Seven Sport

Firstly, Racing.com’s Victorian and South Australia rights are separate from the deal Seven announced today.

Secondly, what you’re suggesting might be the case (regarding 7Two). On the other hand though, Seven might decide to air it on the main channel if they don’t have other sports commitments because it’ll save them having to schedule other programming instead.

My point is Seven will be able to promote (particularly at their upcoming upfront) that they’ll have live sport every weekend of the year. That’s a pretty compelling proposition for both viewers and advertisers.

When is the new deal meant to start? Is it not until next year?

It’s show time for Spring Racing on Seven

Epsom Day and Turnbull Stakes Day live and free on Saturday

Flemington – Turnbull Stakes Day
Royal Randwick – Epsom Day
Saturday 12.00pm AEST on Channel 7, 7two and 7plus

Spring Racing kicks up a gear on the Seven Network this Saturday, with live and free coverage of the best thoroughbred action from Turnbull Stakes Day at Flemington and Epsom Day at Royal Randwick.

Saturday’s racing is highlighted by the $1.5 million Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m), Group 1 Metropolitan Handicap (2400m) and Group 1 Flight Stakes (1600m) at Royal Randwick, and the $1 million Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) at Flemington.

Seven’s coverage begins at 12.00pm AEST on Channel 7, 7two and 7plus and will be led by Australia’s pre-eminent sport broadcaster, Bruce McAvaney, with fan favourite Jason Richardson. Also joining racing’s #1 commentary team is Emma Freedman, daughter of five-time Melbourne Cup-winning trainer Lee Freedman.

Freedman will anchor Seven’s Sydney Spring Racing coverage, kicking off with Epsom Day on Saturday alongside Katelyn Mallyon, Gerard Middleton and Sky Racing’s Lizzie Jelfs trackside at Randwick.

The Turnbull Stakes is headlined by Sydney star Verry Elleegant, attempting to defend her Turnbull crown to take to her 10th Group 1. However, the champion mare is up against exciting galloper Incentivise while Cox Plate hero Sir Dragonet, who charged home behind Incentivise in the Makybe Diva Stakes, looks to be in for a very good preparation.

Star trainer Gai Waterhouse is looking for her eighth win in the Epsom Handicap with leading hope Riodini from a wide barrier and Discharged. Doncaster winner Cascadian is already proven at the Randwick Mile with placegetters Icebath and Dalasan chasing elusive Group 1 wins, while champion trainer Chris Waller has four of the past eight editions and saddles up five runners including last start Bill Ritchie winner Atishu and multiple Group 1 winner Hungry Heart.

In the Metropolitan Handicap, Group 1 winner Montefilia is looking to become the first mare since Coco Cobanna (2000) to win, while promising import Zeyrek gains a start and is ready to peak third up for Team Hawkes.

Seven this week announced the very best Australian thoroughbred racing will now be shown live and free every Saturday of the year as part of the most significant free-to-air television deal in the history of the sport.

The historic, long-term agreement to 2027 with Racing Victoria, Racing NSW, Racing Queensland and Racing SA firmly cements Seven as Australia’s Home of Racing, and means Australians will enjoy 52 weeks of elite racing across the nation.

Over the coming weeks, Seven will broadcast Spring Racing’s finest thoroughbred action from around Australia, including the Caulfield Cup, Everest, Cox Plate and Golden Eagle.

What does it say about her role/s?

Hopefully host and take over from Hamish

Likely just temporary as she’s still contracted to 7 & they need to get something for their $$ while still on contract I guess :man_shrugging:t3:

It wouldn’t be the right role for her. Guessing she’ll probably be a social reporter (ie; interviewing celebrities, Channel 7 personalities, etc) for the major Sydney meetings.

What a shame. I was hoping to never see or hear from her again. She’s useless.

Sounds about as pleasing as Mark Ferguson joining Big Brother as the host

I think that’s a bit uncalled for. She has had an incredibly successful career in Television - right to the end I might add (ratings wise). While not people cup of tea (mine included), useless is not a word I would use.

Surprisingly, this role suits her. I think the racing audience would feel a strong affinity with what they know about Sam.

Spring Racing’s richest day shines on Seven

The Everest and Caulfield Cup live and free on Saturday

One of Australian racing’s most glittering days takes centre stage on the Seven Network this Saturday, when our nation’s best thoroughbreds bid for glory on Everest Day at Royal Randwick and Caulfield Cup Day at Caulfield.

Two of the Spring Carnival’s most prestigious races headline Saturday’s live and free thoroughbred action, with star-studded fields set to contest the world’s richest race on turf, the $15 million Everest (1200m), at Randwick and the world’s richest 2400m handicap on turf, the $5 million Caulfield Cup, at Caulfield.

Seven’s coverage begins at 12.00pm AEDT Saturday on Channel 7, 7two and 7plus and will be led by Australia’s pre-eminent sport broadcaster Bruce McAvaney.

Racing’s #1 commentary team also includes Hamish McLachlan, Jason Richardson, Katelyn Mallyon, Emma Freedman and Gerard Middleton. Sky Racing’s Lizzie Jelfs will be trackside at Randwick, while Kate Waterhouse and Emma Vosti will bring fans all the fashion and colour of one of Spring Racing’s marquee days.

The world’s best sprinters will gather for The Everest at Randwick this Saturday, with last year’s winner Classique Legend bidding to go back-to-back while his jockey Kerrin McEvoy has his sights set on a remarkable fourth Everest victory. But Chris Waller stablemates Nature Strip and Home Affairs are also eyeing Australian racing’s richest prize, along with Eduardo, fresh off his impressive win in The Shorts, 2020 Everest placegetter Gytrash and Masked Crusader.

In the 144th running of the Caulfield Cup, Australia’s most exciting horse, Incentivise, is looking to continue his remarkable rise. The Peter Moody-trained gelding will be out to stretch his winning streak to seven with his third Group 1 title, but will have to overcome a strong field that includes Herbert Power winner Delphi, Nonconformist, who finished a narrow second in last week’s Caulfield Stakes, Young Werther and Duais.

Saturday’s other highlights at Caulfield include the Group 2 Caulfield Sprint (1100m) and Tristarc Stakes (1400m), and the Group 3 Neds Classic (2000m), Moonga Stakes (1400m) and Ethereal Stakes (2000m).

At Randwick, the $1.3 million Kosciuszko (1200m) is among the day’s other headline acts, along with the Group 3 Craven Plate (2000m) and Sydney Stakes (1200m), and the Listed Reginald Allen Quality (1400m).

The table Emma Freedman is hosting from is too tall for her. She looks ridiculous standing behind it. Like a midget.

The paper says Sam will appear at six marquee horseracing events in 2022, expected to include The Everest, the Golden Slipper, the Golden Eagle and the Caulfield Cup. Sources say Sam will shoot packages from the races to be incorporated into Seven’s race day coverage, but will not present or call races.

Spring Racing glory up for grabs on Seven

Cox Plate and The Invitation live and free this Saturday

Some of Australian racing’s most coveted prizes go on the line this Saturday, as the Spring Racing Carnival heats up on the Seven Network with Cox Plate Day at Moonee Valley and City Tattersalls Club Cup Day at Royal Randwick.

Australasia’s most prestigious weight-for-age race, the $5 million Group 1 W.S. Cox Plate (2040m), headlines the live and free racing at Moonee Valley on Saturday, when fans can look forward to what’s widely regarded as the best two minutes in sport.

At Randwick, the inaugural running of the $2 million The Invitation (1400m) will take centre stage as a marquee event for fillies and mares, alongside the $1 million Bondi Stakes (1600m) for three-year-olds.

Seven’s coverage begins at 12.00pm AEDT Saturday on Channel 7, 7two and 7plus and will be led by Australia’s pre-eminent sport broadcaster Bruce McAvaney.

Racing’s #1 commentary team will also include national racing icon Michelle Payne, who remains the only female jockey to have won the Melbourne Cup. She will be joined at Moonee Valley by Hamish McLachlan and Jason Richardson, while Emma Vosti will cover all the fashion and colour of one of Spring Racing’s grandest occasions.

At Randwick, Seven’s unrivalled line-up will feature Katelyn Mallyon, Emma Freedman, Gerard Middleton and Sky Racing’s Lizzie Jelfs.

The 101st running of the Cox Plate features the long-awaited clash between superstar thoroughbreds Zaaki and Verry Elleegant, who are both looking to bounce back from last-start defeats, with exciting Caulfield Guineas winner Anamoe also looming as a major danger in a race where three-year-olds have thrived.

This year’s field includes just one international runner, State of Rest, who is a last-start Group 1 winner in the United States, while import Gold Trip will be looking to give trainers Ciaron Maher and David Eustace back-to-back Cox Plate winners in his Australian debut.

A quality field will contest The Invitation, with New Zealand mare Entriviere shaping as the horse to beat following impressive Group wins on both sides of the Tasman. Group 1 winners Forbidden Love and Media Award will be out to spoil her plans, however, while Golden Pendant winner Vangelic and Doncaster Handicap runner-up Icebath should also be right in the mix.

The Bondi Stakes shapes as a battle between top colts Hilal and Coastwatch after their epic encounter in the Stan Fox Stakes, but Cotehele and Royalzel can’t be discounted in this race over the famous Randwick mile.

In the countdown to the Cox Plate, fans are in for a special treat with Aussie rock legend Daryl Braithwaite set to sing his smash hit The Horses at Moonee Valley.

Saturday’s other highlights at the Valley include the Group 2 Moonee Valley Fillies Classic (1600m), Crystal Mile (1600m), Moonee Valley Vase (2040m) and Moonee Valley Cup (2500m).
