Does anyone actually turn on the television on these Tuesday afternoons waiting for these reports? Seems like a waste of time, resources and money. Why not just repprt them at the next news break?
It’s like the ridiculous “live” news reports in the evening news. So tonight Seven News had a story about the NRMA releasing a report on a survey they did with businesses which found that they thought roads in western Sydney were more congested than the Sydney CBD. I mean the change from a previous survey was negiligible but put that aside.
What possible benefit do we get from having the reporter deliver this story “live” from beside Parramatta Road at night that you couldn’t have recorded earlier in the day? 
Especially since the traffic flow seemed to be pretty good and there was no congestion?

Just breaks it up a bit rather than back to back pre-recorded packages.

I can understand having a live cross for breaking or developing stories. Especially if the newreader asks the reporter a question directly. This was neither and was completely unnecessary. Just a waste of money and resources to be doing that for a three minute report that adds nothing.

Well if you’ve got a crew and reporter covering one story that day and sticking around for a live cross later on, that’s not managing your resources well.

If you have a crew on a 10 til 6.30 shift, they can do a package with one reporter and a cross with another, so 2 for 1 almost.
Yeah, I would assume the newsroom is capable of managing its roster/resourcing

A 6:30 ending to the shift wouldn’t work. You need to factor in travel time and allow time for the crew at the end of the shift back at the station. Not as simple as OnAir makes out.

I was using that as an example, we all know these crews work long days, if they’re going to have the crew on past 6 may as well use them during the bulletin for live segments. As I said, it’s just part of shaking up the flow etc, plus easier to adapt to any late changes for some stories.

We view things as very binary here on this fine discussion forum. My point, which I stand by, is that Seven probably has better idea of adequately resourcing its news programming than we do.
As @SA_TV points out, you don’t get too far in the industry on being inflexible on hours and the like.

I think you will also fine there are a lot of look live ones as well… even if they are labelled live 
Well if it’s prerecorded but they use a “live” bug then it’s fake news.

If it says LIVE then it’s LIVE, Look-lives are what they do on the 4pm news.

I think there is also a point that if there isn’t much developing on the story, as was the example given above, then the reporter could be covering a different story live during 6pm or back in the newsroom doing another package for the bulletin. Live crosses seem to largely be about perception these days than anything else.
They always largely have been about perception
It’s the look that they’re the ones at the location, when in fact 99/100 live crosses could just be read out by the presenter.

It’s all about getting the most eyeballs watching the screen
If they think (and research shows they do) that more people are going to watch because of a live cross to a reporter on the street, then that’s what they’re gunna do.
I’ve seen live crosses to the street outside the studio on several occasions on both 7 & 9, not that they admitted to it when crossing to the reporter.
