Rosanna Mangiarelli presenting Adelaide’s Afternoon News today.
Thursday 29th October -
Mike Amor is presenting in Melbourne tonight.
Strange tonight in Perth no sports previews
Basil wasn’t at desk when crossing to Sam Jolly
Neither Rick or Sue acknowledged Basil when finished sport tonight
There was a brief Sports preview from what I saw, but it was odd that there wasn’t the usual desk banter towards the end of the bulletin.
No regular “Thanks, Bas” either from Sue when he passed it back to her and Rick.
A mayor making headlines for transphobic comments in the first block of the bulletin, and then throwing to the sports presenter who is also said transphobic mayor is a little awkward. I’m surprised he appeared at all tonight.
I to thought we woukdnt see basil present sport tonight
He hasn’t even taken office yet and we are already seeing the conflict of interest on show. You can’t have one foot in each camp.
Regardless of what he said, it just highlights why he should removed all his media commitments as soon as he was confirmed as Mayor. Situations like these are not a good look for himself or the network(s) which he fronts.
I give it a couple of months before 7 intervenes and makes the decision to remove him from nightly on-air appearances. Its just not viable.
He was sworn in last week.
I know Baz is a bit of a workaholic (considering he did Weekend Sunrise, Perth sports and AFL matches all at once for a period of time) but it really isn’t a good look for someone who’s the Lord Mayor of Perth to be presenting sports for a media company. People will just think that he used this platform to promote himself and win the position and it will leave a bad taste for him and Seven.
He needs to pick between one or the other.
…or better yet, step down from both high profile public positions.
Not very likely I know, but at the same time making comments likely to be deemed as transphobic (or in any way offensive to other similarly vulnerable minority groups) isn’t something any high profile politician and/or media personality should want to associate themselves with these days.
Nathan Templeton from Sunrise just spoke to presenter Andrew McCormack from the newsroom on Melbourne’s Afternoon News just now.
Interesting to see Nathan being used when these days he’s pretty much only seen on Sunrise.
I suspect that Mark Stevens and Tom Browne may be taking some time off after being in the AFL Hub in Queensland, hence Nathan got the call up since they’re understaffed.
Anyways, great to see Nathan, he’s a good sports reporter/presenter.
Friday 30th October -
Rod Young is presenting solo on the Gold Coast tonight with Amanda off.
Normally, Rod doesn’t work Friday’s.
Would it have been Rick and Sue’s or the news directors choice to not have much contact with Baz during the bulletin?
I would’ve thought that given how long Rick and Sue have worked alongside Baz, they would’ve put his comments to one side during the bulletin and done the sports preview, banter after sport as usual, and let him sit in on the closer, so that viewers don’t suspect there’s any tension.
Any bulletin director or more likely, head of news, worth their salt would have realised a bit of ‘sports banter’ and laughing etc would have been a bad look that night.
I get that - but wouldn’t your average older viewer who wasn’t aware of the comments Basil made have then wondered why he was less prominent on last night’s bulletin?
If they were going to hide him away from parts of the bulletin they should’ve just given him the night off, it made for awkward viewing.
Well, said older viewer would have seen it reported on in the first block and probably have some clue then, if they hadn’t prior.
Oh, I didn’t realise they had reported on the story.
I just skipped to the sport segment on 7plus to see what the vibe was like.
Why wouldn’t they?
Because he works for Seven and it’s not a good look?
And yes, I’m aware that in the past when other media personalities have stepped out of line their networks have reported on it.
But I also get that they have the responsibility to report on the news of the day.
