Seven & Ten News (SCA)

Looks like the new sports guy is starting on 7Tas tonight, missed the full name but pretty sure it was Nick as the first name. They crossed to him for a preview for sport coming up later on and he said something like “join me later for the latest in news and sport” or something like that and Kim just said “I’ll take care of the news.”

Poor guy, must be tough with first night nerves but he should be ok once he gets into the swing of things.

EDIT: He’s up after the break. Nick Kelly is the name. If he’s a member here or if one of the members wants to pass along our welcome to the state.

Quite a nice newsroom backdrop.

:man_shrugging: Guess that’s him? Someone with metro experience (be they very experience or not) will hopefully make a difference.

It’s looking through a window into the news studio with the reflection of the control room for effect. You can see the far left of the set in red and blue and a couple of cameras between the set and talent.

Are the SCA ten updates still read from the tassie studio? Specifically the regional Victoria updates?

The Regional Victoria updates for SCA 10 are read from the Hobart studio

I believe all SCA news updates around the country all come out of Hobart. With the closure of SCA Canberra studios, I don’t think there are any other television facilities that can produce news updates.

When did the other states move from Canberra to Tassie?

Launceston does Queensland or at least that was the plan. Perhaps @DJPizarro can confirm.

Sort of

Of course the 7 Spencer Gulf news moved to TAS sometime before the Watson studio was demolished in 2020 (can’t recall exactly when it all shut down in Canberra but around then I believe). I believe that TDT news updates moved to TAS around the same time as that (I could be wrong on that one)

All the SNSW/RQLD/RVIC updates ended in Canberra when Nine took over news production for SCA (I think that was 2018, happy to be corrected). If I recall Nine produced those in Sydney and probably other major cities also

Since SCA switched their Nine-affiliated stations back to Ten, it’s always been in TAS

Not sure about other markets but the content of the Canberra noodle updates on 10 has been so much better since Will Boddy started producing/presenting them. The content is now much more relevant to Canberra and surrounds rather than the previous generic content with tenuous links to the local area. Overlay footage is almost always used now and is generally pretty relevant and the amount of poor pronunciations has reduced.

Generally a more engaging, relevant and professional product these days given the extremely limited resources. Today’s updates even included up to date commentary on local politics which is a big improvement from when the updates first launched.

Having a decent journo in the chair makes a big difference hey, especially with the one-man-band sort of set ups. I wonder where the overlay is coming from? Doubt they have someone out filming in Canberra.

Oh of course, completely forgot this even happened haha

It’s been bugging me for months, but does anyone else here get the terrible regional news updates inserted into their evening programming?

They’re hosted by work-experience children, with overlay which has almost nothing to do with what they’re talking about (anything involving police has a police car with lights flashing, and anything involving traffic has the same pictures of cars in unidentifiable locations).

I don’t know who makes them or made the decision to try to appeal to “local” markets, but if you’re not going to spend a few dollars to put the effort in, don’t bother.

don’t they have to do these in certain markets though?

Exactly.
