One of the earlier articles at the time (may have been the Courier Mail one) had that she’d declined an offer to stay on for a few weeks to see out her contract.
Tim Lester is back in Los Angeles resuming his role as US correspondent.
Paul Burt finished up on the Gold Coast news last night. Big crowd turned up with ‘best weatherman’ signs, which you would probably only see for radio or breakfast TV personalities. While Rob Brough is known for his wink, ‘Burty’ is known for his in-weather shout outs, waves and a final salute in time with the final chimes of the news theme. I’d assume his final weather cross is for Brisbane tonight.
wtf. His show is still going to be continuing? Wouldn’t it be cheaper to axe his show and keep him on weather?
Very different proposition, one is a programming decision rather than an additional (and frankly luxury) news expense at a time when news budgets are in the spotlight.
His show is externally produced, likely pays for itself with sponsorship etc. and also fills a timeslot that can also air in repeat mode plus would fill local content quotas I believe.
Sunday Herald Sun’s Fiona Byrne reports that former ABC presenter Karina Carvalho has moved from Sydney to Melbourne, and will start on Seven News on Monday (July 29) in a presenting and reporting role. The roles of current presenters Peter Mitchell, Rebecca Maddern and Mike Amor remain unchanged.
Carvalho previously worked in Melbourne when she was on ABC News Breakfast.
Well that’s very interesting.
Great get for Seven.
Excuse me? How can they afford to hire people? How offensive to Sharyn and Paul. Especially in Melbourne where they do not need any more presenters.
As shit as it is for them, I’d say this is the Alicia/Tom effect.
They really are a top duo. (And yes I was anti Tom before they started but I’m proven wrong).
If none of the other presenters roles are affected then which bulletin is Karina going to read?
Was thinking about her the other day. Great get for Melbourne!
Just guessing but presumably different markets have different budgets… so Sharyn and Paul being let go doesn’t necessarily preclude Melbourne from hiring Karina.
It says she’ll be presenting and reporting so I imagine she’ll just fill in for the other presenters.
It doesn’t really matter how it works behind the scenes it is a really bad look.
To hire people when they’ve just fired 200 and a few on air presenters, whether it is in another state or not, is just wrong.
Take your point, and it’s probably not a great look amid wider cuts at the network currently, but it’s a bit a simplistic way to look at it.
Each newsroom would have different budgets so this decision in Melb would likely not have had any impact on what happened in other states. Despite 7 Melb losing out to 9 Melb of late, their nightly news probably still commands a decent dollar with advertising revenue compared to smaller markets.
This was probably in the works for some time now and clearly they think it fills some reporting or presenting need they have, and hate to point out the obvious but I’d be surprised if they didn’t think adding someone like her as a POC offered some better representation on our screens as well.
She’s a great presenter and think a good addition to their newsroom.
According to this will be reading at 4pm and weekends while Rebecca Maddern is on leave.
