nine lost 6,000. In Perth both bulletins were down around 8,000.

Week 51 2021

Some higher ratings early in the week with news out of Queensland offset some poor results on Friday to keep much of the table in green.

Seven was notably up 40,000 from week 50 while Nine was only up 1,000.

Another win for Seven in Sydney where Nine’s bulletin was down 25% from week 51 of 2021
Melbourne and Brisbane were close results with Nine just ahead in both markets.
Adelaide and Perth saw small gains for all bulletins.

Week 52 2021

A clean sweep for Seven on the second last week of the year. Sven was down an average of 3,000 with Nine dropping by 40,000 including drops in all markets and the lowest rated bulletin of the year so far on Friday.

It was a very good final week for Seven News and a good year overall. Seven was up a massive 85,000 from week 52 and its best result since week 42 in October. All markets were up including Melbourne by 45,000. That saw Seven win all markets though Nine News was only down 700 from the previous week.

It really was Seven’s year winning all 53 weeks of the ratings year in the 5-city market at 6pm and 6.30pm. That is better than 2021 when Nine managed a rare 2 weekly wins.

It was the Melbourne market that saw the biggest improvement for Seven this year winning 38 weeks after only winning 17 weeks in 2021.

The bulletin also improved in Sydney going from 7 wins last year to 11 this year while Brisbane was a big improvement from 14 to 24. Adelaide saw a clean sweep this year after 50 wins and one tie last year while Perth was again a clean sweep.

I will post weekly averages later.

Weeks 1 - 53 2022

The weekday results of average audience are fairly similar to the weeks won numbers. The Brisbane average is closer than the weeks won would suggest with Seven winning at 6pm. The Sunday and Saturday bulletin averages are also included for interest; as we don’t track weekly wins on the weekend. If these were taken into account in Brisbane, Seven would have won the year.

2022 vs 2021

Ratings numbers were down especially on the east coast, though Seven Adelaide bucked the trend and was up 6% year-on-year.

Note: I’ve done my best to correct the data for the errors that were made in the initial OzTAM numbers, chiefly affecting Seven News Sydney.

Week 1 2022

Seven News got the year off to a great start at the beginning of the week (900k on Monday), but disruptions to the third test lead-in saw the momentum falter as the week progressed, ending with Nine winning three markets on Friday.

Overall, though, Seven won all markets except Brisbane where, in a big news week, Seven saw a consistent pattern of its audience dropping off from 6pm to 6.30pm.

Nine News was notable for being up 73,000 on the previous week including 31,000 in Brisbane, 22k in Melbourne and 19k in Sydney.

Seven News was down 12,000 including by 35,000 in Melbourne and 5,000 in Sydney, while Brisbane (8,000), Adelaide (11,000) and Perth (9,000) were all up - markets where the cricket is not the direct lead-in to news.

Week 3 2022

Rarely do you see a more comprehensive win in the 6pm news hour outside of perhaps Olympics and Commonwealth Games. The Australian Open tennis was not only a poor lead in to the 6pm news, the break out coverage of matches on 9Go! also drew viewers away from Nine’s main channel.

Compared to the previous week, Nine was down 55,000 in the five-city market while Seven improved by 26,000. Seven was up 10k in Sydney, 25k in Melbourne and 3k in Brisbane.

Seven Adelaide that featured a new presenting duo dropped 8k week-on-week but so did Nine. The result was up 9% on the equivalent week of last year while Nine was down 36%, so Seven would be very happy with the result at this early stage.

Meanwhile, Nine dropped 14k in Sydney, 8k in Melbourne, 17k in Brisbane and 8k in Perth.

Overall, Nine was down 32% on week 3 of 2022 when it won all east coast markets while Seven was down 9%.

Seven was up 8,000 overall thanks toa 24k improvement in Sydney with small drops in other markets.

Compared to week 4 of 2022, Seven was 10% lower while Nine is down 22%.

Week 5 2022

With the end of the Australian Open and the return of new episodes of afternoon games shows, Nine News was much more competitive in week five.

Nine was up in all markets with the 5-city number improving by 46,000. Seven lost 14,000 overall for a 60k turn around.

Nine took out its second week in Sydney. Though up only 5,000, Seven dropped 23,000 from week 4.

In Melbourne, however, Seven was up 18k to Nine’s 8k increase.

Brisbane became more competitive with Seven taking out a 3k win after dropping 13k as Nine improved by 8k.

Nine was also up in Adelaide by 9k as Seven dropped 6k while both bulletins improved in Perth; Seven by 10k and Nine by 16k.

One more week of the summer ratings period to go.

Week 6 2022

News viewing was down for Seven in the final week of the summer ratings period with the bulletin recording its lowest audience of the year so far for the five-city total. Nine was down slightly from the previous week but recorded its second-best result of 2023.

In Sydney there was a tie at 6pm, the first for the year in any market, but Nine won at 6.30 to win across the hour for a very close result.

In Melbourne, Seven was again the winner despite dropping by 34,000 from week 5 as Nine dropped 21,000 .

Nine moved ahead in Brisbane to win its second week of the year as Seven posted its lowest audience of the year across the week. That included its two lowest rated bulletins of 2023 on Thursday and Friday.

Seven continued to do well with its new team in Adelaide as the only bulletin in any market to be on par with the same week of 2022.

In Perth both bulletins were within 1,000 of the previous week’s result with Seven maintaining its dominance.

Week 7 2022

Some welcome green shading for week seven and the start of a count for the new year’s ratings.

Seven was up 21,000 in the 5-city market with Melbourne contributing 8,000, Brisbane 14,000, Adelaide a 4,000 increase and Perth 2,000 while Sydney dropped 7,000.

Nine edged up by 8,000 with an 8,000 increase in Melbourne and 2,000 increase in Brisbane the most notable. The other markets were down by 1,000 or less.

Nine’s margin in Sydney was one of its healthiest while in Brisbane it closed the gap to end up winning the second half hour; looks like Seven’s second half problem might continue in the SEQ market. In Melbourne and Adelaide, Seven pulled ahead slightly while Perth was steady.

Week 8 2022

Week two of the survey saw 6pm news viewing numbers trend upwards in most markets, Melbourne being an exception for both bulletins.

Overall, Nine kept getting closer to Seven compared to earlier in the year, up 21,000 from week 7 while Seven was up 4,000.

In Brisbane where both bulletins have gone hard on crime in their promos this week, Nine posted an impressive 19,000 gain, including 21,000 at 6pm to take the week while Seven’s promo efforts got them 3,000 extra viewers.

Nine continued to pull away from Seven in Sydney now with five weeks won to three for Seven. By contrast Seven’s margin in Melbourne and Adelaide got bigger. In Perth Nine was up 3,000 and Seven down 4,000.

Melbourne numbers seem to reflect the warm weather during the evenings.

Week 9 2022

After some encouraging improved numbers over the last two weeks, news ratings were down for most bulletins in week nine. Seven slipped by 19,000 in the five city market with drops in all markets except Perth while Nine lost 16,000 down in three markets.

There was not much change in Sydney with Seven’s bulletin notable for being 26% lower than week nine of 2022.

In Melbourne, Nine was up by 5,000 as Seven dropped 4,000 though Seven was still an easy winner.

In Brisbane the battle for who had the best teenage crime crisis story saw Nine win its second week of the survey, 10,000 clear of Seven winning four nights.

Nine continued to lose ground year-on-year in Adelaide while both bulletins in Perth were up on last week.

How many years do we have to go back, for the last time Nine News Melbourne did not win a week yet (either by now Week 9 or longer)?

Interesting question. While this doesn’t directly answer your question, I know that Nine News in Melbourne (and Sydney for that matter) won the first few weeks in 2010, only to then lose the year 14-26. In Sydney it was extremely tight with Seven just winning by 21-1-18.

Nine was down 26% including +26% in all east coast markets, 19% in Adelaide and 16% in Perth.
