Melbourne playout shut down 5 years ago.
Given the number of playout errors we see in regional television - this isn’t a particularly uncommon occurrence. That said, we’ve seen ads since at least the 90s for the mid north coast on Prime inland.
Dont give SCA ideas where to send their next Hub…
You would think that the multichannels would focus more on national advertisers instead of having NSW South Coast or Riverina NSW ads playing in the Hunter Valley NSW. Some of these advertisements rarely make sense when they play outside their home base
It all comes down to what the client has paid for.
If they’ve paid for their ad to run across the state, then the regional networks will run their ad across the state.
Often it will be bonus spots for clients who advertise on the main channel (or main channel and local multi-channels).
Sky News Regional is the worst offender here - from memory it’s the one feed for VIC, SNSW and QLD.
It’s probably the same one as WIN TEN (Nthn NSW)
Never mind, there are state-based feeds for Sky - but there are quite a few ad sells across all three (four with NNSW) aggregated markets.
I believe historical you may have been able to buy ads in multiple sub regions in NSW I remember during the 90s that when watching commercial TV in Canberra you would see advertised ads for resorts on the south Coast of NSW where that would make sense but not in Newcastle or even Western NSW I would say that would still be a thing now. It’s money at the end of the day for the commercial TV stations. For example I remember this Jingle played on Camberra TV during the 90s. Redirecting...
It also was strange to see ads for the Qantas Founders Museum in Longreach when on Norfolk Island when watching Seven Central but that is a very different circumstances.
Sometimes these could be free spots given to advertisers for loyalty, but you would think a little common sense would prevail.
I think advertisers on 7 Regional QLD get free ad spots during the overnight period. From 12:00AM until 06:00AM. Here’s an ad break from 7 Townsville as an example. It’s flooded with local ads.
Seven Sunshine Coast is pumping ads for Drakes supermarkets. The nearest is Gympie but the ad doesn’t mention locations. Even the news updates are bought to you by Drakes. Anyone seen this in other markets?
Seven in Toowoomba and Wide Bay are also airing the Drakes Supermarkets ads. And all areas of Regional QLD pump out weather updates sponsored by Drakes Supermarkets, including in areas where a Drakes supermarket isn’t operating.
And as to why there’s no locations present for the Drakes supermarkets? Because Drakes also operates in Adelaide, in fact they started business in SA.
But I reckon they should disclose the addresses for the locations of their nearest Drakes supermarket in the ads targeted towards Regional QLD viewers, but only in areas where Drakes does have a presence. And maybe stop having Drakes as the sponsor for the weather updates in areas where there’s no Drakes presence. Currently, these markets don’t have a Drakes, yet Seven’s weather updates still has Drakes as the sponsor for these updates.
Entirely irrelevant to viewers of Seven’s Toowoomba bulletin.
Evidently, there’s a statewide package that Drakes have bought. They would be aware which markets its brand is being aired into - it may be cost-effective to take the partnership even if your message is being broadcast into a number of markets where it is irrelevant.
In some aspects you are right in saying maybe they shouldn’t, but they do.
I remember back in before Wesfarmers took over BBC Hardware and rebranded it Bunnings, Wesfarmers sponsored different programs and segments of shows, despite being a Western Australian company.
Perhaps Drakes Supermarkets are using these sponsored segments for promotional purposes to ensure people know the name and if there is a plan to increase locations, trying to build a positive brand image to ensure success.
According to the Drakes store locator, there is one at Caboolture too
this is just silly - why is any broadcaster going to turn down money from an advertiser.
I agree, it is common practice to see advertisements from out of the region they operate. This is especially prevalent on multi channels, but if you look at 30 years ago, you would often see metro advertising in regional markets overnight.
Given Drakes operate in SA and QLD it’s a good marketing strategy even if there are no Drakes supermarkets in some areas.
Good for JP Drake to drum up recognition for his own social brand. He is quite entertaining on Instagram with his Customer Magic segments.
Fast forward to 2024 and it’s the exact opposite. It’s local ads all the way, complete with some Community Service Announcements.
Recently, I’ve seen lots of ads for out-of-region concerts on the Canberra feed. One of the better examples were two versions of an ABBALANCHE concert promo, one for Queanbeyan and another for Goulburn (I think I saw the Goulburn version more frequently). Both areas get the Canberra feed so it would make sense to air them. I’ve also seen ads for the upcoming Ute Muster festival in Deniliquin (headlined by Amy Shark), but I don’t think Deniliquin is in the Canberra broadcast area, therefore the ad would make no sense to Canberra viewers.
