This is a Presenters and Reporters thread - whether you like it or not, people are going to discuss the specifics of said individuals - this does include whether they’ve been off work or not. While I do agree that speculating over the reason of said leave / days off is over the top, there was nothing at all in the posts quoted that was indicitative of this.
If you have a problem with this type of discussion, I suggest you (much like I do as it is of so interest to me whatsoever) avoid presenter and reporter threads.
The user is sharing publicly accessible information from social media that is relevant to the topic.
I don’t understand at all what compels users to obsess to this degree, but nonetheless the discussion is on topic, and “odd” as it may be, is not in breach of our community standards.
Moderators / Admins do remove posts from presenters and reporters threads routinely that unnecessarily or inappropriately speculate on such matters.
Having watched tonight’s Sport segment during the 6pm bulletin, Matt Shirvington’s presentation was fine but nothing really exciting. Better than Mel McLaughlin on Sunday-Thursday, although that isn’t particularly hard.
My personal preference probably would’ve been for Matt Carmichael to become Seven’s Friday/Saturday night Sports presenter again after years of being behind Jim Wilson & Ryan Phelan. Also because of the Sports presenters still at Seven Sydney, Matt handles presenter banter the best.
Just as I assume nobody in the media particularly cares about my personal life, I’m not particularly interested in what various presenters/reporters get up to in their personal lives - that’s their business and their business only.
However, for as long as any discussion about it is relevant to the topic at hand and the discussion/use of such content is in no way a breach of the Media Spy rules, there shouldn’t be a problem with any content from publicly accessible social media accounts being posted here. Those who wish not to have content from their social media pages discussed here or elsewhere online are always entitled to have a private online presence.
That’s completely wrong if he does that, he shouldn’t even be doing it during an election. It’s a huge conflict and both companies should immediately cease his contracts
I think Basil should take extended leave from Seven and Nine Radio while campaigning for mayor. If he fails to get elected, then he can resume work with both outlets.
Its a massive disadvantage to other candidates (including Mark Gibson former TT reporter) since Basil will undoubtedly use the 7WM and Nine resources to boost his campaign.
From a community standpoint, it would be unfair to residents in the City of Perth who need someone fully available and committed to the job in Perths most prominent city council rather than attempting to balance the many roles he has.
He needs to leave or have his contract terminated if he wins, its would not be appropriate or fair.
In other words, becoming the Richie Williamson* of Perth?
*For those not in the loop, he’s the 2GF breakfast host and Super Radio Network voiceover guy who for eight years (2008-16), was mayor of Clarence Valley Council.
In the West Australian (which unsurprisingly had the sit down interview), Basil said he intended on giving up 6PR to do mayoral duties through the day but would continue with 7 at 6pm. He also joked Rick and Sue wouldn’t be running for him either.
Should be said that both 7 and 6PR were both well aware of his intentions to run, before it was announced today.
I doubt he would be able to sustain doing the news with his mayoral commitments, in the unlikely event he was to win the election. It’s just not practical to do both, no matter how much he intends to at this time.
