I wonder if Seven will also cover the Winter Paralympic Games in 2022?

In some form you’d think. (Either 7+ only or on 7Mate/Two).

Did they cover the previous Winter Paralympics?

It did, but only as a daily highlights show hosted by Emma Vosti.
Seven’s current broadcast deal with the IOC expires with the Beijing Winter Olympics in 2022 so that’s why I posed the above question.

Will be on 7+ likely

They did but coverage was shocking!

Not sure if this is the right topic to post this, but with Beijing hosting the Winter Olympics in February next year, makes me wonder if Seven will do some sort of flashback to the 2008 Summer Olympics (which were also held in Beijing, and which Seven also televised) in the lead-up to this event.

I also remember in the lead-up to the 2004 Athens Olympics Opening Ceremony, Seven showed a full replay of the 2000 Sydney Olympics Opening Ceremony immediately beforehand.

George Main Stakes Day and MRC Foundation Race Day

Some of the nation’s biggest thoroughbred stars will be chasing Group 1 glory this Saturday on the Seven Network, with race fans set to enjoy spectacular Spring Racing from George Main Stakes Day at Randwick and MRC Foundation Race Day at Caulfield.

Saturday’s live and free action is highlighted by two coveted Group 1 races: the George Main Stakes (1600m) at Randwick and Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield.

Seven’s coverage begins at 12.00pm AEST on Channel 7, 7two and 7plus and will again be led by Australia’s most respected sport broadcaster, Bruce McAvaney. Racing’s #1 commentary team will also include national racing icon Michelle Payne, the only female jockey to have won the Melbourne Cup, along with fan favourites Jason Richardson and Katelyn Mallyon.

Saturday is the opening day of Sydney’s glittering Everest Carnival and the George Main Stakes – a race the legendary Winx won three years in a row – should ensure it gets off to a blistering start.

Eight-time Group 1 champion Verry Elleegant and last year’s winner Kolding will be out to give master trainer Chris Waller a remarkable eighth win in the illustrious weight-for-age race. However, George Ryder Stakes winner Think It Over and Doncaster Mile victor Cascadian are also proven Group 1 winners and will be extremely tough to beat.

At Caulfield, Probabeel will be striving to become the first mare to win the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes in more than a decade. But the triple Group 1 victor faces stiff opposition from last year’s winner Behemoth and Beau Rossa, who both impressed last start when finishing first and second in the Group 1 Memsie Stakes.

Saturday’s other highlights at Caulfield include two key lead-up races, the Group 2 Thousand Guineas Prelude (1400m), where short-priced favourite Heresy is stepping up to 1400m for the first time, and the Group 3 Caulfield Guineas Prelude (1400m).

The other must-see action at Randwick includes the Group 2 The Shorts (1100m), which features the country’s #1 sprinter Nature Strip, and Tea Rose Stakes (1400m).

Over the next three months, Seven will bring fans Spring Racing’s finest thoroughbred action from around Australia, including the Caulfield Cup, Everest, Cox Plate and Golden Eagle.

Seven has tied up the racing until 2027 it seems. 50 weeks of content from NSW, Vic, SA and Qld.

Only thing missing is the 4 day Melbourne Cup Carnival. That’s with 10 until end of 2023. I reckon that would go back to 7 when that expires as well.

That’s a lot of racing. I wonder what vast difference in the bids was? Money? Less comprehensive coverage on 10?

Regardless it’s good to see 10 attempting to acquire more sport

I wonder why Seven didn’t consider bidding for FTA rights to races from WA? Even if time difference is an issue, Big races like Perth Cup and Railway Stakes can be shown live on 7TWO or racing dot com.

I remember the days back in the early to mid 80’s when Channel 7 would cover the Australian Derby & Perth Cup. The late great Bill Collins would fly over to Perth and call the races.

Judging by the article, 10 went after the rights for key events only whereas Seven made a year-round proposal/commitment to showing horse racing every Saturday. That’s probably what gave them the edge to secure the rights.

The rights to thoroughbred race meets held in Perth are tied up with Sky Racing until next year.. As for thoroughbred racing conducted outside Perth, that comes under a separate deal which is currently in its final year with Sky.

Landmark deal secured for Australian racing

The Seven Network is proud to announce the very best Australian thoroughbred racing will now be shown live and free every Saturday of the year as part of the most significant free-to-air television deal in the history of the sport.

Seven has partnered with Racing Victoria, Racing NSW, Racing Queensland and Racing SA in the historic, long-term deal that unites Australian thoroughbred racing like never before.

The agreement to 2027 firmly cements Seven as Australia’s Home of Racing, and means Australians will enjoy 52 weeks of elite racing across the nation, including:

• NSW – every Group 1 and feature race, highlighted by the Golden Slipper, The Championships, The Everest and Golden Eagle
• Victoria – the very best of Melbourne’s time-honoured events headlined by the All-Star Mile, Caulfield Guineas, Caulfield Cup and Cox Plate
• Queensland – the Summer and Winter Carnivals, featuring the highly coveted Queensland Oaks, Queensland Derby and Stradbroke Handicap
• South Australia – the May Carnival and the jewels in its crown, the South Australian Derby, South Australian Oaks and Goodwood Handicap.

Seven West Media Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, James Warburton, said: “Seven has a long nd proud history of bringing horse racing to Australian television viewers and I’m very pleased to announce his innovative, comprehensive long-term agreement.

“It is great news for Seven, our partners, the fans and horse racing in general, and it reinforces our position s the home of the best sport on television, all live and free.”

Australia’s pre-eminent sports broadcaster Bruce McAvaney, who leads Seven’s racingcoverage, said: “It’s a landmark deal for racing in this country. To be able to share with all Australians the excitement and colour of the race track every week, on free-to-air television, is a dream come true.

“It feels unifying; the culmination of all within the sport pulling together to keep going despite the constant challenges of the pandemic.

“For 7SPORT, it continues a tradition that goes back five decades and more to the legendary Bill Collins, to the delights of Winx and her connections, and now opens up the chance to showcase to the widest possible audience the great moments to come.”

Managing Director Seven Melbourne and Head of Network Sport, Lewis Martin, said: “ This is a significant moment in Australian sport, bringing together the very best of Australian thoroughbred racing all year round on Seven.

“Horse racing is part of our nation’s sporting DNA and has provided some of the most iconic moments in our proud history.

“We thank all those involved in this agreement for their vision in enabling us to take this ground-breaking leap for Australian thoroughbred racing. The primary beneficiaries will be the fans, owners, participants and a celebration of the beautiful animal that underpins the sport of racing, the horse.”

Even though (outside of the Melbourne Cup Carnival and a few of the other major Spring races) it doesn’t pull massive numbers, this is a pretty big deal for Seven since it means they’ll have live sport every weekend of the year. That consistency not only means they can start to develop viewer habits but it’s something they can tie with their other sports to promote.

I’m imaging with every racing every weekend, Seven will be able to squeeze in the occasional betting app ad too

Surely aside from the big races, most of this coverage is likely to be seen on 7TWO and RACING.COM?
