They could’ve done something really good with that, bit sad they didn’t broadcast it

A rarity… The appearance of a Nightly News 7 Spencer Gulf mic flag on ABC News NSW tonight, on a report from Lake Menindee.

Spencer Gulf … Menindee … how appropriate.

the station also covers Broken Hill in NSW. Which is odd, but it just is.

I don’t know if you’ve ever been to Broken Hill. But from the perspective of someone who has, it’s a wonder that it isn’t part of South Australia knowing just how closer the town (geographically, culturally, timezone wise and of course, media-wise to some extent) is to Adelaide than Sydney.

Down to history which stretches to the modern day. Broken Hill is located significantly closer to Adelaide than Sydney and when infrastructure connections were made they came from Adelaide and SA. The first rail connection was to Adelaide (1888), a Sydney connection came in 1927; Broken Hill was also the de facto rail border between SA and NSW. The rail connection also meant they adopted Adelaide time and an SA phone code (08) instead of 02 for NSW. When television eventually came, it came from SA.

Broken Hill’s closeness to Adelaide over Sydney continues to this day.

I mean the TV market is odd. Would make more sense for it to be Part of Central South.

Or maybe better still, being aligned with RTS instead of GTS.

I agree. I guess it’s just one of those anomalies where a NSW town gets more local and state SA news than all the towns actually in outback SA, despite the same broadcaster operating everywhere.

As a Broken Hill native, I confirm we see ourselves as honorary South Australians. It’s never bothered us about being in New South Wales, while having a predominately South Australian culture.

It’s just how it is.

Is 7 Nightly News 7 Spencer Gulf still on 7TWO or back on the main channel now?

I can’t see anything conclusive one way or the other online.

That’s not the point though. SA Politics means little to Broke Hill, as does local news for Port Lincoln.

They’ve still got ABC News NSW (albeit 6.30 local time) for NSW news.

I’m extremely familiar with Broken Hill - the town might as well be classified as South Australian - however, that is true and relevant to Adelaide, not the Spencer Gulf region / townships.

Don’t they have Adelaide news on one channel and Sydney news on the other? What’s the problem? They get the news they want to hear (local news and Adelaide’s) and the news they’ll need to hear from time to time (Sydney’s).

didn’t the Nine station there get their news from Sydney instead of Adelaide (the Seven GTS/BKN and Ten stations got their respective news from Adelaide) at one stage?

Yes, that was when SC Nine first went to air in Broken Hill/Spencer Gulf, and at the time, WIN owned NWS9 Adelaide, and they were unable to come to terms on a program supply agreement, so SC did a deal with Nine to take TCN9 Sydney programs instead (so yes, NRL in prime time on the main channel in country SA!).

Its my understanding that ABC NSW is in EST in Broken Hill, while the other 4 networks are in CST.
