Two words to back you up. Mark Ferguson.
Tim Watson is a great footy commentator but he is a terrible sports presenter in my opinion.
Are there any better sports presenters in Melbourne though instead of Tim Watson, who could permanently do sport on the 6pm bulletin if he was to suddenly resign?
One name that comes up in my head is Hamish McLachlan, but the question remains - would he cut it as a sports presenter on a news bulletin?
Otherwise, they could make a play for Brad McEwan, who disappeared from television after leaving Network Ten in April 2018.
No thanks. His presentation is agonising to watch.
Seven shouldâve done everything to keep Sandy Roberts before he jumped to Fox. Rebecca Maddern couldâve also been used for sports but they only have themselves to blame.
They could also elevate Nathan Templeton to the role, though I think heâs still happy working on Sunrise as he has done since 2016.
Another one to go begging was Michael Felgate (now at Ten).
Luke Darcy could also be an option.
Personally l wouldâve preferred Michael Felgate as weeknight sports presenter but unfortunately he was overlooked during his time at Seven.
I donât understand the fascination with giving retired sports players a plum presenting role on the news. It seems like a waste of money but very popular here in Queensland. Surely, growing a (junior) sports journalist would make much more sense- they are cheaper, better presenters and can flex between presenting and reporting. So many people are overlooked because they arenât famous.
No doubt itâs another one of those weird Queensland things which seems completely odd to those of us in the Southern states.
From a Sydney/NSW perspective, there has been the odd retired sports star presenting sports news (Neil Brooks on Seven in the Late 1990s, Matt Burke on 10 News First now) but the vast majority have been sports journalists/presenters rather than anyone whoâs actually known for professionally playing sport.
Another would be the beach/fishing reports every Friday/Saturday night, that we donât get in Sydney or Melbourne.
Exactly. Letâs look at Pat Welsh. Junior reporter who loved sport in the mid 70âs . 45 years straight at BTQ. Alan Thomas, John McCoy, Terry Kennedy, Peter Meares,Chris Bombolas to name a few from the 80s & 90âs who loved sport and didnât play but had credibility.
Iâm not sure she is better but would Jackie Felgate be next in line for sport?
Even though I like Michelle, this isnât the first time she has been seen (advertently or inadvertently) defying physically distancing recommendations. A few months ago, she was chasing an exclusive and the Sunrise team commented that she wasnât practicing the distancing. If 7 News had corrected her initially, she may have been more conscious here. Good news that it was a negative result, though.
Michelle Bishop probably should be the main Sports presenter for Seven News Sydney instead of Mel McLaughlin, but those incidents youâve mentioned werenât her finest hours.
Thursday 11th June -
Mike Amor presented Melbourneâs Afternoon News today. Jacqui Felgate normally presents on a Thursday but she is at the MCG for the AFLâs season relaunch.
Unless they moved Jacqui back to Monday and Friday.
I do recall Michelle did a lot of filling in presenting sport on Morning News in 2018 and thought she was a very good presenter, Ryan Phelan and Matt Carmichael are used on the Sydney bulletin but unfortunately Michelle doesnât get that opportunity.
Yes heâs a pretty big fan of the Pies. I seem to remember in 2018 that he was going to wear the black and white tie for the GF bulletin but the Eagles won at the end and he wore a pink one instead
