That actually doesn’t look that bad!

Some old footage has been uploaded to the Sunrise YouTube channel of a Real Life report from 1994. A deep cut from the archives!

If you don’t like Nine News’ tabloid approach, this is the 6pm alternative from Seven in Brisbane tonight.

“Selfish residents throwing out their rubbish wherever they like.
Cracking down on the south-east’s illegal dumping shame and how you can dob them in.
Plus just look at the eyesaws littering our suburbs.”

Nobody knows “news” like Seven.

Gee, is it any wonder that the Sydney-based 10 News First still rates moderately well when this is the sort of thing Seven & Nine offer their viewers in South East Queensland?!

a story like this would have dominated today tonight back in the day…

But not! an! exclamation! Mark! in! sight!

And as per most of these promoted stories, it was the last story of the night before the weather. So anyone who wanted to see the story saw it promoted as a headline story, “coming up” twice and promoted again during an ad break before it was finally shown at 6:55.

7 may have to ramp up the trash in Brisbane. They’re being flogged every night by 9 now. It’s now permanently affecting The Chase by the looks of it too.

I’ve said this before. While it sucks that sensationalist bullshit is what rates in Brisbane, 9 seems to be better at it than 7. 7 is in some weird middle ground between a more serious broadcast like the ABC (or even 10) and QTQ’s offering and needs to differentiate itself beyond some promos.

At the moment it just seems like they’re trying to copy 9, but not doing it as well. Either commit all the way to being sensationalist or don’t, but don’t sit on the fence.

I don’t think they’re trying to copy 9’s trash at all.

Perhaps not copy but adopt some of 9’s techniques. 7 is still quite sensationalist in Brisbane compared to what you might expect on 9 Melbourne or Sydney.

Actually looks good.

Doesn’t look bad. Would look better if the text on the middle screen continues on the two side screens instead of the vertical stacked one. But it’s quite a nice red and font.

Let me guess, breaking news?

It’s overkill. You don’t need the words literally everywhere, we get it.

Yeah the desk and main backdrop are enough IMO, the two side screens could be utilized as normal.

Agreed. It would be best to use the state skyline, the national globe if it was a Network-wide report, or an accompanying image relevant to the Breaking News on the main screen, having the graphic on the desk is effective enough. Definitely overkill.

Seven were relatively successful back in the 2000s and early 2010s with a more quality, upmarket broadcast. Especially in the days of Rod and Kay, the 6pm news was pretty close to ABC-tier quality. I think a lot of that loyalty peeled off when they made the switch to Sharon.

Now they’re caught in this weird hangover phase where they still have the ‘quality’ mindset, but are losing horribly to Nine. Combine that with shit presentation and a dungeon for a set…
