Basil and Mark Stevens (the Chief AFL Reporter in Melbourne) were being interviewed by Michael about what’s happening with the AFL going forward and about the hubs etc.
Not entirely sure…perhaps he gets to make some of the decisions in the sports department…who knows?
Friday 3 July-
Matt Carmichael is presenting sport on Morning News.
Jacqueline Felgate is back presenting Afternoon News in Melbourne today, after having a short (Sunday to Thursday) holiday.
Andrew McCormack is presenting sport on Afternoon News in Melbourne.
Presumably she’ll be doing the sport tonight as well?
Also presenting on Sydney afternoon and 6pm news
Yes Jacqui will be presenting sport in Melbourne tonight (from the MCG) and tomorrow night.
Former Fox Sports presenter Matt Shirvington is joining Seven News Sydney as sports reporter, replacing Jim Wilson who starts his new role as 2GB drive host on Monday.

Geez if Matt Shirvington is going to be the new Friday/Saturday night sports presenter, that’s a real kick in the teeth to Michelle Bishop and especially Matt Carmichael who was Sydney’s 2nd in-line Sports presenter for a couple of years (2011-13, between the stints of Johanna Griggs and Ryan Phelan) and probably deserves to have it back.
Olympian Matt Shirvington joins Seven
Sprinting great and respected broadcaster further strengthens 7NEWS team and Seven’s Olympic coverage
Channel Seven today welcomes Olympian and seasoned broadcaster Matt Shirvington to the network.
In his dynamic role, Shirvington joins Australia’s number one news team and will also be part of Seven’s commentary team for the rescheduled Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Shirvington will next week begin his new role with 7NEWS Sydney’s top-rating team – including Mark Ferguson, Mel McLaughlin, David Brown, Michael Usher and Sally Bowrey – as the new weekend sports anchor. He’ll present sport alongside newsreader Michael Usher on Fridays and Saturdays.
In a sporting career spanning two decades, Shirvington brings with him more than 10 years’ experience presenting and reporting from some of the world’s biggest sporting events including multiple Olympic and Commonwealth Games.
Commenting, Matt Shirvington said: “I couldn’t be more excited to start this new chapter at Channel Seven. To be working in a newsroom alongside the best in the business is a privilege. It’s a return of sorts, having begun my television career with Seven. And it would be no surprise that as an Olympian, being able to work on another Games coverage is exactly where I want to be. I have gained a wealth of experience from my time at Foxtel and Fox Sports, for which I am grateful, which will only strengthen my contribution to the 7NEWS team.”
On the appointment, Network Director of News and Public Affairs Craig McPherson said: “Matt brings a wealth of experience and energy to our superb team. The drive and commitment required to be an elite athlete has benchmarked Matt’s broadcasting career. Instilled qualities to be the best at what he does with a Sydney and sporting pedigree across athletics, Rugby League, Australian Rules and Rugby. This is an exciting new beginning for our 7NEWS sport department, 7Sport and Matt.”
Sydney News Director, Jason Morrison , added: “Matt has proven himself to be a champion in everything he’s tackled, and he’s excelled in his media career. We can’t wait to have him working with Mel McLaughlin and our sports team.”
Born and raised in Sydney’s north-east, Shirvington is one of the greats of Australian track and field and represented his country at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games, the 1998 and 2006 Commonwealth Games and seven World Championships.
He began his media career with the Seven Network in 2005 as a host and reporter on Beyond Tomorrow before joining Sky News in 2009. Since 2013, Shirvington has been a mainstay of Fox Sports NRL coverage, most recently as host of NRL Tonight.
During this time, he has also held ongoing roles as speed and agility coach with the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs, St. George Illawarra Dragons, Sydney Swans, and NSW Waratahs. Shirvington also sits on the board of the NSW Institute of Sport.
He and wife, Jessica, have three young children, Sienna, Winter and Lincoln.
A bit bizarre to add a new anchor as they’re trying to cut costs.
A good pick. Will work well with Olympics etc.
Wonder if Matt will also take Jim’s old roles in presenting sport on the morning and Sydney afternoon news as well.
With Nine News Sydney having won the ratings for most of this year (Seven’s only significant victories so far during the 2020 ratings year were those two weeks of the 6pm half in April), citation needed.
I agree, although this is the same network which spent money on bringing Sonia Kruger back from Nine!
I’m sure there is still a cost saving. Matt would come cheaper than Jim, given how long Jim had been at the network.
This decision is quite surprising but one would have to wonder though if they (Michelle / Matt) wanted it. The more I think about it, maybe Michelle specifically is happy with her current role.
The press release only makes mention of the weekend sports presenter role,so we will have to wait and see.
Isn’t she promoted as the rugby league expert?
Michelle is the “Chief League Reporter”
