The Victorian Labor party is probably the worst in terms of being selective with what media they interact with. Andrews didn’t speak to many in the end, you upset his team, they cut you off. Many radio presenters he refused to speak to, he cut off doing any live interviews with the ABC and Sky News. Then Leigh Sales rocked up at one of his pressers to conduct the interview lol.
Jacinta is on the nose in Victoria so no doubt will be very careful with her movements and comments that are being put out, so the nice non pushy journalists are only sent.
Lol, just as I wrote about this tonight, this appeared in The Australian about half an hour ago.
Insiders told Diary that Maddern is in preliminary discussions with Seven about taking over from Watson once he departs, which would make perfect sense given her longstanding sporting expertise… Amor and weeknight newsreader Peter Mitchell both have some time to run on their contracts and won’t be going anywhere soon
Also…
And another journo to watch out for is Seven’s US bureau chief, David Woiwod, who is based in LA. Diary has been told he is a “favourite” among the bosses at the network and deemed a potential newsreader down the track.
He could potentially take the same path as Amor, who returned to Melbourne in mid-2018 after nearly two decades in the United States (albeit Woiwod has only been Stateside for four years).
I also know DW used to be Ten’s state political reporter in the early teens.
Also, does anyone know if Hugh Whitfeld is now back in Australia?
He replaced Gareth Boreham after 2011, who was ATV-10’s State Political Reporter for more than 10 years. Believe he ended up at SBS for some years.
This same year ATV also lost Christopher Still, long-time Court Reporter.
I remember the night in 2013 David Woiwod was live on-air with a late night update on 10 breaking the news of Ted Bailieu’s stepping down.
I think a possibility is that after the AFL Grand Final, Tim Watson will only present sport from Monday to Wednesday to fit in with his radio schedule, with Maddern on Thursday and Friday nights. Then from January next year, Maddern will present sport on all five weeknights.
Wonder if Seven would use any Nine footage of Bec in marketing campaign/promos?
As her sport roles were predominantly at the latter (Footy Show, WWOS namely tennis including AO and cricket).
She did move into a little bit of sport in her later years of her first era at Seven, such as AFL GF Parade and day, Brownlow red carpet, Melbourne Cup carnival, around the tennis courts at Melbourne Park and AFL Footy Central filling-in for Basil Zempilas on Saturday nights a few times.
Her natural knowledge and love of Aussie footy, including being Geelong’s long-time No. 1 ticket holder, helps.
Yes but what I think @JohnsonTV means is that Tim can read sport the night before a breakfast shift on SEN.
Monday night Seven sport into Tuesday morning SEN
Tuesday night Seven sport into Wednesday morning SEN
Wednesday night Seven sport into Thursday morning SEN
Yeah, like literally 3 times. Doesn’t exactly scream sport CV, like her actual Nine contract. If Seven wanted to showcase/highlight those, could be carefully edited as to not shine a light on Nine branding.
Or they could just quietly move Bec to the weeknight slot - it’s not like Mitch is the one leaving. Obviously still have a farewell package for Watson, but it’s not like she is unknown to the audience.
If anything, I would be focusing marketing on Karina since she would be more unknown than Bec (if she ends up on weekends).
I’d be interested to know if Watson will leave the network as a whole or just Seven News.
Either way, he’s been with both news and Seven Sport for decades, first while still playing as an Essendon legend over 30 years ago, still a coup, one of the company’s longest and loyal stars. I’d be surprised if they couldn’t find a way to keep him for 7AFL for marquee games or one of the number of football shows upcoming.
However whether he just leaves news or goes fully, he deserves a significant farewell package and all-in applause in his last on-air moment, if not the week’s lead-up. He is synonymous with HSV-7.
