Seven News Content and Appearance (2015-2020)

Seven News graphics were at their best in 2004.

The glossy red Seven opener graphic transitioning with the word S E V E N.

The Sydney skyline in weekend news updates.

Even the Ian Ross, Matthew White and Nuala Hafner update ender graphic with them on the Sydney tower panning across the skyline.

That looked amazing. None of Sevens competitors did anything remotely as sleek as that. Not even today.

They were still around in 2006. The only major difference was the change in opener. Still better than what Nine were offering at the time. The red blue and white graphics that Seven had back then oozed the Seven News brand and gave it a distinctive feel. Nine weren’t sure what they were doing in 2006. There supers of white and orange could be mistaken for a cigarette across the TV screen

At least Sydney had the flying billboard. Adelaide skipped out on that one, but Perth got it

I know this was already mentioned in today’s ratings thread, but Seven News indeed won in Melbourne last night (both half hours too).

Despite Nine News well down there & Seven News overall well down.

However, majority of criticism posts here, do seem to be directed towards Seven Sydney?

Because that’s where it has been consistently underperforming. Obviously.

Just a couple of the very sleek looks Seven offered viewers in 2004

What’s that meant to mean?

Last time I checked, Nine News Melbourne was consistently beating Seven News Melbourne?

Although yes, following on from major sports / events (i.e.) AFL, Seven News Melbourne (Jennifer Keyte) does generally win.

But with Melbourne, the numbers are always higher, so it doesn’t look as bad. I’m saying, that that’s how it shouldn’t be perceived…

Another sleek look I thought looked great and was ahead of its time

Exactly. Not that this really needs to be said but in no particular order, the reasons that Seven News Sydney has been frequently criticised by Media Spy over the last few years include (but are not necessarily limited to).

*General content which is lacklustre at best.
*Very long major promos which often leave the average viewer at home asking “What was that about?” while shorter promos on Nine manage to pack more in and get to the point.
*Terrible On-Air Presentation and consistently tweaking it, rather than doing a proper relaunch.
*Wasting money on gimmicks like the “Seven News Live Village” which add little if any value to the bulletin.
*Western Sydney-centric approach to news with those joint campaigns with The Daily Telegraph.
*Removing a popular presenter from weeknights in 2014 for one who had previously failed in the ratings at another network (yes I know that Seven News Sydney Ian Ross at it’s ratings peak was competition against Fergo when he was at Nine, but still…)
*Seven’s team of presenters/reporters don’t really have the same level of viewer popularity, trustworthiness or support compared to Nine’s team.

There’s probably more, but I think I’ve pretty much covered most of it. Yes, there’s some good things about Seven News Sydney but unfortunately, I have to say that the negatives still far outweigh the positives even after a change in lead-in program.

It means I was responding to the question you posed. You asked why the majority of criticism was directed at Seven Sydney. Since Seven Melbourne won last night, the criticism was directed at Sydney which still lost despite the tennis lead-in and lead-out.

But do you concur? That is the question.

Yeah, no. The content rivals a tabloid entertainment show. Ferguson is as loveable as a wet sock and in Brisbane the best newsreaders work two days a week.

Stop being mean to good ol Fergo!

My partner the other day commented on Fergo and goes…“wow that guy is sooo boreing”

What’s wrong with all you people? Is he that bad?

I actually found Ian Ross quite boreing.

Edit: Actually I lie. I did like Ross’ presentation style. I really liked his voice too. He had a presence. Something Fergo doesn’t have.

I’m very pro personality, intelligence and soul over looks any day so that can only go so far for Fergo I guess.

As I’ve said before, I’m sure Mark Ferguson is a nice person. He would probably a good newsreader for a morning or afternoon news bulletin. Even a rolling news channel maybe. But presenting Seven’s 6pm bulletin in Australia’s largest city against Peter Overton (realistically…in 20 years time, Peter Overton will probably be as fondly remembered by this city as Henderson/Climpson/Ross are) as competition on Nine? There’s just so many things wrong with that.

Personally, I think that Melissa Doyle is the only newsreader (not the best, the only) who can seriously compete with Peter Overton now that Seven let Chris Bath go. Of course there also need to be a major relaunch of everything else to do with Seven News Sydney, but I think that really goes without saying…

There’s nothing wrong with anybody and any criticism about Mark isn’t meant to be personal. I’m sure in real-life he’s a nice and decent person.

The criticism about him has been about his presenting style and how his tenure as anchor has seen Seven fall to #2 in the 6pm ratings battle. It doesn’t help that he replaced a presenter who had a long association with Seven in Chris Bath and due to them sticking with him saw her leave the network.

Yes, he’s not the sole reason behind the position which Seven News has found themselves in on the east coast. Yes, if Seven had attempted to revamp their news service to address the areas which needed fixing then Mark being in the anchor chair might not be so much of an issue. However it’s hard not to argue that part of the reason why Seven News isn’t winning in the ratings on a consistent basis is to do with Mark Fergusson being their anchor

It’s not mean. Merely pointing out why I’m not ‘secretly in love with 7’. I find his presentation style very beige but the thing that makes me reach for the remote is his nightly slouch to the left. Sit up properly!

I don’t secretly love Seven. I watch some of Nine and ABC.

I disagreed with Seven’s refusal to fix what was wrong with the news bulletin (namely the content and style of content) but instead outed the trusted, experienced presenter who had been a face of Seven News for around a decade.

Concerning the comments about Fergo, the complaints have been the same for quite a while; to the point that Seven hired an acting coach for Fergo (albeit denied by Seven) instead of just conceding that they made a mistake.

I agree that Mel should be put in the weekday position considering that she has built a lot of the viewer’s trust during her time on Sunrise. It’s much better than subtly begging the viewers to try and like Fergo which has been an element of their promos for a while.

They are in a desperate need of a relaunch graphics and content wise. The graphics because they’ve been tweaked bit by bit since 2013 and is now a bit all over the place; glass effect here, scanlines there, gloss there.

They also need to change their promos which reeks of them not being able to compete with Nine as well as copying Nine’s promos (a couple of years later so we won’t notice):
Nine: “There is news everywhere…” 2012. Nine: “Wherever news breaks Nine is there” 2013. -> Seven: “Everywhere news is happening” 2014.
Nine’s experience promo from 2009 -> Seven’s version in 2015.
To be fair, I understand Chris Bath was number one for 3 of her 4 years in the main anchor chair giving Seven a reason to put Mark in, although I don’t agree.

Mel is certainly not the best but the most allegeable for the 6pm role from Seven.

And that was mistake number one, making her the scape goat when the problem was the content. Mistake number two, rather than address the problem, replacing her with a presenter who has never resonated with audiences. Mistake number three, persisting with mistake number two rather than admitting they screwed up on mistake number one. All very simple really.

Seven continue to do exactly the same in Brisbane. The presenters in Sydney and Brisbane were the best assets Seven had. However, management decided to screw them over.
