Today’s Golden Slipper meeting at Rosehill was called off due to heavy rain in Sydney in the past couple of days. It will be held next Saturday with the rest of the autumn carnival pushed back by seven days.

UPDATE: as the result Seven is broadcasting races from Goulburn and Eagle Farm, in addition to today’s Mornington Cup meeting, to fill the schedule.

Golden Slipper to shine again on Seven

Autumn Racing Carnival heats up this Saturday

Rosehill Gardens – Golden Slipper Day Bendigo – Golden Mile Race Day
Saturday 12.00pm AEDT on Channel 7, 7two and 7plus

The world’s richest race for two-year-olds, the $3.5 million Golden Slipper Stakes, will get Sydney’s Autumn Racing Carnival restarted in style on a huge day of live and free racing on the Seven Network this Saturday, including five Group 1 races at Rosehill Gardens and Golden Mile Race Day at Bendigo.

Extreme rain last week forced Golden Slipper Day to be rescheduled to this Saturday, when fans can catch all the action from Rosehill and Bendigo at 12.00pm AEDT on Channel 7, 7two and 7plus.

Australia’s pre-eminent sports broadcaster Bruce McAvaney will again lead racing’s undisputed #1 commentary team on Saturday, and will be joined by master trainer Lee Freedman, whose remarkable career achievements include four Golden Slipper victories.

Katelyn Mallyon, Michelle Payne, Jason Richardson and Sky Racing’s Lizzie Jelfs will also be part of Seven’s broadcast, while Kate Waterhouse will bring fans all the colour, fashion and celebrity interviews from Rosehill.

The Golden Slipper Stakes (Group 1, 1200m) is Sydney’s most prestigious race and one of Australian racing’s four “majors”. This year’s edition remains one of the most wide-open in memory, as Gai Waterhouse chases a record eighth victory with Swift Witness, the filly she co-trains with Adrian Bott.

Mick Price and Michael Kent junior-trained colt Profiteer is favourite for the second week running, but a host of challengers are standing in his way led by Stay Inside, Blue Diamond winner Artorius, Magic Millions 2YO Classic winner Shaquero, Godolphin stablemates Anamoe and Ingratiating, and the field’s only undefeated horse, Four Moves Ahead.

On a momentous day at Rosehill, every event is a stakes race, including Saturday’s other Group 1 races: the George Ryder Stakes (1500m), Rosehill Guineas (2000m), Ranvet Stakes (2000m) and The Galaxy (1100m).

In the Ranvet Stakes, all eyes will be on star mare Verry Elleegant and Irish raider Addeybbafter their epic clash in last year’s edition of the race. But the budding rivals won’t have things all their own way after Group 1 winners Sir Dragonet, Colette and Miami Bound this week joined the field.

Star of the Seas and Mizzy have also bolstered the field in the George Ryder Stakes as new acceptors. After runner-up finishes in the Canterbury Stakes and Coolmore Classic, Mizzy is seeking her first Group 1 win, but to do so will have to overcome seasoned Godolphin gelding Avilius and Chris Waller stablemates Funstar and Kolding.

At Bendigo, Will Clarken-trained gelding Ironclad will be chasing his fourth consecutive win when he lines up in the Listed Golden Mile (1600m), but he faces stiff opposition from Ajax Stakes place-getter Rock.

Other horses to look out for include Queensland favourite The Candy Man and one-time English Derby favourite English King, who are respectively making their Victorian and Australian debuts, while Rostropovich makes his long-awaited racetrack return.

Saturday’s other headline act is the Listed Bendigo Guineas (1400m), where Mick Price and Michael Kent junior stablemates Annavisto and Redeel are among the top fancies, along with Military Parade and Conceited.

Over the next month, fans will enjoy the very best racing from the Sydney and Melbourne Autumn Carnivals live and free on Seven, including The Championships at Randwick on 10 and 17 April, which features eight Group 1 races across two action-packed Saturdays.

As most of us have been aware for the past few weeks, it doesn’t seem the elongated 7SPORT logo is being used anymore, in favour of using the new Network typeface instead:

what was the point of the sold logo then?

Perhaps a change of creative direction at the Network compared to last year?

The elongated font during the Network-wide refresh had appeared on the multi-channels, News, and there was also a briefly leaked new-look Sunrise logo that was also sporting a similar font but disappeared and appears to have been potentially scrapped.

So perhaps they have decided to instead use the Corporate typeface instead for certain brands. A bit surprising so soon since changing a Department’s logo and its associated stationary costs, so seems wasteful for it to change again so soon.

Randwick – The Championships Day 2

Caulfield – Victorian Owners and Breeders Race Day

Saturday 12.00pm AEST on Channel 7, 7two and 7plus

Queen Elizabeth showdown headlines one of Autumn Racing’s biggest days on Seven

Local superstar Verry Elleegant and English champion Addeybb take centre stage this Saturday on the Seven Network when they clash in the coveted Queen Elizabeth Stakes, on a massive day of Autumn Racing that includes The Star Championships Day 2 at Randwick and Victorian Owners and Breeders Race Day at Caulfield.

The $4 million Queen Elizabeth Stakes looms as the highlight of The Championships’ final day, and is one of four Group 1 races at Randwick on Saturday, alongside the $2 million Sydney Cup, and the $1 million Australian Oaks and Queen of the Turf Stakes.

At Caulfield, the best Victorian-bred horses will race for more than $2.5 million in prizemoney, when the headline act is the $1 million Showdown for two-year-olds.

On one of the Autumn Racing Carnival’s most iconic days, Seven will have all the big moments at Randwick and Caulfield covered from 12.00pm AEST Saturday on Channel 7, 7two and 7plus.

Australia’s pre-eminent sports broadcaster Bruce McAvaney will again lead racing’s best commentary team on Saturday. He will be joined by Katelyn Mallyon, Michelle Payne, Jason Richardson and Sky Racing’s Lizzie Jelfs. Kate Waterhouse will bring fans all the colour, fashion and celebrity interviews from Randwick.

The rivalry between Verry Elleegant and Addeybb has quickly become one of the most compelling in thoroughbred racing. In the past two Ranvet Stakes, the pair have waged titantic battles, with Addeybb taking the spoils in 2020 and Verry Elleegant reversing that result this year.

Addeybb is bidding for back-to-back Queen Elizabeth victories on Saturday, but Verry Elleegant is expected to start favourite in the 2000m feature, while Tancred Stakes winner Sir Dragonet and All Star Mile victor Mugatoo cannot be discounted.

In the Australian Oaks (2400m), star Kiwi filly Amarelinha will attempt to complete the New Zealand Oaks-Australian Oaks double, while Hungry Heart is bidding to emulate stablemate Verry Elleegant’s 2019 Vinery Stud Stakes-Australian Oaks double.

The clash between ultra-consistent mare Realm of Flowers and William Haggas-trained gelding Favorite Moon looms as the highlight of the Sydney Cup (3200m), while New Zealand mare Probabeel is chasing her fourth Australian Group 1 victory in the Queen of the Turf Stakes (1600m), where 2020 Australian Oaks winner Colette and rising star Nimalee are among her main challengers.

At Caulfield, unbeaten colt Starry Legend looms as the two-year-old to beat in The Showdown (1200m), but he will have to overcome impressive Godolphin filly Arcaded and Finance Tycoon, who finished a gallant fourth in the Blue Diamond Stakes.

At Randwick, Saturday’s action will be headlined by the final two Group 1 races of the Sydney Autumn arnival – the All Aged Stakes (1400m) and Champagne Stakes (1600m).

In the All Aged Stakes, William Reid Stakes winner Masked Crusader looms as the horse to beat, but he will have to overcome two last-start Group 1 winners from the Godolphin stable, Cascadian (Doncaster Mile) and Savatiano (Canterbury Stakes), along with 2020 Blue Diamond Stakes winner Tagaloa.

On a big day of racing at Caulfield, the feature is the Listed Anniversary Vase (1400m), where Summoned Stakes winner Missile Mantra and popular Tasmanian filly Still a Star are among the leading fancies, along with Groundswell and Riddle Me That.

A week before the official start of the Adelaide Autumn Racing Carnival, there will be plenty of high-quality action at Morphettville, which on Saturday hosts four stakes races including the Group 3 SA Breeders Stakes, and the Listed HC Nitschke Stakes and City of Adelaide Handicap.

According to the Nine Newspapers, Seven have apparently shown interest in acquiring the rights for Socceroos and Matildas matches (which are being sold separately from the A-League/W-League rights) as well as the 2023 Women’s World Cup.

However, what’s complicating discussions over the former is the current uncertainty around international travel and whether home matches might have to be played in another country due to Australia’s hotel quarantine program

Surprising they’re not going for the A-League rights especially the criticism they got from the fans when they last attempted to show football.

Doomben Cup headlines Saturday’s live and free racing

Queensland’s premier weight-for-age staying contest, the Group 1 Doomben Cup, highlights an action-packed day of thoroughbred racing on the Seven Network this Saturday, which will also feature all the big moments from Rosehill Gardens and Flemington.

The Doomben Cup (2000m) is one of the most prestigious races of the Brisbane Winter Carnival and this year’s edition shapes as a wide-open affair after attracting an outstanding field that includes seven Group 1 winners.

In the Doomben Cup, Zaaki is expected to start favourite after his impressive last-start win in the A.D. Hollindale Stakes. However, the Annabel Neasham-trained gelding will have to overcome a star-studded field headlined by Cox Plate winner Sir Dragonet and All Star Mile victor Mugatoo, while champion New Zealand mare Melody Belle can’t be discounted in her final race as she strives to add to her remarkable tally of 14 Group 1 wins.
