9 News continues to dominate in Sydney, officially winning its 11th year in a row. They have only lost 16 weeks in 11 years. Huge achievement.

5 cities: Changes from the previous week were most significant in Melbourne and Adelaide. Seven was up a massive 102,000 and Nine by 82,000. It was easily Seven’s best week of the year with Monday to Thursday numbers all in the top 10 rated bulletins for the year. It was also Nine’s best week of 2021.

Sydney: Big numbers continued in Sydney - Seven was up 9k while Nine was down 7k but was still an easy winner. With 20 weeks won Nine can’t be beaten in Sydney based on that measure.

Melbourne: Nine’s Monday bulletin was its highest rated for the year with the weekly average also its best. It just beat Seven that also posted its best week of the year

Brisbane: Big news on Wednesday saw Seven come within 1,000 of Nine. Across the week Nine won all days and was up 6k on the previous week - no change for Seven. With 20 weeks won Nine can’t be beaten in Brisbane based on that measure.

Adelaide: Both bulletins recorded their highest audiences of the year with Monday - Thursday the top 4 ratinged for each.

Perth: Seven built its lead up to 100k over Nine for week 30.

Nine says they have won 21 weeks so far in Sydney. Don’t know where the difference comes in as I have them on 20.

5 cities: This week was the big test to see how many of those extra Olympic viewers Seven could hold onto and how many would switch back to Nine (or just stop watching). The results were fairly good though mixed.

Nationally Seven lost an average of 169,000 viewers each night across the hour. Of those, Nine picked up 28,000. That brought the differential between the two down to 100,000 and meant that 140,000 news viewers during the Olympics found something else to do.

  • In Sydney, Seven was down 50k and Nine was up 23k to be the only Nine bulletin to win a market.

  • In Melbourne, it was a split result with Nine winning at 6pm and Seven at 6.30pm by enough to win narrowly across the hour.

  • The Brisbane market saw a big drop in viewing with Seven down 55,000 while Nine lost 33,000. Seven won four nights to win its first (non-Olympic week) since February.

  • Adelaide numbers were down 17k for Seven and up 1,000 for Nine.

  • Over in Perth saw Nine steady while Seven was down 19,000 week-on week.

Seems like those strong performances late in the week were enough to get Nine over the line in Sydney.

And they can now officially say (after jumping the gun pre-Olympics) that they’re in an unbeatable ratings position for the year in the number of weeks won.

5 cities: Some very close results across the east coast for week 34. Ratings continue to track generally higher than this week last year as the multi-city lockdowns continue to impact viewer numbers. Compared to last week Seven was down 9,000 thanks to drops in all markets except Perth while Nine edged up 6,000.

  • In Sydney, Nine won at 6.00 and Seven won at 6.30pm with Nine ending just 900 ahead across the hour. Seven was up 32% from week 34 of 2020 while Nine was up 20%.

  • In Melbourne, a split decision as well with Nine ending up a winner this week across the hour.

  • The Brisbane Seven shed another 16,000 viewers but was still competitive with a win on one night and a tie on another.

  • In Adelaide Nine was up 9,000 this week but Seven still had an easy win.

  • Over in Perth Seven improved by 16,500 for another comprehensive win.

Mark Ferguson and the team at Seven should be very proud. Big improvements on where they were this time last year.

But of course with the current lockdowns, the Sydney ratings for all news services are probably up on this time last year?

That said, this week’s Sydney ratings were like something out of 2010…

I was more so referring to the fact that Seven in Sydney won the 6:30pm half hour this week, but yes, all bulletins tend to go up when a city is under lockdown.

Week 34 2020, Seven had won two weeks in Sydney at the 6pm half hour, and none at 6:30pm. Fast forward to Week 34 2021, Seven have won four weeks at the 6pm half hour, and three at 6:30pm.

5 cities: The east coast continued to deliver close results as news viewing generally fell in week 35. Seven did well to pick up wins in both Sydney and Brisbane. Seven was down an average of 14,000 and Nine lost 256,000 from week 34.

  • In Sydney, Seven picked up its fifth weekly win of the artings period helped by a better post 6.30pm performance than Nine. Seven won three nights to Nine’s two. Seven news is up 32% on week 35 of 2020 while Nine is up 17%.

  • In Melbourne, Nine picked up some extra viewers this week and won post half hours.

  • The Brisbane Seven won the week with wins on three out of five days. It was Seven’s sixth for the survey, though Nine has an unassailable lead having won 21 out of 40. Both bulletins were down - Nine by 19,000 and Seven by 7,000.

  • In Adelaide Nine was up 2,000 and Seven down 2,000 but Seven had an easy win.

Melbourne is dead even on weeks won between 7 and 9. Gotta give it to both newsrooms for this year’s performance.

I wonder what’s causing this sudden surge of dominance from Seven News Sydney? The market has been switched onto Nine for many years now, maybe Sydneysiders are making the switch to Mark Ferguson…

That’s a surprise… I thought it was going to be much closer than the final result was.
