Seven News Content and Appearance (2020-Feb 2025)

That’s how he is though. He can’t adlib and is a autocue man.
Him and Jane are two of the most warlord media personalities I’ve ever met

Just watched it too, very awkward indeed.

Agree. He’s not the best but on this afternoon’s news he was worse than normal. It was like watching a work experience kid on air.

To save others trawling through 7+ to find it:

Was Mitch set up by staffers to fail sans autocue? Felt like watching an episode of Frontline when Mike didn’t have his reaction scripted.

I had it all ready to say… can’t be that bad. Just a bit of ad lib.

Wrong. That was… I don’t have words!

Jesus Christ, I know Mitch isn’t the best in ad-libbing situations, but that makes the banter between Mel and Fergo actually sound decent.

Actually this was the scene of Mike adlibbing I was trying to think of!

Maybe by Mike lol. It really threw him off asking about his holiday. Surely, they know ad-lib isn’t his strong suit. So why put him in situations like that?

Contract negotiation time?

WTF… is this shit…

It’s a positive and local news story to end the bulletin. They do this in multiple other states.

Is this the Sydney version of Sunnyside? The local news segment that they have in QLD?

Yes

Melbourne have the same segment, and Adelaide have it as well but it’s called “Ray of Sunshine”

Holy jesus… That is worse than I thought. Could barely string together a sentence.

This is totally going to become a Daily Mail article.

I actually agree with this.

The producer or director putting this together should have worked closer with Mitch. They know add lipping isn’t he’s strong point, so why do it?

But in saying that, Peter can do a better job than what we saw go to air. It did come across that he was startled (or unprepared) on what to say.

I think that is the confusing part.

He was asked such a natural, every day question. How were your holidays?

How hard is it to answer that? It’s not like he was asked a question he didn’t know the answer to. Surely he would know how his own holidays were?

You wouldn’t need to prepare for such a question.

I obviously don’t watch Mitch being in Qld, but I’m aware of the general consensus from the forum of his lack or ad-libbing abilities.

What I would say on this though is that you never know what someone may be going through in those moments as he seems to be a competent enough newsreader when he’s just reading.

Take for example Nate Byrne on News Breakfast, which I’m not saying is the same, just that there may be things going on which we’re not aware of.

Sure it made for some uncomfortable viewing, but also don’t think it’s constructive to hammer the point further here. Not everything is so black and white.

Maybe it’s time to slot Mike in the chair and Pete to weekends.
