Seven News Presenters and Reporters

Isn’t Seven pretty much set on Ange? Or have I got the wrong story here? I thought that’s why she’s been solo on weeknights all week and that other article saying she’s the face of Seven News?

The problem is the 5pm lead-in…NOT Peter Mitchell.

Viewers do not like change. Mitch, Tim and Jane have been and still are a great combination and all very much talented.

Dump Mitch for Mike & Karina/Bec and you risk losing a large percentage of viewers who are rusted onto Peter.

A great get?

Agree to disagree - she was one of the worst presenters on abc news - wooden and boring.

I am very perplexed by this move.

That’s your opinion.

Yet they all flocked to Alicia and Tom?

And Tom especially not having been “local” to Melbourne screens for many years.

Or, did they all flock to Tipping Point, and consequentially leave the television on Nine for 6pm?

The same could be said for when Seven launched The Chase Australia in September 2015, in the sense that it helped to boost their struggling 6:00pm news bulletins which had fallen well behind Nine’s in the immediate years beforehand.

But while it continues to trail Nine News on the east coast, what it did was reduce the deficit it faced in the key markets of Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, and only increase its lead in Adelaide and Perth.

But now it’s fair to say that The Chase could be pushed over the tipping point soon… (pun intended)

Evidence suggests that Seven’s downhill slide started late last year, and that was before Alicia and Tom and also Tipping Point AU didn’t exist. Something must’ve happened late last year after the AFL for Seven to drop so dramatically.

Funnily enough when Seven axed all their Melbourne based shows (including AFL ones) ratings held up, but when they announced their return this year in the upfronts (or equivalent), ratings started falling away. It’s almost as if there’s been an effect of viewers being repelled by Seven when they tried to ‘reconnect’ (for a lack of better term) with the local audience after them stick with Seven even when they axed their shows.

Maybe Mitch and Bec weeknights and Mike and Karina on weekends?

Then if Mitch goes/retires, they can reunite Bec and Mike and it is an easy transition.

Seven welcomes Karina Carvalho

Distinguished journalist joins 7NEWS Melbourne

The Seven Network today announced Karina Carvalho is joining 7NEWS, Australia’s #1 news service.

The seasoned journalist will call Seven’s Melbourne newsroom home, in a dynamic role both presenting and reporting from the field.

With over 20 years’ experience in broadcast journalism, the past 17 of those with the ABC, Carvalho brings a wealth of knowledge and passion for delivering impactful news to local communities that will further strengthen the award-winning 7NEWS Melbourne team, led by Peter Mitchell.

Carvalho said: “I am delighted to be joining the first-class 7NEWS team in Melbourne and looking forward to making a valuable contribution to the ongoing success of the network.

“Melbourne is and always has been the nation’s most engaged audience for news and sport, so to be a part of the Seven newsroom here is an honour.”

Seven Melbourne Director of News, Chris Salter said: “Karina brings wisdom, credibility and a style of storytelling that we know 7NEWS viewers will embrace.

“She’s energetic and passionate, and we’re thrilled to have her joining the Melbourne team.”

Seven Network Director of News and Current Affairs and Seven West Media Editor-in-Chief, Anthony De Ceglie, said: “We are extremely excited to welcome Karina to the 7NEWS family.

“Her experience and expertise speak for themselves, as does the leadership qualities she will bring not just to our Melbourne newsroom but across the country.”

Born in Sri Lanka and raised in Western Australia, Carvalho was profoundly shaped by her family’s experience of the Colombo riots in 1983.

She has held prominent roles over the last two decades at the BBC and ABC, notably co-hosting ABC News Breakfast in Melbourne alongside Michael Rowland, and presenting ABC Queensland’s 7pm News and ABC News Channel’s Evenings and Mornings programs.

No stranger to the daily adrenalin of live television, Carvalho has anchored rolling coverage of many significant events such as terrorist attacks, flood emergencies and bushfires, including Black Summer in 2019-20. Most recently, she hosted the ABC’s rolling coverage of the Queen’s death and King Charles’s accession to the throne.

Passionate about telling stories of ordinary people and a keen supporter of sports and the arts, Carvalho is also a Multicultural Ambassador for Cricket Australia and a member of the National Film and Sound Archive board.

Carvalho begins her role tomorrow. She’ll present Seven Melbourne’s Afternoon News at 4.00pm from Monday, 5 August and will co-present weekend editions of Melbourne’s 7NEWS alongside Mike Amor from Saturday, 10 August for a month while Rebecca Maddern is on planned leave.

Out of all the perplexing decisions made by Seven in the last six months, getting rid of Burty takes the cake for me. Just a normal, likeable guy who has a bit of a laugh and connects with viewers.

What a weird location for a shot!

Seven also provided a photo of Karina standing on Collins Street.

Sounds like she is doing what Samantha Heathwood did when she first moved to Seven - doing reporting duties, and filling in on bulletins when needed.

I reckon we will see her in a double header soon….

Who, Sam? With Max on weeknights?

Agree. Peter Mitchell is not the issue.

The lead-in has played the largest part but Sevens very Sydney centric programming line up (post Covid) has played a part in the Melbourne market.

Unfortunately, all the new changes being implemented to the news brand will only push viewers further away.

I think it’s safe to say that The Chace has now run it’s course and Seven need to start thinking a new lead in come 2025.

I reckon they will change up Melbourne weeknights. Whether that is with Peter Mitchell or another.

They could have announced this to have her on the books whilst waiting for someone else’s contract to lapse….

You could be right. Waiting for Bec’s leave to be over and then announce changes when she gets back?

The resurgent of 9 started in late Oct & early Nov just around the time they announced that Hitch was moving to weekends.
