Doesn’t even happen with 9 Darwin in the Brisbane bulletin on weekends and they’re both O&O stations, would never happen with an affiliate on any network. The best you’d get is during ad breaks.
You really have no idea on the realities of Ten as a news operator or SCA as an affiliate of them.
They are
cheap
and
no
one
watches
them
The format of 10 News First bulletin does lend its self to SCA inserting content straight over a segment of the bulletin with zero effort or throw to required on 10s part, though. Irrelevant capital city headlines or capital city weather in the 6pm segment spring to mind as good options for local content. That would at least give regional audiences local news at a consistent, and arguably more relevant time of day, with zero revenue loss from using time in adbreaks.
It’s all well and good to suggest ideas on how SCA can improve their local news updates, but they really don’t care about the best time and way to do it under a 10 affiliation - they just want to dish it out and meet the bare minimum. We’re lucky that they are even using the actual 10 presentation for their updates and not something made using Powerpoint
It doesn’t happen due to budget or technical constraints but rather because not many people in Australian TV know how to think outside the box or innovate
Yea I get that. But what I’m suggesting doesn’t cost any many or resources. It’s just planing and logistics and communication between partners.
Somehow 700 affilaites manage to run local news updates live in GMA, Today and CBS the morning in the US - thrown to by the hosts. Rather than as News updates buried in daytime soaps. It doesn’t cost any party any
Lee money - it’s just communication between the parties.
Totally agree. In the end It’s better for both 10 and SCA and viewers.
- viewers get their local news during highly rated news broadcasts
- SCA is seen as more local and relevant as their news is higher profile
- Ratings may increase (over time) as people read Lise they can get their local stare and national news at 5 in one place
- increasd ratings and viewer retention benefits both SCA and 10
If you’re going to have the overheads of a staff of 10 + working 8 hour days plus crew to generate 60 odd local news updates a day - Working to schedule them at a time when more people see them and want them only makes sense. Return on investment
The resources required made this impossible, consider the budget that SCA must be working with. They dont have people on the ground to get local pictures for the updates so these inserts would just be more of the presenter staring at the camera. Not good.
Clearly I’m dreaming (not because Of budget or Techincal constraints, just lack of innovation at SCA or 10) but…
-
60 second updates airing 3 times in the 5pm, 530, 6 and 630, 7pm half hours
-
each update has 3 stories and a local weather hit
-
each update is thrown to by the 5pm and 6pm news anchor and airs over a 60 second traffic, fuel or weather section from the parent station
-
630pm and 7pm Air in the Project commercial breaks
-
integrated sponsorships are sold to monetize
-
promos and campaign run “now you can see the latest local Canberra News and weather during 10 News First at 5, 10 News First at 6 and The Project - right here on 10”
-
list the updates in TV listings
5.00 10 News First w/ Local News & Weather
Again. I know it will never happen. And I know why. They don’t have the expertise or knowledge to care.
But if I ran SCA and i was paying 15 people producing these things. I’d want as many eyeballs seeing them as possible
That’s what they are now. The resources or budget has no baring on where they are scheduled. They should be scheduled to an audience who has tuned in to see News.
Viewers are well trained to see an anchor on the screen for 30-60 seconds
Planning, logistics and more communication is literally more resources - diverts people away from their business as usual.
I actually agree with you. Seeing how well American stations can integrate between local and national news segments is great but you’re right our regional networks lack imagination to make that work. Surely Joe from Wagga Wagga doesn’t care about traffic in Bankstown.
But the other side is these updates aren’t great and should they be in peak viewing times? At least Prime7 attempt to add vision and sound bites (occasionally) into the updates to make them more visually appealing.
Regional affiliates are often mid sized cities where it’s worth it. Here, it’s Wagga and Bundaberg.
I just watched an update in Canberra with the subtitles turned on. The word laureate was followed by a three syllable pronunciation of it. It seems that the script had the pronunciation and they uploaded the script for the subtitles.
Hopefully they start doing this for suburb names so that Sophie stops saying “tugg-er-a-nong” and “bell-cuh-nen” for Tuggeranong and Belconnen here in Canberra.
It’s not that hard to pronounce Tuggeranong and Belconnen, even Kiama. I’m not blaming Sophie at all - she’s a great presenter - but the script/autocue needs improvement.
Please tell me this Sydneysider has it right by saying that “Tugg-ra-nong” (silent E) and “Bel-con-nen” is the correct pronunciation for these Canberra suburbs!
Correct!
That’s how GPS units like Navman used to pronounce it over ten years ago.
Pronounced ‘Don’t-go-there.’
