Seven Sport

Supercars needed the money Foxtel offered under the current deal because (IIRC) Seven underpaying in the previous deal put the sport in a precarious financial state. The big problem was the FTA component was badly constructed and significantly limited/reduced the sport’s exposure to causal viewers

Thumps up to Seven getting FTA Supercar rights back. :+1:

If memory serves me correctly, 10 on-sold much of its exclusive rights to Fox when it was coming under the influence of the Murdochs, right?

they did? I thought 10 only got to choose what was available to them at that point in time. In the end it was 6 events.

Moonee Valley Racing Club CEO Michael Browell mentioned that we should know this week on who the free-to-air broadcaster for the lead up events to the Melbourne Cup Carnival with Channel 10 still in the running for the broadcast rights.

This years’ Cox Plate will be a made-for-television event.

Would be surprised if 10 gets those rights considering their (apparent) retreat from broadcasting sport.

We found out it was Seven which retained the rights to the events including the Cox Plate.
I am not sure if a night race will rate well against movies on Nine or drama on the ABC though.

Surely this means that there will be updated broadcast graphics for Seven sport including cricket, 2021 footy season, and whatever else they’ve got, horse racing?

Looking at their other new graphics, I don’t want to think about it. But yes, probably so.

With Tim Gossage gone at 10, I hope Channel Seven pick him up! He is far too good not to be on any of the major networks!

Spring Racing Carnival

All the premium racing from Melbourne and Sydney – LIVE & FREE on 7, 7TWO & 7plus

One of sport’s most iconic events kicks off on Saturday when the Spring Racing Carnival explodes from the starting gates LIVE and FREE on Seven with Memsie Stakes Day at Caulfield and San Domenico Stakes Day at Rosehill Gardens.

Over the next three months, fans will enjoy the most celebrated meetings on the Australian thoroughbred racing calendar and a procession of Group 1 races. From the glorious tradition of the Caulfield Guineas, Caulfield Cup and Cox Plate to the unmistakable electricity that now surrounds the Golden Eagle, Everest and Epsom Handicap, Seven is the only place to catch all the premium spring action – in both Melbourne and Sydney – LIVE and FREE.

It all begins on Saturday at 12.00pm AEST on 7, 7TWO and 7plus, when Caulfield hosts the first Group 1 race of the Melbourne Spring Carnival, the $750,000 Magic Millions Memsie Stakes (1400m), and the TAB San Domenico Stakes (Group 3, 1100m) headlines a big day at Rosehill.

Seven has long been the undisputed leader in racing broadcasting and continues that rich tradition in 2020.

Australia’s pre-eminent broadcaster Bruce McAvaney will again lead racing’s best commentary team, which on Saturday features Hamish McLachlan , Katelyn Mallyon and prominent Victorian trainer Henry Dwyer . Jason Richardson and Sky Racing’s Lizzie Jelfs will also be trackside at Caulfield and Rosehill respectively, bringing fans all the news and interviews.

McAvaney said this year’s Spring Carnival could see some all-time greats emerge:

“This year, the race that defines a champion will have its 100th running. But it will be a Cox Plate like we’ve never seen before. And the great Caulfield Cup will have a COVID twist – with no Japanese horses and fewer European raiders, giving the locals a big chance.

“In Sydney, the Everest provides the platform for the outrageously talented Nature Strip to race his way into the Hall of Fame. The Golden Eagle is no less than the Grand Final for four-year-olds. And what about the three-year-olds? I doubt we’ve ever seen so much depth at the start of spring, so many potential stallions.

“But we all have our favourite question at this time of year. And mine is about a colt who was bred to race in Europe but has already made a mark here. By the end of the spring, we will find out whether Russian Camelot is good – or great.”

Managing Director Seven Melbourne and Head of Network Sport Lewis Martin added:

“The Spring Racing Carnival is one of the great events on the international sporting calendar. And there’s no doubt its standing has grown in recent years as the time-honoured tradition of the Caulfield Guineas, Caulfield Cup and Cox Plate has been complemented by the irresistible new buzz around the Golden Eagle and Everest. It will be a non-stop parade of Australia’s most prestigious races on Seven – and racing fans won’t want to be anywhere else.”

On Saturday, Savatiano , Arcadia Queen, Behemoth, Mystic Journey and Regal Power are among a host of contenders expected to fight out the Memsie Stakes, while there’s plenty more to look forward to at Caulfield including the Group 3 H.D.F. McNeil Stakes (1200m), The Heath 1100 Stakes (1100m) and Cockram Stakes (1200m).

At Rosehill, the San Domenico Stakes looks set to be a hotly contested affair between Anders , Peltzer , Mamaragan and Doubtland , while the day’s other highlights include the Group 3 Ming Dynasty Quality Handicap (1400m) and Premier’s Cup (1900m).

Channel Seven, which holds the free-to-air broadcast rights to both football and racing, will play a major role in setting the starting times of both features, but Browell will get his wish of holding a Cox Plate close to its traditional 5pm time slot – most likely at 4.15pm.

Spring Racing

Cox Plate spot up for grabs as Spring Racing hots up on Seven

Saturday 12.00pm AEST – 7, 7TWO & 7plus

A coveted place in Australasia’s weight-for-age championship is on the line this Saturday at Moonee Valley’s Cox Plate Qualifier Day, while the LIVE and FREE Spring Racing on Seven also includes an action-packed day at Randwick headlined by the Chelmsford Stakes.

With the winner of the John F. Feehan Stakes (Group 2, 1600m) exempt from the ballot for the Cox Plate on October 24, a strong field will gather at Moonee Valley on Saturday to chase a start in one of sport’s greatest events.

Star stayer Surprise Baby is expected to be right in the mix, but will face stiff opposition from Harbour Views , Sircconi and Mahamedeis , who is chasing a hat-trick of wins, while multiple Group 1 winner Humidor can’t be discounted as he prepares to debut for the Chris Waller stable.

At Randwick, the Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes (1600m) shapes as a wide-open contest after attracting a capacity field of 16.

Godolphin gelding Avilius and Hawkes Racing stablemates Angel of Truth and Zebrowski are the top fancies, but master trainer Chris Waller has a very strong hand with nine runners headed by Mister Sea Wolf , Shared Ambition and Finche .

Australia’s pre-eminent broadcaster Bruce McAvaney will again lead racing’s best commentary team, which on Saturday features Hamish McLachlan , Katelyn Mallyon and prominent Victorian trainer Henry Dwyer . Jason Richardson and Sky Racing’s Lizzie Jelfs will also be trackside at Moonee Valley and Randwick respectively, bringing fans all the news and interviews.

Saturday’s other highlights include a trio of prestigious Group 2 races: the McEwen Stakes (1000m) at Moonee Valley, and the Furious Stakes (1200m) and Tramway Stakes (1400m) at Randwick.
