Seven News Presenters and Reporters (2015-Sept 2020)

I know. My point was more Paula is far superior.

My point being she is not in the same league As Susanahh Carr Anglea Tsun and Sam Jolly imo

I mean I know there are opinions but I don’t think those three are all in the same league…

I’d go as far as to say - Sue, Paula, Angela… the rest.

Random fact: It is 1,000 weeks today since Peter Mitchell officially took the reins of Seven News Melbourne (he started on November 20, 2000).

From what I can gather, he has won only (roughly) 178 ratings weeks since then.

Which 185 weeks? If they’re in most recent times, then that’s good, means there’s a trend.

1 in 2005
16 in 2006
20 in 2007
25 in 2008
34 in 2009
26 in 2010
26 in 2011
5 in 2016
3 in 2018
22 (?) in 2019

Sorry got my maths wrong. 178 weeks not 185 as I first thought.

The years not mentioned above, he lost all 40 weeks.

What happened in 2012 for him to suddenly loose every single week?

I think it’s related to the ratings decline of Deal or No Deal (which aired at before the news) and the rise of Hot Seat.

As someone who does not live in Melbourne, I would have no idea, but my guess would be:

  • Perhaps it was Nine News Melbourne refreshing its graphics, and/or their brand performing well under Hugh Nailon (who’d taken over from Michael Venus as News Director at GTV in November 2010) that made Melbournians switch back to Nine News.
  • Management issues at HSV-7. That year (2012), Steve Carey left as News Director and Seven News Melbourne struggled under the leadership of Simon Pristel in the ensuing six or so years. The gap between Nine and Seven was often over 100K in Nine’s favour during this time.
  • Also in 2012, notable personalities such as Norm Beaman (retired), Leith Mulligan (sacked) and David Brown (promoted to network meteorologist, but demoted as weeknight weather presenter) left Seven News Melbourne.
  • Must also be noted that in 2018, Peter Mitchell avoided a contempt charge after inserting some inappropriate words into a report on what was a very serious story. I cited this as being a reason why Seven News continued to lag behind Nine News in Melbourne (story here: https://tvtonight.com.au/2018/03/peter-mitchell-apologises-to-court-after-off-script-comments.html)
