Seven v Nine News Ratings Comparisons

We are taking about the number of viewers of the weekday news that is seen Monday to Friday. Days won are irrelevant, it is how many people are watching across the week on average. Sunday and Saturday numbers don’t count as the weekend bulletins get different coded entries in OzTAM.

Thank you for the explanation, just wanted to clear that up as I was a bit unsure of how the system worked.

5 cities: A massive 90,000 turn around in viewer’s news preference for week 9. Seven down 81,000 across the 5 cities and Nine up 12,000. Nine’s improvement comes on the back of the return to its normal afternoon program that sees Hot Seat as a lead in along the east coast and Afternoon News in Adelaide and Perth. Seven lost audience at 6pm and 6.30pm in all markets for its lowest weekly average of 2021. The importance of lead-in was highlighted as Nine gained audience everywhere except Melbourne, the home of the Australian Open.

Sydney: Nine was back on top after Seven won the first two weeks of the rating year. Nine up 14,000, Seven down 8,000.

Melbourne: Melbourne was the only market were Nine lost audience and it did so in a big way. Without the local AO as a lead-in the bulletin was down 44,000, However, Seven also had a big fall with 29,000 fewer watching on average each night.

Brisbane: The return of Hot Seat helped Nine to a win in Brisbane, up 6,000 as Seven dropped 14,000.

Adelaide: The return of Nine’s afternoon news in Adelaide had a positive effect at 6pm with Nine just 9,000 behind Seven; the gap last week was 30,000.

Perth: While Seven still dominated in Perth, Nine was a lot closer than the last two weeks; up 26,000 while Seven slipped 20,000 week-on-week.

How important is the 5.30 pm timeslot of Seven and Nine? For all the effort that goes into promos, sets, and graphics and the money for key presentation personal plus bribes to viewers through competitions; the best way to get more viewers at 6pm is to get more viewers at 5.30pm.

Exactly right.

The sole reason Nine News Sydney win in that market is because of the dominance of Hot Seat.

With no Hot Seat on during the AO weeks, Seven won Sydney.

I reckon if they moved the AO over to 9Gem at 5pm and had Hot Seat on as normal, Nine would’ve beat Seven in Sydney.

I honestly think we’ll see The Chase Australia outrate Hot Seat on the East Coast (at least initially) once the Larry Emdur-fronted episodes of Seven’s 5pm game show begin.

Also while the lead-in does matter (otherwise Nine probably wouldn’t smash Seven on most Sunday nights during the NRL season), I personally don’t believe it’s the only reason people choose one news service over another.

A bright side that Nine Perth is slightly improving.

5 cities: This week it was Nine’s turn to shed audience with all markets except Brisbane dropping week-on-week for a total of 22,000 fewer across the 5 cities. Seven dropped in Sydney and Brisbane but that was offset by a rise in Perth so overall less than a 2,000 difference from last week.

Sydney: Seven was fairly competitive across most of the week even winning Tuesday but Friday’s team was beaten by 40,000 so that Nine ended up with a comfortable win across the week.

Melbourne: Seven edged a bit closer to Nine with a narrow win on Thursday and a tie on Friday seeing Nine’s margin slip to 13,000.

Brisbane: SEQ was the only market where Nine improved, up 7,000 while Seven’s audience decline since the end of the tennis continued, losing another 11,000 to a year low audience including three days below 150k.

Adelaide: Seven was steady while Nine slipped slightly but is up 53% from week 10 of last year.

Perth: Seven was up 18,000 week-on-week maintaining its big lead over Nine. However, Nine us up 30% from the equivalent week of 2020.

Not only that, but the 6:30pm half of Seven News was narrowly beaten by ABC News in Sydney on Friday night.

Looks like viewers aren’t adjusting well to having two newsreaders on Fri/Sat nights on Seven.

Either remove Angela and go back to Michael solo on Fridays and Saturdays, or adjust Mark’s roster to Monday to Friday (since he seems to be rating better than Usher and Cox), and therefore Michael and Angela go to Saturday and Sunday nights.

Changes need to be made to Perth. This is bloody terrible.

Jeremy was only 1k ahead of Deborah Knight (on Nine’s A Current Affair) though…

I think just about everyone here knew this was going to happen. Seven really should’ve just allowed Michael Usher to continue presenting solo on Friday/Saturday nights with Angela Cox being the 3rd in-line reader.

Also of mild interest: Seven have not won a single week during the 6.30pm half hour so far this ratings year. Realistically they’re probably satisfied enough with the performance of Angie Asimus in the main forecasting position, but I reckon it’d be a good idea to bring in a new Sydney-based meteorologist to fill the (massive) gap left by David Brown’s departure late last year.

Nine News Perth would probably be loosing money for the network compared to the likely cash cows that are their 6pm bulletins on the East Coast?

While it can’t be stressed enough that I don’t think such a move would be good, it’s a wonder that Nine hasn’t yet “pulled a 10 News First” by moving the presentation of their Perth 6pm news to Sydney or Melbourne.

Is it possible to do a new thread with breakfast shows and morning shows comparisons? Would be useful information. Thanks.

Unfortunately our agreement with OzTAM does not allow posting ratings that fall outside the top 20. I do try to most what I can in each daily ratings topic.

5 cities: The Oprah interview boosted news numbers especially towards the beginning of this week. Seven gained an average of 31,000 extra viewers each night with Nine up 25,000. Nine would have been higher had Friday’s numbers not fallen to the lowest weekday result so far for the year.

Sydney: Seven went backwards 5,000 while Nine continued to lead up 15,000 from last week.

Melbourne: Seven took out the week, good news heading into the start of the AFL season. The bulletin was up 9% on week 11 in 2020 while Nine was down 5%.

Brisbane: SEQ recorded similar results to the week before with both bulletins up around 9,000 week-on-week. Seven’s result is 17% lower than week 11 of 2020 - Nine is 6% lower.
.

Adelaide: Seven maintained its lead from last week as Nine continues to be up around 50% from last year.

Perth: Perth viewers it seems are not as interested in royalty as the rest of Australia. Out west both bulletins shed 7,000 week-on-week.

5 cities: After receiving a bump last week from the Oprah interview revelations, most bulletins lost ground this week with Seven down an average of 28,000 per day and Nine down 38,000. Comparisons to the equivalent week of 2020 will become increasingly irrelevant as the COVID-19 crisis coverage was into full swing 12 months ago.

Sydney: Sydney bucked the downward trend, helped by Friday’s coverage of the rain event pushing numbers higher. Nine picked up an extra 15,000 and Seven was up 5,000.

Melbourne: Second win for Seven with a higher margin that last week though both bulletins were down - Seven by 20k and Nine by 30k.

Brisbane: Seven improved in Brisbane winning two days with some solid promos across the week plus a new prize giveaway. It wasn’t enough to beat Nine that maintained its solid lead.

Adelaide: A close result in Adelaide where Nine had a rare win on Wednesday. Nine Adelaide is the only bulletin to rate higher than week 12 of 2020.

Perth: Thursday and Friday AFL took viewers away from 6pm news on both networks with Seven down 14,000 and Nine slipping 12,000. Seven posted a survey low but still recording double Nine’s result.

5 cities: Seven won at 6pm but Nine took the lead at 6.30pm with just 300 separating the two bulletins across the hour - after rounding, a tie. Coverage of political scandals and east coast flooding helped see most bulletins up week on week. Nine lifted by an average of 86,000 each night and Seven was up an average 30,000.

Sydney: Both bulletins were boosted by their flood coverage with Monday seeing both over 300,000. Nine maintained its lead for another easy win of every night.

Melbourne: Nine improved 23,000 to post a win after Seven had won the previous 2 weeks with Seven down by an average 3,000. Nine won every night except Thursday

Brisbane: Big win for Nine in Brisbane up by over 30,000 with its flood coverage drawing big numbers early in the week - over 200k on three nights. Seven managed 200,000 on Monday and finished the week up 4,000.

Adelaide: A close result in Adelaide saw Nine win Thursday and close the gap across the week to just 3,000. Nine is up 16% on week 13 of 2020 when news numbers had surged due to the the start of the pandemic.

Perth: Not much change in Perth with Seven double Nine’s audience again.

I just don’t understand the Brisbane audience and their appetite for 9’s sensationalist approach.

Wow! Nine would be bumped they didn’t win overall. Just a few hundred viewers separating the whole hour.

However, I don’t think Seven Brisbane should try to emulate Nine. Rather they should offer a less tabloid approach. I’ve tried to track what sort of promos seem to work for Seven and to me it seems that the more news based and/or investigative pieces see Seven do best. By contrast while Nine’s audience is attracted by the tabloid promos, when Seven run that type it doesn’t seem to work.

Overall for this week however, Nine gained the bulk of extra viewers looking for flood/rain event news and overwhelmingly was Brisbane’s choice across the day. Today , Morning News and Afternoon News all won for Nine, so it was pretty natural that 6pm would see Nine ahead.
