Seven News Content and Appearance

Interested who else’s reporting is like this?

Yep, Katrina has been pretty good.

She was the natural choice after Sharyn. Sarah came left of field, but made sense, until now.

Kudos to them for being so flexible for new mothers. But from the audience’s perspective, they will barely remember her.

Lots do cringey puns and metaphors these days. But it is less common on serious stories.

Did she?

I think once she started, she made sense. She seemed to pick up reading quite naturally. It was a return home for her, she has incredible experience for someone in her 30s. She’s the next generation - much like Joel Dry.

SEVEN’S POWER MOVE

Departed Nine Network journalist Chris O’Keefe has received an approach from the Seven Network to return to television.

Former Seven Perth news director Ray Kuka was only days into his new job as replacement for recently departed national news boss Anthony De Ceglie when Kuka started canvasing for an experienced hand to take the reins of his Sydney newsroom.

The approach follows this column’s revelation Seven’s Sydney news director Sean Power, promoted under De Ceglie to move across from executive producer of Sunrise to run Seven’s Sydney newsroom, is headed home to Melbourne.

7NEWS announces new leadership appointments

The Seven Network today announced Sean Power is being promoted to Director of News Integration and Strategy.

Mr Power has been an integral part of Seven’s news and public affairs division for seven years. He is currently Director of 7NEWS Sydney and prior to that held the role of Executive Producer of Sunrise, delivering consistent ratings success and growing audience trust.

In his new role, commencing Monday, Mr Power will lead the integration of nightly news content across all of Seven’s platforms, ensuring cohesive coverage plans in news programs right across the day, and online via 7NEWS.com.au, 7plus, The Nightly and social platforms.

In addition, he will oversee the network’s major news events in partnership with National News Desk Director and Foreign Editor Hugh Whitfeld. He will also act as the key liaison between Programming, Communications and Marketing to amplify news brands across the network.

Seven’s Director of News and Current Affairs, Ray Kuka, said: “This critical role will mean 7NEWS has a clear plan to make our first-class journalism sing not just on broadcast but also online.

“So much of our incredible news gathering ends up on the cutting room floor. Sean will enhance our delivery of news and make sure our audiences everywhere know about our exclusive and investigative content. He will also be charged with working with Sales and Partnerships to fund new programs as 7NEWS invests in the solid future of television.”

The new role will see Mr Power relocate to his hometown of Melbourne, to begin work on a new national program to be broadcast from Seven Melbourne’s brand new, state-of-the-art studios.

Mr Power said: “It’s a privilege to work alongside Australia’s sharpest journalists. We’re building on the best of 7NEWS – sharpening our storytelling, growing our audience, and driving the next chapter with purpose and pace.”

Current 7NEWS Sydney Executive Producer Geoff Dunn will step into the News Director role in an acting capacity while a re-structure is finalised.

Mr Dunn has worked in the Sydney newsroom for more than two decades and brings a deep understanding of both the city and the team. He knows the heartbeat of both the newsroom and Sydney, and with the respect of his colleagues and a clear understanding of the team’s strengths and challenges, is uniquely placed to lead this interim phase.

The news team also confirmed the departure of Gemma Acton, currently Director of News Operations, who is relocating with her family overseas to Dubai for a new career opportunity.

Mr Kuka said: “We want to thank Gemma for her outstanding contribution over the past seven years – both in front of and behind the camera. Her dedication, professionalism and mentorship have had a lasting impact on so many, and she leaves with our warmest thanks and very best wishes for this exciting new chapter for her and her family.

“Gemma’s held onto this news for a while now, so I appreciate her taking the time to hand over parts of her role while preparing for her overseas move in two weeks.”

Just like the one that was supposed to be coming from Brisbane?

Yup I did wonder if they’d shifted this planned program from being developed in Brisbane to Melbourne under Power, or scrapped it altogether and this is something entirely different under Kuka.

Part of me thinks it (the Brisbane panel based show or whatever it was) was just drip feed to media at that time given Katrina missed out on the Brisbane main news reading gig and to keep her happy along with that weird title “Queensland Chief Reporter”.

My guess is a national news program at 3.00pm from Melbourne.

Interesting times ahead.

No word on new Director 7 News Perth?

What does FIRST mean in this watermark? First on the scene (we used to see that a lot when there were 2 Gold Coast bulletins) or first to get the vision to air? Or something else?

Either way it seems to be of minor importance to the viewer especially when promoted with such a big watermark and do I really care hours after the event? A smaller corner message would be enough.

Promoting the vision as first must imply that the opposition were second, so they have footage as well. So no need to protect this with a huge watermark.

Maybe they heard 10 were planning to drop the first branding from their news name? :joy:

But good observation Cynic, useless and intrusive is what it is.

Funnily enough, 9’s Morning News branded that footage as a 9 Exclusive IIRC in the opener of the bulletin!

To be fair Nine has this on virtually the same vision

“First”, “First On Scene”, “Exclusive” and other similar names have been used to death and now lost all meaning.

They’re little signposts to make the story or vision look more impressive than it actually is. I sometimes wonder if they have a quota to fill.

Is it possible that they could combine the Director of News and Current Affairs with the Perth News Director role? I remember hearing that the role didn’t exist under Peter Meakin until the early 2010s

This :backhand_index_pointing_up:

He was poached but isn’t confirmed to join?? Wouldn’t be a good addition anyway.

Has to be. Sean Power moving roles again. It will be interesting because this changes the lineup options for the show.

I say that and tonight they have moved The Star out of sight completely after about 9-12 months.

Interesting that the promos also say ‘7 News Brisbane” now and not Queensland.
