They were still around in 2006. The only major difference was the change in opener. Still better than what Nine were offering at the time. The red blue and white graphics that Seven had back then oozed the Seven News brand and gave it a distinctive feel. Nine werenât sure what they were doing in 2006. There supers of white and orange could be mistaken for a cigarette across the TV screen
Exactly. Not that this really needs to be said but in no particular order, the reasons that Seven News Sydney has been frequently criticised by Media Spy over the last few years include (but are not necessarily limited to).
*General content which is lacklustre at best.
*Very long major promos which often leave the average viewer at home asking âWhat was that about?â while shorter promos on Nine manage to pack more in and get to the point.
*Terrible On-Air Presentation and consistently tweaking it, rather than doing a proper relaunch.
*Wasting money on gimmicks like the âSeven News Live Villageâ which add little if any value to the bulletin.
*Western Sydney-centric approach to news with those joint campaigns with The Daily Telegraph.
*Removing a popular presenter from weeknights in 2014 for one who had previously failed in the ratings at another network (yes I know that Seven News Sydney Ian Ross at itâs ratings peak was competition against Fergo when he was at Nine, but stillâŚ)
*Sevenâs team of presenters/reporters donât really have the same level of viewer popularity, trustworthiness or support compared to Nineâs team.
Thereâs probably more, but I think Iâve pretty much covered most of it. Yes, thereâs some good things about Seven News Sydney but unfortunately, I have to say that the negatives still far outweigh the positives even after a change in lead-in program.

Whatâs that meant to mean? Last time I checked, Nine News Melbourne was consistently beating Seven News Melbourne?
It means I was responding to the question you posed. You asked why the majority of criticism was directed at Seven Sydney. Since Seven Melbourne won last night, the criticism was directed at Sydney which still lost despite the tennis lead-in and lead-out.
Yeah, no. The content rivals a tabloid entertainment show. Ferguson is as loveable as a wet sock and in Brisbane the best newsreaders work two days a week.
As Iâve said before, Iâm sure Mark Ferguson is a nice person. He would probably a good newsreader for a morning or afternoon news bulletin. Even a rolling news channel maybe. But presenting Sevenâs 6pm bulletin in Australiaâs largest city against Peter Overton (realisticallyâŚin 20 years time, Peter Overton will probably be as fondly remembered by this city as Henderson/Climpson/Ross are) as competition on Nine? Thereâs just so many things wrong with that.
Personally, I think that Melissa Doyle is the only newsreader (not the best, the only) who can seriously compete with Peter Overton now that Seven let Chris Bath go. Of course there also need to be a major relaunch of everything else to do with Seven News Sydney, but I think that really goes without sayingâŚ
Thereâs nothing wrong with anybody and any criticism about Mark isnât meant to be personal. Iâm sure in real-life heâs a nice and decent person.
The criticism about him has been about his presenting style and how his tenure as anchor has seen Seven fall to #2 in the 6pm ratings battle. It doesnât help that he replaced a presenter who had a long association with Seven in Chris Bath and due to them sticking with him saw her leave the network.
Yes, heâs not the sole reason behind the position which Seven News has found themselves in on the east coast. Yes, if Seven had attempted to revamp their news service to address the areas which needed fixing then Mark being in the anchor chair might not be so much of an issue. However itâs hard not to argue that part of the reason why Seven News isnât winning in the ratings on a consistent basis is to do with Mark Fergusson being their anchor
Itâs not mean. Merely pointing out why Iâm not âsecretly in love with 7â. I find his presentation style very beige but the thing that makes me reach for the remote is his nightly slouch to the left. Sit up properly!
I donât secretly love Seven. I watch some of Nine and ABC.
I disagreed with Sevenâs refusal to fix what was wrong with the news bulletin (namely the content and style of content) but instead outed the trusted, experienced presenter who had been a face of Seven News for around a decade.
Concerning the comments about Fergo, the complaints have been the same for quite a while; to the point that Seven hired an acting coach for Fergo (albeit denied by Seven) instead of just conceding that they made a mistake.
I agree that Mel should be put in the weekday position considering that she has built a lot of the viewerâs trust during her time on Sunrise. Itâs much better than subtly begging the viewers to try and like Fergo which has been an element of their promos for a while.
They are in a desperate need of a relaunch graphics and content wise. The graphics because theyâve been tweaked bit by bit since 2013 and is now a bit all over the place; glass effect here, scanlines there, gloss there.
To be fair, I understand Chris Bath was number one for 3 of her 4 years in the main anchor chair giving Seven a reason to put Mark in, although I donât agree.

Not even get me started on that!

Mel is certainly not the best but the most allegeable for the 6pm role from Seven.
And that was mistake number one, making her the scape goat when the problem was the content. Mistake number two, rather than address the problem, replacing her with a presenter who has never resonated with audiences. Mistake number three, persisting with mistake number two rather than admitting they screwed up on mistake number one. All very simple really.
Seven continue to do exactly the same in Brisbane. The presenters in Sydney and Brisbane were the best assets Seven had. However, management decided to screw them over.
