Hopefully Bec doesn’t have any hairdressing appointments booked while she’s out of office.

If Karina really is going to be in addition to the existing presenter line up, then it’s Blake Johnson who has lost the main fill in role.

It’s certainly needed. A surprising addition, and you have to suspect that they have bigger plans for her.

Crazy idea but when Mitch goes: Mike and Bec on weeknights and Blake and Karina on the weekends?

Given what Chris Salter did in Adelaide with Will Goodings, maybe Mike and Karina weeknights with Bec on weekends next year.

Something doesn’t add up here.

There is something more going on.

Do go on…

Surely the only way that’s even reasonable is Mike and Bec on weeknights and Karina on weekends.

Either way, Peter Mitchell’s had his time and probably should go. Going from a comprehensive victory to a comprehensive defeat within a year is just astonishing particularly given that Seven didn’t even have much programming last year and were still doing well and then it just all collapsed in a heap this year.

Maybe Ann Sanders gone (an insider said expected to be her final year), Morning News from Melbourne, with any one of a number of presenters and would then shuffle the others? One thought :man_shrugging:

IMO Docklands has an equal if not higher amount of network talent ATM, perhaps unintentionally just as things have worked out including under different CEOs now Worner > Warburton > Martin > ? / Howard / Pristell > Menegola > Salter, known nationally and been around for decades including to Sydney viewers… Mike Amor, Rebecca Maddern and now Karina Karvelho. Maybe HQ wants to utilise more/extract contract value, why not. Limiting to one market vs all.

Peter Mitchell is still delivering Seven’s highest rated bulletin and the 2nd highest rated bulletin in Australia, outrating Nine’s Sydney bulletin.

Very fair point. I’ve been noticing that too, consistently still well over 200k. And did dominate the last two years in impressive turn-around style (and very nearly or some would argue also 2019). And didn’t a tabloid report he’s still got “several years” to run on his contract, meaning a recent re-signing and would be a bad look and very expensive ditching him.

Brisbane also probably shares a budget for the Gold Coast bulletin, so they have an extra newsroom than Melbourne to look after.

Chris Salter did say in an interview with InDaily that he is a big fan of double headers, and his pairing of WIll and Rosanna did lead to an increase in ratings, however, will probably be Mike and Bec on weeknights, especially since both would be on a higher salary than Karina, but also not as expensive as Peter (if he is replaced):

Which is odd as he is quite terrible.

@TV.Cynic, would I be correct in saying that Melbourne probably rates higher because there are more people watching due to them having a higher population?

Shuffling Mike Smithson to co-anchor weekends, then moving him off weekends to daytime and then back to weekends and putting Will Goodings in the prime seat seemed (seems) bizzare too.

I agree Bec should be on weeknights. But look at Sydney- Seven seems interested in shaking things up.

The logic in Adelaide was probably that Will would help provide long term stability to the bulletin, given he hosts a fairly popular breakfast program on the local commercial talk station, and his father presented the news for a long time. Meanwhile Mike Smithson, while a very great presenter, has also been at SAS for 40 years, and is probably around the same age Jane Doyle was when she retired. They put Will on weekends for a few weeks to get viewers use to the new duo.

To be honest, while Will seems to be doing a decent job, they could’ve put Mike in the chair till he retired, and kept Will on weekends, however, Will probably didn’t want to work 7 days a week for an extended time, and Seven wouldn’t want to risk losing a possible long term face.

Something similar happened in 2012, going from five years of winning in the ratings (2007-11) to not winning a single week in four of the following five (winning only five weeks between 2012-17 inclusive, all in 2016). This was despite expanded AFL coverage during the latter period, which was followed by Seven no longer televising Saturday afternoon matches in Victoria as of 2017.

Mitchell is 64 now, and has given Seven Melbourne so much service in nearly a quarter-of-a-century presenting the weeknight news but I also agree that his time will be up soon.

There is a slightly higher TV market in Melbourne (5.51m to 5.38m) but it isn’t enough to account for the difference.
