Seven News Content and Appearance (2015-2020)

Could be worse. Mark Ferguson could be in shot.

Poor Fergo. He can’t catch a break with you guys!

I’m actually getting use to both the set and theme music. Yeah, it’s not that good nor is it better to the previous theme, but the current theme has grown on me. I like the set, all but for the ‘thing’ on the front of the desk and the excessive use of blue for Seven.
A lot of the comments towards him are fair and justified, IMO.

As I’ve said countless times before, I personally think that the two biggest problems by far with Seven News Sydney right now are definitely the often questionable quality of the content on a regular day to day basis as well as the main newsreader who just doesn’t fit in with the type of content/audience that Seven is trying to go for with it’s Sydney 6pm bulletin.

But of course as we all know, Seven would prefer to change almost any other element of the bulletin as a response to the ratings before getting to the content or Mark Ferguson.

I wouldn’t even care about the sub-standard presentation or the lackluster presenter so much if there was more emphasis on the quality of Seven News’ content, but there isn’t. I’m not so sure about other states, but here in Sydney I would probably say that Seven News has the worst quality content of any local news service in the market.

So the only way one could judge that is to physically watch and assess a full year’s worth of content. Not possible. That’s why networks submit their best work or specific highlights for consideration.

The focus recently has clearly been on creating effective promos rather than creating effective bulletins and an effective news service.

Effective promos are obviously important but they do nothing to create long-term habitual change which is what Seven needs to do if they want to actually win nights/weeks against Nine. You create that change by airing something that compels viewers to return again tomorrow night and then the night after and so on.

They’ve made some positive changes lately but they either kick in too late in the bulletin (ie Mel McL and Brownie) or have been done in such a half-arsed way that only makes things worse (ie the new theme and set). I realise that they need to avoid alienating viewers but you do that by taking a considered, structured approach rather than just lurching from one change to the next in a seemingly random manner.

Face it people, Sydney is slowly but surely making the switch to Seven News with Mark Ferguson.

The ratings are suggesting otherwise.

The only major reason Seven News beats Nine in total numbers is because of the west.

Yeah…no. Every night at 6pm, Sydney is actually switching on Nine News with Peter Overton!

Until Seven drop Mark Ferguson and/or the tabloid, Western Sydney-centric content I can’t see them making any particularly major inroads against Nine in the ratings.

If that really were the case than Seven would be declaring that they are number one in Sydney. Truth be told, yes Mark Ferguson has got his loyal fan base (yourself included) and I’m sure they would still watch if Mark was presenting from a cardboard box. But the support is greater for Peter Overton over at Nine.

IIRC, this is a rarity:

In the morning, Nine Morning News averaged 129,000 [beating] Seven’s Morning News had 118,000
@TV.Cynic I know you can’t get/know the figures, but isn’t Seven Morning News the preferred choice at 11.30?

It has been ahead previously but it seems like the MasterChef encores are messing with viewing patterns so it is hard to tell at the moment.

Yeah I remember about a year ago, you posted the ratings and around the time Mornings extended to 11.30, and the figures were Seven Morning News was about 130,000, Masterchef 110,000 and Nine Morning News 90,000. Ridiculous how well Masterchef encores rate, TBH.

Off topic, but wouldn’t the ratings for the MasterChef encores mainly be from people who might’ve missed seeing the show in primetime because they were watching something else (ie, House Rules or The Voice)? I’d imagine that a few people might timer record those encore airings of MasterChef (remember, it’s a time of day that many are at work/school/uni/etc) to catch up on the show at a more convenient time as well.

Generally though, I think that the main reason that Seven’s Morning News is the timeslot leader because of the lead-in from The Morning Show which was/is considerably stronger than that of Mornings/Today Extra.

How dare Channel TEN schedule encores which they know people are going to watch. Ridiculous

Major error in Victoria tonight. After the conclusion of a report we were switched from the Melbourne bulletin feed to the Sydney bulletin feed, which was part way through a live cross to Chris Maher. Haven’t seen that happen for a very long time!
